I've also read Blanchard's sequel "The Mother." If "Peacekeeper" was an homage to #LeGuin, this is to #Atwood's #HandmaidsTale.
Grim & suspenseful. But it does not quite live up to its predecessor, as Blanchard is a better worldbuilder than storyteller, and her depiction of a stuck-in-the-past Europe is less convincing, imo, than her vision of a native American present without European colonialization.
And I hope the next one will be less gut-wrenching! Asia or the Islamic Empire?

@beandev Ich guck die auch grade und bin ehrlich gesagt etwas ambivalent. Die ersten anderthalb Staffeln - die ja noch weitgehend auf Atwoods Roman beruhten - fand ich unglaublich; jetzt wird es leider immer schablonenhafter, unausgearbeiteter, weniger plausibel.

The Atwood Propane Gas detector in our RV has reached its 84 months EOL. I know this because it's flashing its orange light, and beeping every minute or so. Neither of these behaviors is stopped by the Mute / Test button. The only way to stop the noise is to kill power to it, living us completely unprotected until a replacement arrives.
Do product designers not think of these things? What if that had started in the middle of the night? Was EOL really 84 months ±1 minute?!

Margaret #Atwood has said the plot of her book The Handmaid’s Tale, which tells a story of an #authoritarian #regime under which women are forced to reproduce, has become “more and more plausible” in recent years.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Atwood said she believed the plot was “bonkers” when she first developed the concept for the novel because the #US was the “ #democratic ideal ” at the time.

Is it true? Is it fair? And cui bono? Who profits? She will ask on any issue.
When an old person dies, “it is not a tragedy”, she reflects, “it is the culmination of their life”.
As she walks across the campus, there are audible gasps from students.

Has anybody read The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood? Thinking of finally getting a card at the University Library, we'll see if they remember that book I couldn't pay the fine on 45 years ago 😅 Our public library surprisingly doesn't have it.
It's about Penelope from the Odyssey, a novella, told in various styles, I think about it when I knit or crochet, sometimes: am I really fixing a problem, or just drawing out the process, like Penelope?
