The Grade I listed Coronation Stone is an ancient sarsen stone block, believed to have been the site of the coronation of seven Anglo-Saxon kings, Æthelstan (in 925), Eadred (946) and Æthelred the Unready (979). Edward the Elder, Edmund I, Eadwig and Edward the Martyr are also thought to have been consecrated in the town.
In 1730, it was recovered from the chapel of the collapsed Church of St Mary and placed in the market square. -
