White Knuckle // Thee Soreheads // Caniche // Hatchday
L'Escogriffe Bar, Thursday, May 15 at 08:00 PM EDT
L'Escogriffe presents:
White Knuckle (egg punk, punk)
Embodying egg punk, an internet-spawned microgenre marked by lo-fi aesthetics and satirical edge, White Knuckle plays with cheap synth and loud guitars that seem to have escaped from a dark cartoon and a nervous high speed energy reminiscent of egg punk projects Prison Affair, Snõõper or Pressure Pin. Live, you get the feeling the singer Trevor Bushey (Shapes, Time Ghost) might crack his own shell at any moment, teetering on the edge of a violent outburst. Yet paradoxically, this very tension creates the feeling of a safe space to release our own anxiety. (from Le Büro Zine)
https://white-knuckle.bandcamp.com/album/icstq
Thee Soreheads (garage rock, riot grrrl)
Four slightly angry punks (Maria, Ally, Hugh, and Max) based in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal). Known for their riotous live performances, Thee Soreheads bring a hard-hitting Riot Grrrl sound influenced by surf rock, rock n roll, and garage. From consent, to calling out white supremacists, their witty confrontational lyrics and catchy riffs meld to create wild chaotic anthems of big issues.

Self-Titled Summer | Joan Jett (1980, US)
Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 345 on The List, submitted by mfennvt. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Point of origin(s): In 1975, at the age of 16, Joan Jett played ukulele in an audition for rock producer Kim Fowley, who was looking to assemble “an all-girl answer to Grand Funk.” Jett was recruited as the guitarist for The Runaways, who would release their s/t debut the following year, and then three more studio albums over the next 2 years, the last two with Jett also on lead vocals. The group officially broke up in April 1979, at least in part due to the members each wanting to go in different directions, with Jett wanting to delve more into punk/glam rock. In the year that followed, Jett would work as producer for a few bands (including for the Germs’ debut/only album, (GI)), record this, her s/t solo debut, and start her own record label, Blackheart Records, with songwriter/producer Kenny Laguna. Rejected by 23 major US labels, Jett’s solo debut was released in May 1980 on her own label, reissued in January 1981 under the title of its opening track, Bad Reputation.
- Tasting notes: Punk rock, glam rock, kicking ass and taking names, Kat Stratford as an album, regret (because I missed seeing her live in my city last month :ablobcatcry:)
- Standout track: “Bad Reputation”, obvs; “You Don’t Own Me”
- Where are they now?: Immediately following this album, Jett and Laguna formed the Blackhearts, and Jett has since released 11 additional studio albums with 10 under “Joan Jett and the Blackhearts” (their first being the 1981 I Love Rock ‘n Roll). The group is still going, and last released Mindsets, an EP of new material in 2023. And, somewhere in there, Jett has: acted in a number of films and TV shows and on Broadway; signed and produced a number of bands; supported a number of causes, including releasing an album in 1995 with the surviving members of The Gits (Evil Stig) to raise money to investigate the murder of singer Mia Zapata (we’ll look at The Gits in a future spotlight); become known as the “Godmother of Punk”, “Original Riot Grrrl”, and “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”; had a Barbie made of her; been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; etc. etc…. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are currently touring the US with Billy Idol, until end of September.

