  2. I've written this blog post on worshipping the Norse primordial cow, #Auðumbla. She's an important symbol of fertility, sustenance, and the land, and and as large herbivores her children, the aurochs, were an important part of ancient ecosystems. In this post learn about her place in Norse mythology and maybe your own practice, as well as the ecology of the extinct aurochs. Some researchers are trying to bring them back.

  4. Ulfheðnar

    Sing me your galdrar
    Glad of War
    Stomp the beat
With the butt of your spear

Tonight I wear the wolf skin
Earth and sweat in my nose
The pack and I are one
Tooth and claw and wild grin

    We howl to your tune
    Shields in our teeth
    Let the madness come
    As swift as victory

    Sing us your galdrar
    War Father
    We whine at your heels
    Weapons waiting for your hand

    Release us on your enemies
    Foaming lips and feral eyes
    We are frenzy made flesh
    Taught muscles like bowstrings

The fog of war thick in our heads
    Thick hides on our backs
    We howl through your dance
    Your songs build our rage

    Sing us your galdrar
    Battle Wolf
    Nothing can touch us
Not fire not iron not fear

  12. I'm an ecologist and having a career in that field has made a huge mark on my polytheist practice. I know pagans tend to be a bit crunchy by nature, but my education and training inform the way I see the world and that includes my religious ideology.

I'm not living in ancient or even modern Iceland, or Sweden, or Poland, or Scotland. I tend to focus on local plant and animal life and how they tie into my views on gods related to fertility, the land, and the seasons. Bird migrations inform my shifts in seasonal practice. I see #Freyja in my local red-tailed hawks. #Óðinn in the common ravens on campus. I know when to expect thunder storms and give to #þórr ahead of time, while giving to #Freyr during the milder rainy season. When crocus bulbs begin to pop up they tell me we're entering Spring and to thank #Mokosz. An #Cailleach blows in with the first frost.

One of course doesn't need to be a scientist to be keyed in like this, I know plenty of pagans who are not and are just as keyed in. For me though it's second nature, no pun intended. Having a localized practice brings me closer to the gods in a way that makes sense to me. It also informs how I interact with the land wights, making sure to leave offerings safe for local plants and animals when outdoors. It's brought me into the flow of life around me and I'm at grateful for it.

    I lIke your drawings!

Modern Heathens celebrate Mother's Night, usually on the 20th - the eve of the Solstice. It's a celebration of both our physical mothers and the Mother Goddesses, in particular, Frigg in her role as the primary Mother Goddess.

(A side note to that: In recent years, I've actually heard some Heathens who've apparently been lnspired by Marvel's comic book portrayal of Frigg/Freya [who they often conflate 🙄] as the All-Mother. No idea what I think about that!)

It's also a time to reflect on the work of the year. That stems from the theory that on Mother's Night for the old Norse, women were to have completed all of their spinning and weaving for the year, and the holiday was also the start of a break in their usual Fibre work until the new year started.

  16. Óminnishegri heitir
    sá er yfir ölðrum þrumir,
hann stelr geði guma; þess fugls fjöðrum
ek fjötraðr vark í garði Gunnlaðar.

The mind-stealing heron hovers over feasts
    waiting to seize men's wits;
    that bird's feathers fettered me
when I came to Gunnlod's court.

    Stanza 13 of the Hávamál

So it wasn’t the mead that caused it, it was the mind-stealing heron — riiight. I can relate.

  17. Time to redo my #introduction.

My name is Shaseni ("SHOSS-en-ee") and I live in #Colorado having immigrated from Scotland in the aughts. I'm quirky, and long retired from software development and teaching. I've been on Mastodon since April 2018.

My paganism is #Kemetic, working with the same deities that Ancient Egyptians worshipped, and my magic is #heka. Shaseni is a Kemetic name given to me by the goddess Nit (Neith) and the god Set, and it means "I tread on my enemies."

My pagan journey has taken me from living in a Hindu ashram when I was 20, through Taoism, the White Eagle Lodge, Heathenry, Kuan Yin and Buddhism, through to Kemetic Orthodoxy. I'm now in my 70s, and I feel as though I'm on fairly good terms with many deities and several buddhas.

Since my 20s, I've been involved with #healing, #magic, and practiced and taught many forms of #divination. I do read professionally. My favorite is Robin Scott's #UrbanTarot as I share her view that magic and wisdom belong not only to forgotten forests, places untouched by human hands, and to ages long lost to memory, but to my world, where around me I see beauty, wonder, and magic in the metropolis and power under the pavement.

I'm a #writer: a #storyteller and #poet manqué. My works are out there, under various pen names, if you're desperate. You'll find an overcooked motley of prose and poems from midnight streets; eat quickly and don't ask what the meat is.

I'm #transfem, #femsexual, and married. I'm politically left. I talk too much, eat too much, drink too little, love good curry, read romantic #yuri #manga, and embrace the Absurd.

  18. A Poem for Freyja

    Your voice so smooth
    Pulls me awake
    From the depths of dreams
    The bottom of a lake

    Your golden tears
    Restore my second sight
Through the groves of dark bramble
    I see Brísingamen’s light

    Through that darkness
    When stillness holds my name
    You guide my vision
    Igniting the flame

    Magic and power
    Your wisdom awakens
    A rushing stream
    My soul shaken

    Drowning my old form
    Emerging something new
    Shedding this skin
    Into what you always knew

    Great Lady
    In thanks I give
    Gifts of honey and amber
    A new life to live

  19. Another day, another argument about 'heritage'. I'm not actually interested in taking sides in that argument.

The whole argument itself, and every side of, it is un-ancestral.

Modern heathenry is a religion of converts. When we claim that we are one of the fastest-growing religions on Earth-- we are also saying, by logical necessity, that the majority of people who practice our faith are first- and second-generation converts from other religious beliefs. 1/3

  20. Uhm... #introduction

Nothing really to say about me as a person, I have crippling #anxiety & so no life/accomplishments to speak of. Here are some of my interests, I'm an expert on none.

2026 update: I post political stuff & am kind of inconsistent with warnings/tags. I see such things bother some users, but I'm tired of policing everything I say in my own space (plus bots auto-repost me when I use political tags), so, just a heads-up you may want to mute me.

I welcome followers & try to reciprocate, but if you seem like a bot, you're a charity account (I'm on gov't support myself, sorry), or I can't figure out why you followed me, or if you post "Genocide Joe/Killer Kamala/Both sides are equally bad" content, I will almost certainly not follow back. Please just avoid me.

Apologies if I'm doing anything wrong, I mean no offense.
