I’m going to go back to #Toot! for a bit to see if it's even vaguely viable after 10 months without an update… 🤞
all my favourite, more whimsical / customisable masto clients seem to be going the way of the dodo 😕

I'm gonna have to start compiling my own #iOS apps from the most recent not-shit-version source code & side-loading them via #TestFlight aren't I… 😮💨
maybe we're about to be in #Linux-like #BizarroWorld where people just #YOLO stuff onto their devices from private PPAs that #InternetRandos maintain for stuff like builds for not-officially-supported target OSes 😱
if you're an #IceCubes user on #iOS and see the update to v2.1.4 pop up in your app updates, I strongly suggest that you don't let it update^
it's a point-release 8 months after the previous minor bug-fix release but it has breaking changes in #UI / #UX & has a #showstopper #bug where it hangs when you attempt to attach a photo to a toot 🤦♀️

I’m annoyed that I got these issues but I’m hoping that others don't have to. it's seems like this release was pushed out quickly to address some issues with #iOS27 breaking some features for some users (I didn't experience this but ¯⧹(ツ)⧸¯) but it really should have been a genuine point-release #bugfix without introducing the breaking changes – and clearly more thorough testing was required as the "cure" seems much worse than the "disease" 😕
^ yes, I know this means turning off automatic updates & a painful process of manually updating every other app except this one. Apple could make this better by allowing users to pin specific apps to specific versions (at least for a period of time / number of releases) but that is not The Apple Way™ so we get the crappy process instead 💁♀️
and (hopefully) it goes without saying that "my threat model is not your threat model" so you do you, YMMV, etc.
@IceCubesApp I just installed v2.1.4. all display setting were reset on install, and I can no longer set a custom font 😕
are these known issues? (I didn't see any mention in the release notes or github)
OK, third bug: I tried adding a screenshot to this toot to show the font issue above – attempting to add a photo makes the app hang. first attempt I got as far as the being able to select an image after swiping up to the full-screen picker but couldn't actually attach it. the ✔️ button & cancel button did nothing, but the app hadn't hung (but I couldn't swipe the full-screen image picker down so I had to kill the app to recover
second & all subsequent attempts it just hangs immediately on displaying the small photo picker, before you can swipe it up for a full-screen view. killing the app is the only way to recover
I’ve cleared the media cache & rebooted the phone, issue still persists. I’m on iOS 27.0.1
let me know if you want me to open issues on github
**edit to add:* I’ve just noticed that tab customisation were also reset on installation of this version of #IceCubes 😕
another edit: ugh, it's not just the tab customisation were reset but also the "first" tab that you specify (previously first tab on the left) is now the middle tab and distantly know way to revert this UI design change? 😕
now I have to reorder my tabs and try to get used to the middle one always being highlighted 😕
yet another edit: if you include "Timeline" (your "home" feed, which includes your local instance plus anyone any instance members follow) as any of the five sequentially-numbered tabs, it is now displayed as the middle button regardless of where you chose to position it 😮💨
if you instead choose (e.g.) "Local", that displays in whatever tab position you selected but it removes the drop-down selector from the top of the feed so you can't switch between Local / Timeline / Federated etc. as you can from the Timeline tab
Thomas, please either revert this UI choice or at least give users the option to have the app continue to honour their choices for how they want these tab "customisations" to appear 🙏
a further edit: OK, IceCubes is randomly hanging when attempting to hit the "post toot" button, so you can't rely on it to compose toots without losing them. for anyone playing along at home I recommend composing your toots elsewhere & copy / pasting them in lest you lose them (or just switch to another masto client until this is fixed)
^ for non-IceCubes users, in the phone version of the app these are actually just buttons along the bottom bar that switch the full-screen view in the app