"Ableist Slurs"
What is a slur? What is an ableist slur? Is the consideration of a slur at the at the discretion of the speaker, the recipient or a third party?
Websters defines a slur as:
slur: [noun] an insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo : aspersion. a shaming or degrading effect : stain, stigma.Lizzo's song GRRRLZ, brought outrage by many for her use of the word "sp*z" in the opening stanza. After the outcry, Lizzo changed the lyric.
Weeks later, Beyonce’ also found public disapproval because of her song “Heated”, which contained a disparaging term about a form of cerebral palsy know as spastic diplegia. She also apologized and made the nessesary correction. It’s nice to see some people own, and make amends for their mistakes.
Last week I posted the following:
“Simply put:
Ableism is to disability, as Racism is to Race.
Slurs of any kind are unacceptable and have no place in society.”In regard to racial slurs but, considering ableism:
J. Alan HartSouthworth, a diversity and inclusion consultant in Potomac, Maryland: (said)
“The definition of a “racial slur” is rather vague. I would think that if anyone says anything that negatively impacts or speaks negatively about another group, (WHETHER OR NOT a “racial slur”) that it should not be tolerated.
Since there is not official list of “racial slurs,” it has to be based on interpretation by the people who can hear the word(s) – whether that is the ‘target’ group or bystanders. …but if it is defined as a ‘statement that is divisive, contentious, disruptive or in some way does harm,” ….
It is a slur, to finish this person’s statement myself.I have had many of the standard issue ableist slurs hurled at my soul countless times including: “freak", “nutjob", “fruitcake", "weirdo", “dumbass" and the far too common, and seeminly accepted word, “crazy".
A few unorthodox things I’ve been stabbed in the heart with include: being told by a former friend that he does "not want to hear what comes out of" my "twisted little brain", after I gave my opinion. Medical imagery actually shows my neck, spine and brain are slightly askew. How very thoughtful some friends are.
The most memorable (or hardest to forget) slur was, “F#¿&ing psychotic psycho b!#¿h". This one seemed to be a favorite of the neighbor that I did nothing to, except live next door, request to be left alone and apparently, continue to breathe.
Just last week, a thread was discussing how pleasant and interesting everyone on Mastodon is. One participant on c.im, a former teacher (according to the profile), commented how interesting people on Mastodon are and added:
“Interesting in a good way. Not the Ummm...He's Crazy, But I'm Going to Pretend I'm Polite”.
This person had another post complaining about a limited amount of “special education" teachers. “Special" is also considered an ableist term by many people living with invisible disabilities as well. Shaping young minds with archaic attitudes of ignorance, how wonderful. Needless to say, I did not find that conversation very interesting or pleasant.
So what do you think? Are words like “crazy" and “freak" a slur when used in a derogatory way and directed at persons with invisible disabilities? I asked 25 people with invisible disabilities today and all ageed, these are slurs. Should the government draft legislation regarding ableist slurs to include the disabled community, which makes up 26% of the US population? Who should decide what an ableist slur is… the masses, the government or the victims of this kind of hate speech?
What do I think? Try one on me or any disabled person within earshot and find out. Think before you use words that can wound. A consideration we can all learn from.

Puffer (Montreal) + Waterschade (Haarlem) & Proto's (Amsterdam)
OCCII, Thursday, May 14 at 08:00 PM GMT+2
Montreal’s PUFFER is back with a slab of lumpen punk’n’roll which offers a little more nuance and intrigue than your usual troglodyte Oi!-tinged hardcore. Vocals sound not too dissimilar to what I’d imagine it’d be like if a rottweiler learned to sing. So much groove here with the tambourine flourishes and guitar solos, a bit like if MC5 cut their hair and had a wash.
Waterschade is a young punk band from Haarlem who do not like patriarchy, racism and, of course, capitalism. They express this with tight bass lines, hard riffs and lots of screaming. With a mix of hardcore punk and riot grrrl, a moshpit and fun show is guaranteed!
The Protos are a primitive, fuelled-by-hate garage punk trio from Amsterdam It’s a KBD slab of in-your-face, loud and stupid perfect punk.
FFO Reatards, Kool and the Gangbangers, Carbonas, Teengenerate, Bad Times… Its gonna be a great show, be there to support the first bands.
Doors are at 20:00 and we will get you sorted for 10 euros!

Swaza6 Unleashes Dark Alternative Anthem “Wake Up In A Cemetery”
For those who gravitate toward the edgy and the underground, Swaza6 has delivered a new single, “Wake Up in a Cemetery.” This dark, cinematic, and high-impact track is built for the fringes of alternative music, offering a marvelous blend of indie rock, riot grrrl energy, and heavy metal weight.
The song’s aggressive production and haunting atmosphere create a sense of urgency that is rarely captured so effectively. It is a standout release for fans of boundary-pushing music that refuses to be pinned down to a single genre. If you are looking for a track that mirrors the intensity of a late-night descent into the alternative scene, Swaza6 has provided the perfect soundtrack.

Also (mostly for the German listeners I'm afraid) I will explain the organ point composition technique which is featured even in modern music (and without an organ if you are lucky).
And I will merge Johann Sebastian Bach's name into "Johannes Bach" by misstake at one point. I honestly know better! I can say this because the show is preproduced (and still I didn't catch this before uploading it to the radio station; this is bad!).

Sleater-Kinney Play “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun”
Listen to this track by incendiary Pacific Northwest punk rock power trio Sleater-Kinney. It’s “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun”, a cut from their landmark 2000 record, All Hands on the Bad One. From 1999’s The Hot Rock, the band were on a path away from their riot grrrl associations, moving toward more complex and nuanced musical territories. They did this in part by making key additions to their core sound. This included more prominent backing vocals from drummer Janet Weiss and lead guitarist Carrie Brownstein’s expanded role as co-lead vocalist on some cuts as a companion and foil for rhythm guitarist and lead singer Corin Tucker.
This tune helps to solidify their developing sound, bursting with pop charm and balancing the abrasiveness of the past with a kind of new wave-meets-Sixties-pop sensibility. Brownstein and Tucker’s guitars are fiery, fizzing with immediate energy, while Weiss’ drums are a primitive pulse throbbing behind them. The song’s lyrics suggest subject matter common to rock n’ roll songwriters; life on tour playing shows and hanging out with other bands on the bill afterwards. The old adage of write what you know applies heavily here.
This song is indeed about what it’s like to be on tour. But it goes deeper though, suggesting something about the social environment of the times that still didn’t quite take girl bands all that seriously as artistic equals. What’s a tight, highly competent, and unique sounding rock ‘n’ roll band to do in that kind of atmosphere? Well, write a song that sends all of that up, for one thing.
The turn of the 21st century was the age of macho-rock’s return in the form of bro-centric rap-rock and also of post-grunge po-faced frontmen with messiah complexes. In the Nineties, female-fronted bands gained significant ground in North America and in Britain. Male allies like Kurt Cobain decried sexism and toxic masculinity of established rock acts coming out of the 1980s. Things were changing by then on a social level as well as on musical ones. But by 2000, things seemed to be changing back.
Sleater-Kinney live at the Riviera Theatre, Chicago, June 2005 (photo: Sara)The mainstream rock world was awash with furrowed brows and dour expressions of dudes with a purpose. Of course, that purpose had little to do with anything outside of their own images of themselves as either self-important Jesus figures or bacchanalian gods of a golden nature. There was a lot of performative anger and put-on anguish in mainstream rock music as a kind of thrift store version of the grunge days. By 1999 and into 2000, it was reduced to a prop to serve an image more so than to communicate personal struggles or political issues with any level of authenticity.
For many bands, the legitimate anger of the past became nothing more than a piece of theatre, a texture and an aesthetic to be commodified and integrated into a musical style and approach to stage presentation. Because at that point, what did any rock star celebrated in the mainstream genuinely have to be so angry about, anyway?
Actually, there was plenty.
Rampant inequality in the industry was still very much in place across racial and gender lines, for one. And violence against women continued to be a mainstay and of specific concern. During musical events, women and girls were still not safe. Some were assaulted at high profile rock shows of the era. In the end, theatrical anger isn’t so volatile as the real thing and it’s much easier to sell. Very importantly, it’s not something anyone has to examine or do anything about.
The band who wrote this fun-loving song had proven themselves time and time again as eloquent communicators of serious subjects including the complex natures of sexuality, gender, and social change. They certainly expressed the appropriate anger that arises because of those issues in other songs, having done so more authentically than most by 2000. Since there was no need for them to put on rock airs as serious artists, “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun” wears a smirk, not a scowl. It’s full of humour, not anger or bitterness. This only adds to its charm, and sets it well apart from what was happening in music by the kick-off to the 21st century.
It knows something we don’t know.
With that knowing sense of humour in place, it makes an important roundabout point about what a rock ‘n’ roll attitude is and what it is not. And very importantly, “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun” really is fun. This is at least in part because of that knowing quality; that for all their pretentions, the rock star too above it all to hang out with their girl band tourmates is comically missing the point and/or demonstrates that they don’t know who or what they’re dealing with when it comes to rock ‘n’ roll. That this song is a lighthearted pisstake instead of an enraged missive only contributes to how well it skewers the object of the comedy, and also how adeptly it understands the gravity of its own subject matter.
You can hear the sympathetic smile and the affectionate shake of the head in it, knowing the score far better than any aloof rock star at the top of the bill stricken with an inflated ego and never mingling with the hoi polloi of opening acts. Who could react to any kind of above-it-all attitude with anything other than bemusement at best?
You’re no rock n’ roll fun
Like a piece of art
That no one can touchYour head’s always up in the clouds
Writing your songs
Won’t you ever come down?– “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun”, Sleater-Kinney
At it’s core and in the middle of how much fun and full of cheekiness it is, “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun” communicates a very important idea; that the whole point of rock ‘n’ roll is to communicate the ideals of openness and inclusion for musicians and fans alike. There’s nothing that makes music scenes or any single artistic event more fun and more socially significant than when people of various backgrounds, experiences, and identities can easily, safely, and respectfully find their way in and have a positive experience once they get there no matter who they are. This means helping to create an environment where this can happen for everyone concerned while having the most possible fun together at the same time.
For rock ‘n’ roll, the fun of it is a large part of why it’s been so important. Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be open, not closed off. In a lighthearted and very effective way, “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun” suggests a solid point that frames rock music as a force that’s all the more vital; that snobbery, self-importance, prejudice, bullshit gatekeeping, and violence against women are the least rock ‘n’ roll attitudes and practices that ever were.
After a break and and extended hiatus period as a band from 2006 to 2014, Sleater-Kinney are a going concern today, active as a duo between founding members Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. You can keep up with them at sleater-kinney.com.
For more on the band and the social and musical environment around the time that “You’re No Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun” and All Hands on the Bad One came out, read this article from Far Out Magazine.
Enjoy!

Heavenly Share Details About Their New Album And New Single “Excuse Me”
Photo courtesy of the band.Heavenly are seen as the originators of a whole genre of music – known to some as ‘jangle’, others as ‘twee’ and to the band themselves as ‘indiepop.’ As fiercely independent as any punk band, but as sweetly melodic as any chart-topping act, Heavenly combine sharp-edged politics with shamelessly joyful pop music.
Highway To Heavenly shares this recipe with the band’s first four albums, all of which were released in the 1990s at a time when sensitive indie types in the UK were sheltering from the prevailing macho-rock storm under the Sarah Records umbrella, and when women in the US were starting to find their Riot Grrrl voices in the small town of Olympia, where labels like K and Kill Rock Stars were designing a new creative space.
Heavenly were on Sarah Records in the UK and on K in the US – and maybe this is a useful shorthand for understanding the band’s ability to meld the attitude of American Riot Grrrl bands with the pop charms of the English indie scene. In terms of style, Heavenly presented an androgynous look – short hair and pinafores for Amelia and Cathy – while Peter Rob and Mathew determinedly avoided the theatrics of male rock.
Heavenly did not want to fit in with the hyper-gendered corporate music scene of the 1990s, and the band has stayed determinedly independent ever since (this new album is released on Rob and Amelia’s Skep Wax label). The new songs on Highway To Heavenly (Feb. 27) are full of anger, of grief, of empathy, of love, and set themselves in opposition to the resurgence of the cold ‘masculine energy’ that is making the world a miserable, aggressive place today.
Heavenly has recently enjoyed a huge resurgence of interest from a younger generation of fans, who have cottoned on to Heavenly’s music, but also embraced the band’s inclusive version of feminism. ‘Portland Town’ is a joyful celebration of a place where diversity is welcomed. ‘Press Return’ is a demolition of those men who think technology and wealth make them winners rather than sad losers. ‘Excuse Me’ is an outburst of punk energy, as effervescent as a song on the first Undertones album, gleefully celebrating a teenage romance with the nerdiest boy in school. ‘A Different Beat’ tells the entire story of a doomed relationship, its heroine falling for and then escaping from an oppressive man, before heading for the metaphorical disco of freedom.
Heavenly have clearly been to a disco or two lately: opening track ‘Scene Stealing’ feels like a distant cousin of Blondie’s ‘Heart Of Glass’ and tells the story of self-obsessed YouTube influencers who don’t know how to treat women with respect. By contrast, album closer ‘That Last Day’ may be the most poignant song about bereavement you will hear all year, certainly the only one you’ll want to sing along to. It’s all pop here, but Highway To Heavenly has a huge range of tones and moods.
The band comprises original members Amelia Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Cathy Rogers and Rob Pursey, who are now joined on drums by Ian Button. (An important element of the Heavenly story was the loss of Mathew Fletcher, who took his own life just before the fourth album was released. It took Amelia, Peter, Cathy and Rob a long time to get over the loss; maybe it took even longer to find a drummer as good as Ian.)
The new Heavenly have played a number of sold-out shows in the past couple of years, where older fans have mingled with new devotees. The band are looking forward to their slow-motion international tour in the first half of 2026, with dates in the UK, the US, Canada, France, Greece and Spain.
Highway To Heavenly was recorded at Rumbaba (Deptford, London) and at The Sunday School (Kent). It was produced by Toby Burroughs.
