There is much to like about the #VivaldiBrowser but it not cooperating with my password manager ( #ProtonPass ) is kind of a dealbreaker. It seems to have been an issue for a while for a lot of users. I guess I will keep using it along with #BraveBrowser for a while to give it a fair shake, but they really need to fix this.

@inlovewithpda Using a mix of #palemoon, #firefoxesr, #bravebrowser, #vivaldiBrowser, and #torbrowser, depending on the context.

Screenshot of #SignalDesktop I took last year on #Librem5.Regarding browsers, the default #FirefoxESR does not need any zooming in, and neither does #GnomeWeb, #Kumo or #AngelFish. On #BraveBrowser, I zoom in 125%.
Btw, being able to use desktop apps on #LinuxMobile is generally considered one of its advantages!

Warning - Do not install NoScript from Brave Browser
Brave had announced that they will continue to provide support for a limited number of MV2 extensions. The issue is NoScript MV2 for Chromium based browsers is discontinued/outdated.
The only extension that is still currently maintained and can be installed from Brave is uBlock Origin and AdGuard.

@ati1 @linmob Depends what the user wants from a personal device, how they use it and what their priorities are. If someone's priorities are a modern camera, running proprietary Android apps and their money is held hostage by banks requiring #Duopoly apps, they should check back later, perhaps when the Librem 5 "Fir" model is released.
On the other hand, if #FreeSoftware, #privacy, #modularity, #repairability, #ecofriendliness, #decentralisation, #digitalindependence, etc. are valued above other things, the Librem 5 and the higher-spec model, the #LibertyPhone, can absolutely work in 2025 and beyond.
I am daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS and everything important to me works: VoLTE calls and SMS (although I avoid them due to #SaltTyphoon), 4G data, Wi-Fi, camera with OK quality photos (see: #ShotOnLibrem5), GPS with #PureMaps, web browsing with #FirefoxESR, web apps (including banking) using #GNOMEWeb and #BraveBrowser, email using #Geary and #DeltaChat, audio calls on #SignalMessenger, #Matrix ( #ElementMessenger), #XMPP ( #DinoIM), #JitsiMeet, etc.
There are occasional bugs and quirks, and the device itself has limitations but nothing that I can't work around.
Not sure if I missed anything. Let me know if you have a specific use case that you absolutely require and I'll see if I can test...

@Vivaldi
Stumbled upon it one day in #Ubuntu's app store's “New and Updated” section. 'Twas actually the #Flatpak version, which doesn't really have the best #images and #description, as it's #unofficial, so I wasn't drawn to it at first, but just kept in my #mind. A few days later, #BraveBrowser started having a lot of #issues (it was my bad, actually, but anyway) and I switched to #MicrosoftEdge for a while. A little time after, I found out about some ugly things M$ does through its #browser, and looked for an #alternative. #Browsers like #Brave were already too #basic for me, after using #Edge, and thus, when I saw #Vivaldi as a powerful alternative, I didn't hesitate a moment and tried it.That's the most #important part of the story, but… there's a second #volume: At first, I was like a #crazy #chicken in front of a pot full of #earthworms, so… I obviously broke the browser in just one, two days. In the meanwhile, I also managed to repair Brave, and I was thinking of leaving V, considering it too #buggy. But luckily, I decided to give it one more chance, this time being more #cautious about #messing up with #settings… and here I am!
You might call me a very #wise person, since I didn't #giveUp immediately, but the #truth is… I was simply #mesmerized by it… :tony_happy:

