  1. I see what they did there.

Today I learned that in 1726, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) was facing indefinite imprisonment in the notorious Bastille, so he asked French authorities to exile him to England as an alternative punishment.

His request was granted, but I feel like the English should have been gravely insulted.

Agreed, this could be artefact. In the UK it means what US English speakers would call a "fanny pack".

  5. Pete Buttigieg said about Vice Pres. JD Vance's verbal attack on Pope Leo: "That’s crazy. He’s been Catholic about as long as I’ve been middle-aged, and he thinks he can lecture the pope on Catholic theology”:

  6. 🎨 Oh, look! #Monet was the original #Picasso of petty insults! 🤡 Before he was drowning in water lilies, he was raking in francs by sketching the egos of Le Havre’s "who's who" with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Clearly, the real masterpiece was his early grasp of capitalism! 💰

    Dear Sir:

Thou eunuch of language; thou Englishman, who never was south the Tweed; thou servile echo of fashionable barbarisms; thou quack, vending the nostrums of empirical elocution; thou marriage-maker between vowels and consonants, on the Gretna-green of caprice…

  12. Alt text in my last repost reminded me of a phrase we always insulted each other with as kids: "Du hast 'ne Meise!"

du hast eine Meise = you have a chickadee

The implication is that said bird resides in your skull in place of brains, and that's why you're so flighty, weird, and foolish.

  13. I need a hard "K" sound cuss word that isn't nonsensical (yelling "Kangaroo wouldn't work). I don't like the multiple meanings of the most used one, and the others seem lacking without that hard "K" sound.
