  1. I don’t pass as a woman, and I’ve become accustomed to stares and occasional paused conversations when I walk by. I’m untroubled by most of it. I try to keep a benign smile on my face and act like I don’t give a shit.

  9. [Micro-weblog] My online psychology reflection: It hurts when genuine compliments are consistently rejected. If the person rejects both praise and insults, it suggests they reject *all* external judgment, seeking total self-sufficiency. I admire that high level of independence, even if my raw self still wishes for that tidy, dedicated house!

  10. CBS News: A 9-year-old Illinois boy set up a stand that offers free compliments. It became a local hit.. “It’s a hot summer day and 9-year-old Ethan Wargo of Sycamore, Illinois, is making a stand. It’s like a refreshment stand — just for your self-esteem. Ethan got the idea while reading his ‘Dog Man’ graphic novel. In the book, one of the characters sets up an insult stand. Ethan knew that […]

  11. Quote of the day, 25 July: St. Thérèse

Listen to this little, very funny story:

One day [10 January 1889], after I received the Habit, Sister St. Vincent de Paul saw me with Mother Prioress, and she exclaimed: “Oh! how well she looks! Is this big girl strong! Is she plump!”

I left, quite humbled by the compliment, when Sister Magdalene stopped me in front of the kitchen and said: “But what is beoming of you, poor little Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus! You are fading away before our eyes! If you continue at this pace, with an appearance that makes one tremble, you won’t observe the Rule very long!”

I couldn’t get over hearing, one after the other, two such contrary appraisals. Ever since that moment, I have never attached any importance to the opinion of creatures, and this impression has so developed in me that, at this present time, reproaches and compliments glide over me without leaving the slightest imprint.

  24. So, my son (18) and I (43), and group of my friends, were out at baseball game last night watching one of our other friends play. One of my friends brought her friend who was visiting from interstate.

Today she comes up to me and says that her interstate friend had asked if my son and I were brother and sister, and when she’d told him that we were actually mother and son he’d been shocked and was sure I wasn’t old enough to have a child, let alone one who is now an adult.

It doesn’t take much to make someone’s day, but telling them they look young enough to be their teenage sons sister is a pretty good way to achieve it.

    "very interesting, but nothing sensible"

I do publish nonsense... and if this were a comment to my nonsense, it would be a compliment.

Alas. This was posted into an actual article of mine in which I was arguing for a position. As such, it is an insult.

My 34-year-old daughter just gave me a big compliment--which is sort of unusual for her--she posted elsewhere:

"The best thing about Tim Walz is he gives off a very strong my dad vibe. Quick to laugh, smile, make a terrible pun, and kind."

    She's not wrong!

  28. Today someone called me a genius. Not casually, as a catch all compliment, but with intention.

It caught me off guard and took me a moment to process. It’s gonna stay with me because I need it to.

If you have kind words for someone, don’t keep them locked away. Speak them into existence.

  29. "See, the problem here is that you know what you're doing. Most customers don't."

    - the plumber rep, after coming back to tell me the equipment is fine, it's the brochure they gave me that is in fact wrong

(also, he told me that the Bradford-White local sales rep has been trying to get corporate to fix it for like three years)

  30. Daily writing prompt What was the best compliment you’ve received? View all responses

There are two answers to this question. One is serious and professional and I will not give any details about it. The other is a goofy thing from when I was a teenager.

There are actually two professional things that I could use here. Two people who reported to me both said things that affected me in very positive ways. I will not share either thing because I don’t care to break confidence. I’m like a priest hearing confession and I ain’t given anything up. Well… like a priest without all of the child rape and atrociously evil cover ups. So really nothing like a priest, but you get the idea. Okay, enough about this one.

The compliment I’ll share is silly. I think I was a sophomore in high school. My friend Mike and I were trying to learn new musical instruments. Guitar for me and bass for him. We had a friend who could play the drums. We got together and had a jam. The drummer had an older brother who played guitar. He was in the room with us, just hanging out and listening. I was pretty new at guitar, but I had been playing music for years (on the saxophone and briefly on the trumpet) so musically speaking I kinda knew what I was doing and as a result I was picking things up on guitar pretty quickly. While we were jamming away I did… something. I am not sure what, but I think I was probably improvising something. The drummer’s guitar playing brother stood up and said, “I gotta take a walk” and left the room. I guess I impressed him a little.

That’s it. That’s the compliment. I never forgot that. My ego swelled four sizes that day. I was so pleased with myself that I may have actually started to glow. The post script on this was that the drummer’s guitar playing brother should not have been disturbed by anything I did because he was good. He was way better than me. I’m guessing he still is.

There is a third potential answer to this question as well. It’s actually a series of things. They aren’t compliments per se, but they affected me in similar Earth rocking ways. First, there was this woman who agreed to go on a date with me. Nice! Second, about a year later I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said yes. Nice! About a year later we stood in front of our families and we both said, “I do” to each other. Nice! Like I said, they aren’t compliments in the strictest sense of the word, but they have a similar affect. They are each like a huge compliment on steroids and multiplied by about 10 zillion.

And there you have it, folks. My compliment history in a nutshell. Happy Monday, everyone.
