  1. …Compared to the prose suttas, those poems present Buddha as a more human, ascetic, solitary sage (muni) who abandons ALL views; who doesn't study under Āḷāra and Uddaka; doesn't do a life-long lecture tour; skips the arūpajhāna level of neither-perception-nor-nonperception; and other interesting differences. Give them a read.

  6. A quotation from Bertrand Russell

The happy life is to an extraordinary extent the same as the good life. Professional moralists have made too much of self-denial, and in so doing have put the emphasis in the wrong place. Conscious self-denial leaves a man self-absorbed and vividly aware of what he has sacrificed; in consequence it fails often of its immediate object and almost always of its ultimate purpose. What is needed is not self-denial, but that kind of direction of interest outward which will lead spontaneously and naturally to the same acts that a person absorbed in the pursuit of his own virtue could only perform by means of conscious self-denial.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
Conquest of Happiness, Part 2, ch. 17 “The Happy Man” (1930)

  7. Hey #makeup, #skincare, and #candy companies, how about you make some #LentCalendars instead of #AdventCalendars? Since #lent is more about #asceticism, the calendars could have some restraint to them, making them less indulgent than #advent. Like the products might be #vegan, #sugarfree, #fairtrade, #fragrancefree, etc. I've always felt there's an uneven emphasis on #advent and #christmas than #lent and #easter. This could make the demand more bearable! Think about it.

  8. A quotation from Orwell

The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection, that one is sometimes willing to commit sins for the sake of loyalty, that one does not push asceticism to the point where it makes friendly intercourse impossible, and that one is prepared in the end to be defeated and broken up by life, which is the inevitable price of fastening one’s love upon other human individuals. No doubt alcohol, tobacco and so forth are things that a saint must avoid, but sainthood is also a thing that human beings must avoid.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1949-01), “Reflections on Gandhi,” Partisan Review

  11. William Burkitt, #Anglican, on bible story of Lazarus (Lk 16). The rich man is “censured” in hell not for his wealth, but his senuality, forgetting to feed the hungry man with superfluities from his table.

Are the “censures” that would come today, more likely to be for the crime of criticizing the rich?

How can you remember to feed the hungry with your superfluities?
