  1. "The arts are not a way to make a living. They're a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can."

    ~ Kurt Vonnegut

  2. "I've always regarded art as a sort of conversation. A novel is a conversation between the author and the reader. A painting is a conversation between the painter and the person who looks at the painting. A symphony is a conversation between the composer and the listener."

    ~ Kurt Vonnegut

  7. A quotation from Kurt Vonnegut

The most important thing I learned on Tralfamadore was that when a person dies he only appears to die. He is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly for people to cry at his funeral. All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist. The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just that way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any moment that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1922-2007) American novelist, journalist
    Slaughterhouse-Five, ch. 2 (1969)

  10. I'm reading Kurt Vonnegut's "Galapagos".

This is a novel from **1985**... and, while it's not "great", I'd still recommend it for anyone living this current time, plus, it's kinda funny.

    It manages to:
    - describe AI techno-bros as what they are: self-centred assholes.
    - (shallowly) describe incels before those were a concept in our collective imagination.
    - (very subtly) establish a clear connection between all those self-proclaimed "apolitical" people and... nazis.

«Sé gentil. No dejes que el mundo te endurezca. No dejes que el dolor te haga odiar. No dejes que la amargura te robe la dulzura. Siéntete orgulloso de que, aunque el resto del mundo esté en desacuerdo, todavía crees que es un lugar hermoso.»

  13. “Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any #American to make money.

“They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves.”

  15. Fifteen best books first read in 2025

Listed below are the fifteen books enjoyed most during 2025. All were first read this year. As is usual, and as can be seen from the list, non-fiction is strongly preferred over fiction. Nearly a century of literature is represented below with Willa Cather’s 1927 novel, Death Comes for the Archbishop novel being the oldest. Seven (7) of the 15 books listed were written by or principally by women, including my top-rated book for 2025.

Peace and good reading to all!

  16. @ColinTheMathmo In one of Kurt Vonnegut's novels, each chapter has an epigraph, and the source is always given as “So-and-so's Great Book of Quotations”. Maybe we should follow this convention. 🙂

Or better, there should be a convention that distinguishes between quotes with a well-established origin and those for which it is not known. (One could write “Attributed to Oscar Wilde” in the latter case, maybe.)
