In my childhood, my family visited Dollywood probably a dozen times, and they had hundreds of interactive exhibits for children. That place kindled within my mind a relentless curiosity and unbounded imagination (traits that make fascists tremble in their jackboots), and those types of childhood experiences contributed more to who I am as an adult today than anything I ever learned in school. By and large, my school teachers only taught me *what* to think. Dolly Parton was among a select few adults who, by their words and actions, taught me *how* to think.

I don't actually believe in an afterlife, but I like to imagine Dolly taking her seat at a small table in heaven, with Fred Rogers on her right, James Baldwin on her left, and Carl Sagan across from her. What a warm, thoughtful, nuanced, and intellectually stimulating discussion they could have together!
