  2. I think I need to start a howl in the Colorado area. Start otherkin meets. Because I feel like our spaces are actually shrinking, that we used to have a space in these conventions but the fandom spaces are all about farming aura and subs and generating content and monetizing identity and if you aren't popular, you're not going to matter.

The next phase of safe space to BE therian and otherkin has to come from ourselves. And I'mma need to make that space, or we're just not going to have that.

In any case, this does summarize why i'm pulling away from the fandom. I'm still a furry, sure, I still love fox and anthro content. But what I need to be part of, is something that fulfills that deep spirit need. I need to be amongst my own kind. I need therian and otherkin spaces more than I need furry ones, and I need to go outside more...

  3. The ultimate point here is that I didn't become part of the furry fandom because I was a fan of anthropomorphics. I joined it because I AM A FOX and it gave a safe space to fox out. And so it went for the next 25 years or so.

But a lot about the furry fandom has changed since those times.

I think it was around 2016 when it started changing, though it went into acceleration around 2020. I think its both the fact that the fandom has changed and I have not. Even as a fae spirit that can change form at will, even when that change is just to allow nature to experience itself through me subjectively... There is still a core me that needs something that the furry fandom stopped providing.

The furry fandom used to be a "safe space" for me to "be a fox in." For me to talk about being a fox, about fox mindsets and fox experience, to give me a few days out of the year where I can stop pretending to be human. For me it was a way to express a part of myself and part of my fundamental spirituality. Even if they called me a sparkledog (I was probably the one the term was coined for, tbh) at least I could own it. If fae nature offended them and they had to give it a label, so be it. At least no one stopped me from being.

But as I said, things have changed. And I think it has alot to do with the "attention economy". Identity has become monetizable. And when that happens, people stop doing things to get in touch with themselves, and start catering to what is popular. And conventions have moved towards catering to that crowd. I've seen a number of cons moving towards placing special interest and promotion of popufurs and furry content creators and the fandom itself becoming ...

I think we've moved into a phase of the furry fandom monetizing itself, and that some people are getting fursuits not because they identify with it but instead for how appealing the concept will be to others. And the furry fandom has only ever been a place for me for as long as I belonged in it. It feels like the fandom is for popufurs now and for the people who are going to use furry as a space to generate content for wherever they are going to post and monetize their videos.

I've spent so long just creating, and giving, whether its been MUCKs or sites or writings or code or whatever, and I never had any expectations of it. I did it for the love of being a fox, and for the love of the space furry gave me tp be a fox, but now I feel like I, and others like me are forgotten, and that space no longer exists, and no one really cares if I am part of it or not.

And when it comes right down to it, I have always been otherkin and therian first. Being furry was a side effect of it, an interest I had, a space I had, because of what I am.

  4. I think i'm slipping away from being part of the furry fandom.
I think we as a system are. I'm not slipping away from being furry though. Let me explain.

Since we were around 7 was the first inkling of feelings that we were not human. By then we had three of us in here. But we would not discover there was anyone like us until around 1994 when we first got consistent access to an "internet" and were browsing newsgroups and discovered someone who said they were a dragon and described feelings like we had.

One exception was that while we were locked up at Charter Fairmount Institute (a mental hospital) in 1989, we met a unicorn there. I forget his name, we shared a room and he had white hair. I think I was 13 at the time. I'm not going to get into details about that but the doctors realized that we were getting close and were not good for whatever agenda of "wellness" they had for us and split us up roomwise, even though we still got to interact, but honestly, I thought that guy was a fluke... I had not realized there were communities out there...

Anyway, the point is, that it was around when I was 18-19 when I discovered the dragon community, which led me to the therian community... which eventually led me to the furry community.

During that time, the community was quite "identity focused". The therian community was elitist, insular, and the style of gatekeeping was narrow and openly hostile. You were expected to PROVE your therianthropy, to be able to explain the things that made you feel that way, but the furry community was more open and it was still a place where you could talk about your own animal feelings and experiences. The therian community openly hated the furry community in those days because of, what would now be described as "appropriating therian culture" even though those are the terms that would be used these days. (More ... this is gonna be a long one..)

The early therian community rejected me because, to be quite blunt, I have always been fae. Its basically in my blood and soul. They believed that I was not really a therian because I was not fully and only an animal, even though as a fox, my experiences absolutely paralleled theirs. So I gravitated towards the furry community because at that time, it was more accepting. I could constrain my identity to "just a fox" to be accepted by the early therians, but that imho would have been a lie not only to them, but to myself. I never thought it could be healthy for me to constrain what I am for the sake of acceptance.

I did not know the term "kitsune" back in those days. In the late 90s, I went around with 5 tails and butterfly wings. Honestly I thought that's just what I was, it was some other furry who asked me if I was a kitsune and I had to ask what that was, and once I got to searching "altavista" for that I got enlightened...

  5. Ooooohhhh. It's been a while since I've felt one of those.

Saw another derg posting about being a creature of the autumn and thought, "And I am a creature of the spring!"... And immediately got hit with the overwhelming feeling of moist earth and tender green grass between my claws, and the smell of petrichor carried along by the cool misty early springtime air.

Raaaaawrrrrrrwwwrrr I've missed this... *purrs contentedly* :dragnhappy: :dragnmeltlove:
