Estaba viendo la película de "Cuando el destino nos alcance" junto con S.P., La Filósofa Urbana, y a veces me estremece mucho su peculiar sentido del humor tan... negro... y su visión tan cruda de la realidad. Resulta que viendo el filme surgió este diálogo entre nosotros:
Yo: 🤔 Me pregunto a qué sabrán esas galletas tan raras, ya sabes, el soylent verde.
S.P.: 🤔... 🤔...🤔... Pues la verdad supongo que depende de cada persona...
El remate te deja helado si conoces el secreto de la trama, pero más allá del chiste oscuro, me dejó pensando en cómo la ciencia ficción clásica de 1973 retrata de forma tan precisa el desapego humano y la normalización del horror ante las crisis. A veces el cine no es solo entretenimiento, sino un espejo incómodo de lo que podríamos llegar a permitir como sociedad si perdemos la empatía.

Si les gusta la ciencia ficción clásica con un trasfondo social crudo, hay una cinta de la década de los 70 que resulta una joya profética total. Les hablo de una producción que se filmó en 1973 y que está ambientada precisamente en un distópico año 2022. La trama nos lleva a una ciudad de Nueva York caótica, asfixiada por la sobrepoblación de más de 40 millones de habitantes, la contaminación extrema y una escasez de recursos tan brutal que la mayoría de la población solo puede sobrevivir alimentándose de unas pequeñas galletas procesadas de origen misterioso distribuidas por una corporación.
El valor real de esta película radica en cómo utiliza el suspenso y una investigación criminal policiaca para ponernos enfrente un dilema ético tremendo sobre los excesos del sistema industrial y la destrucción del medio ambiente. Es increíble notar cómo, a pesar de haberse filmado hace décadas, el guion toca temas sumamente actuales como la crisis climática, la pérdida de alimentos naturales y el control absoluto de las corporaciones sobre la vida de los ciudadanos menos favorecidos. Es una recomendación imprescindible para verla con ojos críticos el fin de semana, ya que nos demuestra que el cine de género de la vieja escuela siempre ha sido una de las mejores herramientas para analizar hacia dónde podemos terminar yendo como sociedad si no cuidamos el entorno.

The NEW Soylent Green
A Moses-like figure stands before the mic at an NRA convention and thunders, “I will give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.”
At the end of the sci-fi film Soylent Green, that same actor implores his detective boss to spread the news, “Soylent Green is people!”
In the movie, as the corpses pile up from an overcrowded, miserable earth, they are carted away in garbage trucks, secretly converted to Soylent Green, and fed back to the living. Soylent Green is better than the old Red and Yellow varieties, but it is scarce, so there are riots. A detective played by Charlton Heston discovers the deception. In a word, humanity has become cannibals, feeding upon itself, in a state-sanctioned system of cyclical violence.
Such is the world created by the NRA. It plays upon the irrational fears of a few to continue to thwart common sense gun legislation. Its largely successful lobbying over the years has distorted the original intention of the Second Amendment so much so that it has become almost impossible to pass laws more in keeping with the Founders’ intent.
When the bodies continue to pile up as a result of gun violence, and there is no legislative change primarily due to the lobbying of the NRA and the like, we are in every sense of the word disrespecting the dead and feeding upon ourselves.
In a state-sanctioned system of cyclical violence.
Like in Soylent Green.
And like the movie, the end result is not very pretty.
But go ahead. Watch the news.
Take another bite.
