En Providence, a finales del siglo XIX, nació un hombre cuya vida transcurrió en la sombra… y cuya imaginación terminaría iluminando uno de los rincones más inquietantes de la literatura moderna: H. P. Lovecraft.
Desde su infancia, marcada por la enfermedad, la pérdida y una profunda sensación de aislamiento, Lovecraft creció con una percepción del mundo distinta a la de la mayoría.
No fue un autor que simplemente escribiera historias de terror; fue alguien que transformó su propia visión del universo en una filosofía literaria donde el ser humano ocupa un lugar insignificante frente a fuerzas antiguas, indiferentes y, en muchos casos, incomprensibles.Su infancia estuvo condicionada por tragedias tempranas.
Su padre desapareció en un hospital psiquiátrico cuando él era aún un niño, y su madre, con una personalidad inestable y sobreprotectora, terminó también institucionalizada años más tarde.
Ese entorno familiar, unido a su salud frágil y a una vida social limitada, moldeó un carácter reservado, introspectivo y propenso a la ansiedad.A pesar de ello, Lovecraft desarrolló una curiosidad intelectual notable desde muy joven.
Se interesó por la astronomía, la historia antigua y la mitología clásica, alimentando una imaginación que más tarde se traduciría en mundos ficticios cargados de coherencia interna.
Sin una formación académica formal completa, se convirtió en un lector constante y un escritor autodidacta, construyendo poco a poco su propio universo literario.Su entrada en el mundo de la escritura no fue inmediata ni triunfal.
Durante años participó en círculos amateurs, intercambiando cartas y relatos con otros autores.
Este sistema epistolar no solo le permitió mantenerse activo creativamente, sino también establecer conexiones con otros escritores que más tarde jugarían un papel importante en la difusión de su obra.
En ese contexto nacieron algunos de sus primeros relatos, donde ya se empezaban a perfilar los elementos que definirían su estilo: lo desconocido, lo ancestral y lo incomprensible.En su vida personal, el matrimonio con Sonia Greene marcó una etapa breve pero significativa.
La convivencia en Nueva York, lejos de mejorar su situación, acentuó su incomodidad con la vida urbana y su percepción de rechazo hacia ciertos entornos sociales.
La relación terminó separándose con el tiempo, sin descendencia, y Lovecraft regresó a Providence, donde pasó sus últimos años en relativa pobreza.Su muerte, en 1937, pasó prácticamente desapercibida.
Murió joven, a los 46 años, víctima de cáncer intestinal agravado por complicaciones renales.
Lejos de la fama, dejó tras de sí una obra que en vida tuvo una difusión limitada, pero que con el tiempo sería redescubierta y valorada por generaciones posteriores.Origen del miedo: Su terror a "lo diferente" o "lo extranjero" (especialmente tras vivir en Nueva York) se tradujo en su obra como el miedo a lo híbrido y a la degradación de la raza humana.
Este aspecto aparece reflejado de forma indirecta en varios de sus relatos y cartas personales, y es uno de los puntos más debatidos cuando se analiza su pensamiento.▪️Su tumba: Fue enterrado en el panteón familiar en el cementerio de Swan Point. Años después, fans instalaron una lápida con la frase de sus cartas: "I am Providence" ("Yo soy Providence").
Con el tiempo, ese añadido se convirtió en un símbolo de su conexión con la ciudad que lo vio nacer y morir.▪️Hipersensibilidad al frío: No soportaba temperaturas por debajo de los 20°C; el frío lo hacía sentir físicamente enfermo.
Este rasgo aparece repetidamente en testimonios de su entorno y en sus propias cartas, donde describía su incomodidad con climas fríos.▪️Aversión al sexo y la luz: Se cree que se mantuvo virgen hasta su matrimonio a los 30 años y prefería la vida nocturna.
Más allá de interpretaciones, su correspondencia refleja una personalidad reservada en lo íntimo y con cierta distancia hacia lo físico y lo social.▪️Amante de los gatos y el helado: A pesar de su carácter sombrío, sentía adoración por los gatos y era un fanático obsesivo del helado.
Estos detalles aportan un contraste más humano y cotidiano dentro de una figura generalmente asociada a lo oscuro.Murió en el anonimato y la miseria, alimentándose a veces solo con latas de comida caducada para ahorrar dinero para sellos y papel.
Su situación económica en los últimos años fue precaria, dependiendo en parte de ayudas puntuales y manteniendo su actividad epistolar casi hasta el final.Lo que distingue a Lovecraft no es solo su biografía, sino la coherencia de su universo literario.
En relatos como “La llamada de Cthulhu”, “En las montañas de la locura” o “El horror de Dunwich”, construyó una mitología propia donde entidades antiguas, civilizaciones olvidadas y conocimientos prohibidos forman parte de una realidad que escapa a la comprensión humana.Su influencia se extendió más allá de sus propios textos gracias a autores como August Derleth y Donald Wandrei, quienes ayudaron a preservar su obra mediante Arkham House.
A partir de ahí, su universo se expandió con aportaciones de otros escritores, dando forma al llamado “Mito de Cthulhu”.Entre los elementos más curiosos de su legado destaca el Necronomicon, un libro ficticio que, por la forma en que fue descrito en sus relatos, llegó a ser tomado en serio por muchos lectores durante años.
Esa mezcla entre ficción detallada y apariencia de realidad es una de las claves de su impacto duradero.Con el tiempo, su figura ha sido reinterpretada desde múltiples perspectivas.

Again, I found that movie so Lovecraftian. The story is similar to "Shadows Over Innsmouth".
• Innsmouth's people are from fishes. Kusukata's people are strawmen.
• Innsmouth have the Dagon cult, Kusukata have the scarecrows festival.
• both villages are isolated and far from safe places.
• Kaouru experiences the same horror as the Innsmouth's narrator.
And so much more. I love this !

As the moon touched the hazy rim of the ocean, the Cat Who Stole Dreams indulged in one last #meal of the inn’s famed curried prawns, a #mash of almonds and sweet cream, and #distilled lime blossom liqueur. It was just a sip, enough to fend off the night's chill, no more.
Then, as the full dark of night blanketed Minashi-by-the-Sea, she donned her black, dew-spangled cape and her quietest #slippers and went out into the #late night. All was still except for the laughter of the fountains. The chorus of cicadas and revelers had long fallen silent. Not even the few unfortunates stirred by dreams of dark things said to slither from Hypnos Nor Slid’s House heard the soft footsteps of Kurotsuki.
With catlike grace, she climbed the outer walls of the High Citadel of Perpetual Petals. So lithe was her ascent that not a single petal of the trees that ringed that lofty place was disturbed, and thus the #wards that are triggered by their fall remained silent. The silent monitors, without the walls, perhaps saw a shadow flicker, but nothing more.
Thus, Kurotsuki Kaibyō reached a vantage from which she could observe the Toads of Leng cavorting and hear the fateful shrilling of the piping within the tower. The #luminous toads as they danced #round the tower #instilled no fear in her heart, yet a #current of dread set her fur to bristle, hearing the piping that spoke of Nyarlathotep, for it came from far beyond the ken of man.
Woe betide the mortal who, in a dream or drugged state, passes through the portals to that eldritch creature’s dimension. Better to face the nightgaunts or to be torn asunder by the ghouls of Pickman’s ilk than to glimpse the dwellers of that realm.
Shaken but undeterred, the queen of thieves came away that night ready to plunder the heart of Minashi-by-the-Sea.
