“What the computer people don’t realize, or they don’t care, is we’re dancing animals. We love to move around. And we’re not supposed to dance at all anymore.”

J. Patrick Patterson, October 1, 2026

" #KurtVonnegut (a former #InTheseTimes senior editor, by the way!) once told a story about refusing to buy 100 envelopes online: 'I’m going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope,' he said. 'I meet a lot of people.' The moral, he said, was that we’re here to enjoy the world and the people in it, a facet of human life computers have changed. Vinyl is the envelope. It makes you leave the house. 'And, of course, the computers will do us out of that,' he said. But 'what the computer people don’t realize, or they don’t care, is we’re dancing animals. We love to move around. And we’re not supposed to dance at all anymore.' "

A quotation from Vonnegut

And Lot’s wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people and their homes had been. But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human.
So she was turned into a pillar of salt. So it goes.

Courthouse News Service: Vonnegut heirs can proceed with challenge to Utah book removal law. “A federal judge allowed the heirs of Kurt Vonnegut to proceed Tuesday with their First Amendment challenge to a Utah law that calls for the removal of books with ‘sensitive’ material from the state’s public schools.”

Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless Your Mr. Rosewater is more poignant than ever.

It opens: A SUM OF MONEY is a leading character in this tale about people, just as a sum of honey might properly be a leading character in a tale about bees.

I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles. So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.

😵‍💫📚 #Kirja #KirjaMastodon #KurtVonnegut

A quotation from Vonnegut

For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes. But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course, that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere. “Blessed are the merciful” in a courtroom? “Blessed are the peacemakers” in the Pentagon? Give me a break!

@MostlyHarmless

they used to do this a lot (relatively speaking) in the past

for example in 1930 the #indiana bell building was rotated 90 degrees with 600 people still working inside, and gas/ heat/ electricity/ water/ sewage/ telephone still functional

https://indianahistory.org/blog/instead-of-moving-mountains-they-moved-a-building/

(weird side fact: the architecture firm that did this was established by #kurtVonnegut's granddad, and it was his dad who suggested they move it instead of demolish it)

"The arts are not a way to make a living. They're a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can."

"I've always regarded art as a sort of conversation. A novel is a conversation between the author and the reader. A painting is a conversation between the painter and the person who looks at the painting. A symphony is a conversation between the composer and the listener."

Far apart

There are too many of us and we are all too far apart.

It’s only five sentences!

As Vonnegut said, if you can’t write well, you probably don’t think as well as you think you do. There was something about a particular project that wasn’t clicking for people. I couldn’t describe what was wrong—why I couldn’t communicate clearly. The more I talked to key confidantes, the more I tried to explain it, and the more I listened, the more convinced I became that I didn’t know what I was talking about. I didn’t have something straight in my thinking. So I asked for a meeting of minds to craft a clear explanation. To write it clearly, I believed I would need to clarify my thinking.

Four people sat down to write a better description of a project. It took over four hours to write five sentences. They’re not particularly complicated sentences. The affect—the change in my perspective, the things I now see have been done wrong and need changing… The affect is vertiginous. I’ve begun sharing the sentences with key confidantes. I’m letting them set and I’m picking them up at intervals to see if their power persists.

Forget about my five sentences.

What’s something you could solve, improve, or take to a new level if you sat down and crafted five perfect sentences?

Could you do it in four sentences? …how about three? …two? …what about one?

ɕ

If you can’t write clearly

If you can’t write clearly, you probably don’t think nearly as well as you think you do.

Be soft!

Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe the world to be a beautiful place.