First I must underline that this is all speculation and I have no proof of the attack described here being implemented in practice.
I firmly believe too much trust is placed on the effectiveness of certificate transparency to protect against state actors.
Much focus has been placed on the fact that certificate transparency is supposedly geographically and jurisdictionally distributed and could not be defeated by a single state. Unfortunately, the monoculture of Chromium-based browsers means that a single point of failure now exists, easily tampered with by a single jurisdiction: the USA.
From checking I've done so far, it seems that most Chromium-based browsers use the Google-generated "PKI Metadata" package as is. This would include browsers such as:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Vivaldi Browser
- Brave BrowserAssuming the actor would have ability to sign malicious "PKI Metadata" update, this would mean that the actor would also have the ability to disable certificate transparency by targeting the periodic "PKI Metadata" update performed by the Chromium component updater.
In practice the attack would replace the "ct_config.pb" file with one that lists fake servers that are all in control of the attacker and that would provide a fake Merkle tree against which a crafted certificate would then validate. No collusion by the CT log providers are required as the actual list is replaced by malicious one. Once done, the actor who has the ability to issue otherwise trusted certificates can bypass certificate transparency and quietly get MiTM performed. In effect, CT validation would still happen, but it would be performed against infrastructure fully controlled by the attacker. Notably to implement this attack no changes to Chromium source code or binaries would be required, only the component updater signing key would need to be made available to the actor.
I am not claiming that Google would necessarily be doing something like this, or that they would be doing this willingly. The United States law, however, has binding clauses that require US companies to cooperate to provide lawful access. Notably, this law also specifically only protects US citizens, and everyone else can be targeted freely. This is why Certificate Transparency was planned to be distributed between multiple jurisdictions to begin with.
Apple and Mozilla manage their certificate transparency log lists separately. Thus, they're outside of this single point of failure, at least. This doesn't necessarily mean they would be unaffected by similar lawful access requirements, however.
Having laid out the problem, is there anything that could be done to improve the situation? What should parties using Chromium do to rectify this situation and limit the potential impact from such malicious "PKI Metadata" updates?
I suggest that browser manufacturers that take security seriously stop blindly trusting Google to deliver "PKI Metadata" updates. Rather, they should set up infrastructure of their own that delivers this (and potentially other?) component updates. The service would then add an extra layer of validation, where the Google-provided update is verified (by automation and potentially manual means) before being repackaged and signed with their own trust root.
Of course, this method isn't bulletproof either, as these individual signing parties could then be targeted by the state actor. However, it would be a far better situation than trusting a single company in a single jurisdiction for this certificate transparency list.
In the end you need to trust something at some point. I would like to place my trust on something else than good will of US government.

Imagine being a wealthy CEO who spends his time claiming women belong in the kitchen and should not have control of their own bodies. Or that same CEO claiming black lives do not matter. That same CEO claiming love is only love between a man and woman. That same CEO saying, both LGBTQ+ and trans folk suffer from mental illness. Furthermore, claiming that COVID was a hoax, vaccines kill people, and is a firm, Donald Trump supporter.
You probably think, I am talking about Elon Musk, and you likely support the idea of Tesla going bankrupt, as not to support a Nazi. But who I am actually describing is Brendan Eich, the founder and CEO of Brave Browser, but when you tell people that is the case, people will argue "that is different". 🙄

Did you ever hear about Custom Headers in #bravebrowser? Yesterday I found out that #Brave will add custom HTTP header X-Brave-Partner on websites of the Brave's partners.
Currently, it adds this header only on #Grammarly website, the reason is "Count Brave visitors as part of an ad campaign".
Also, if #Yandex is a default search index, the Brave adds special clid parameter to search requests for indicating that request originated from Brave (2423859 for Android users, 2353835 for Desktop users).Reference: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Custom-Headers
In the past, the list contains several Brave partners, such as upholdm you can check the revisions of the wiki page (e.g. in 2019-2020).
Interesting fact is that in the past, this list was updated dynamically - the Brave browser downloaded a json config once a day from https://laptop-updates.brave.com/promo/custom-headers
And this feature could not be disabled: https://github.com/brave/brave-core/commit/6983876d3c2a2218dd6813ba3141cd674128fccf
Nowadays, the list of partners is hardcoded in the source code, but still it is there.
For more info see this issue and source code: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/16455
https://github.com/brave/brave-core/blob/master/components/brave_referrals/browser/brave_referrals_service.ccDespite the custom headers and clid are same for all Brave users, it can be used to identify who uses Brave browser - in some organizations/companies it could be prohibited because of its support for Tor, and this Custom Headers and parameters can distinguish between the Brave users and others

Brave Tops Browser First-Run Network Traffic Results
https://brave.com/brave-tops-browser-first-run-network-traffic-results/
"When I set out to conduct these reviews, I wasn’t 100% positive on what I’d find. I had high hopes for Brave, and it delivered. But I wasn’t sure just how clean and controlled the experience would be in other major web browsers. Brave impressed with its 100% pass rate for calling out to official Brave properties. The degree to which other browsers fail to do the same left me quite bewildered. Even browsers who famously market themselves as private and secure by default made far more calls to third party hosts than I would have expected."
