  2. ❤️ Couples ❤️

"the one real love story of my life"

James Baldwin was 25 in 1949 when he met 17 year old Swiss painter Lucien Happersberger in a little bar called La Reine Blanche in Paris. After carousing several more bars the pair spent the night in Baldwin's bed. Happersberger was 'curious' seeing a Black American in Paris, + was naïve on the prejudices white Americans + French held. "I came from little Switzerland. The color of the skin did not play any role.". Later Baldwin would say they would "meet late in the day at a cafe + pool what money we'd managed to raise + then we'd eat. We shared everything"

It was at Happersberger family chalet that Baldwin would write his first novel 'Go Tell It on the Mountain'. Happersberger, in charge of the domestic life while Baldwin worked, remembers the moment his novel was finished when he heard Jimmy punching out loudly the final six letters "THE END."

Eventually Lucien would marry + the couple's relationship turned to lifelong friendship. Happersberger was at Baldwin's side at his deathbed in 1987

  4. Another Country

Finished reading this 1962 novel by James Baldwin and it has found a place among my favorite titles of all time - including Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, The Blood of Others and The Mandarins, both by Simone de Beauvoir and The Children of Violence Series by Doris Lessing ... The thread that I find binds these works is a collection of characters who are fully realized by the authors and are making decisions amid the turmoil of their given times and environment, based on their individual traits, rather than simply as a vehicle for a story the writer wants to tell.

  5. "within these narrow parameters of being, nothing appeals to us more than the notion of freedom — the feeling that we are free, that intoxicating illusion with which we blunt the hard fact that we are not."

I just finished watching #Baldwin's #Nigger, #1968 (the meaning is profound) and James is brilliant.

I love Dick Gregory's explanation of "white liberal", which every #white person, and #Black "#moderate" and #conservative, should consider and internalize.
