Para quienes gustan de las viejas tradiciones, hoy es literalmente el Día de Thor. La palabra actual en inglés, Thursday, proviene de una herencia directa del inglés antiguo bajo el vocablo Þūnresdæg, que se traduce tal cual como el día de Thunor o día del trueno, haciendo referencia directa a Thor, la deidad nórdica protectora de los hombres que dominaba las tormentas con su martillo. Cuando los pueblos germánicos adoptaron el antiguo calendario romano, hicieron una traducción exacta sustituyendo al dios del rayo original, que era Júpiter, por su propio defensor de los cielos, una costumbre lingüística que se quedó grabada en el tiempo y que todavía cargamos con nosotros cada que llega este día de la semana.

¿Sabían que el día jueves está dedicado enteramente a Thor y que por eso en varios idiomas europeos se le llama literalmente el día del trueno?
Cuando revisamos el origen de los días de la semana, nos topamos con una historia fascinante de cómo los antiguos pueblos germánicos y nórdicos adaptaron el calendario romano a sus propios dioses y mitologías. Los romanos llamaban a este cuarto día de la semana el día de Júpiter, en honor a su dios del cielo y del rayo. Alrededor del siglo III de nuestra era, cuando los pueblos del norte adoptaron este sistema, decidieron que el equivalente perfecto para esa deidad era Thor, el fuerte y noble dios pelirrojo que protegía a la humanidad con su martillo Mjölnir y gobernaba las tormentas. Fue así como la palabra se transformó en el inglés antiguo, dando origen al vocablo moderno que hoy conocemos como Thursday, que significa textualmente el día de Thor.
Esta herencia lingüística no se quedó atrapada en un solo rincón, sino que se extendió por gran parte del norte de Europa y se mantiene completamente viva en el vocabulario actual. Por ejemplo, si nos asomamos al idioma alemán, al jueves se le llama Donnerstag, una palabra que se traduce de forma directa como el día del trueno, haciendo una clara referencia al estruendo que causaba el carro de Thor al ser jalado por sus dos chivos a través del cielo nocturno. Lo mismo ocurre en lenguas como el sueco, el danés y el noruego, donde el día se nombra Torsdag, manteniendo el nombre del dios del trueno intacto y recordándonos que las viejas tradiciones paganas nunca desaparecieron del todo, sino que se camuflaron en nuestra forma diaria de medir el tiempo.
Resulta muy curioso ver cómo mientras los idiomas que vienen del latín, como el español con la palabra jueves o el francés con jeudi, mantuvieron el homenaje al planeta y al dios romano Júpiter, el norte prefirió quedarse con el guardián de Midgard. Si lo analizamos, usar el calendario actual es como hacer un viaje arqueológico a través del lenguaje, donde un simple jueves se convierte en el pretexto ideal para recordar las historias de barcos vikingos, mitos antiguos y el respeto que nuestros antepasados le tenían a las fuerzas de la naturaleza.

Security Week 2636: атака GPUThor обходит защиту ECC
Исследователи из канадского Университета Торонто на прошлой неделе опубликовали научную работу , в которой продемонстрировали новую атаку на видеоускорители NVIDIA. Атака, получившая название GPUThor, относится к классу Rowhammer, то есть использует многократные обращения к ячейкам оперативной памяти с целью повлиять на соседние ячейки. Таким образом можно изменить данные в областях памяти, изначально недоступных потенциальному злоумышленнику. Наиболее актуален такой сценарий атаки в случае совместного доступа к профессиональному видеоускорителю. Именно поэтому в подобных работах традиционно исследуются устройства NVIDIA, в данном случае модели поколения Ampere A4000, A4500, A5000 и A6000. По сравнению с предыдущими атаками на подобные устройства, продемонстрированными в начале 2026 года, GPUThor обеспечивает изменение данных в целевых ячейках в сотни и даже тысячи раз чаще. Но самое главное — новая атака в некоторых случаях приводит к двойным и тройным бит-флипам, которые не корректируются системой ECC. Это точно позволяет провести атаку типа «отказ в обслуживании» и теоретически создает условия для атаки с повышением привилегий, даже если коррекция ошибок включена.

I am an Epicurean agnostic deist.
Which sounds terribly complicated, but is actually quite simple.
I don't know whether there is a God, or several. Maybe there is. Maybe there isn't. I don't really know, and (this is the important bit) I don't particularly feel the need to know.
The universe is under no obligation to explain itself to me, and I am under no obligation to invent certainty where none is available.
But if there is a creator, I imagine them rather like an author who finished an enormous, complicated, occasionally beautiful manuscript, put down their pen, and walked away.
The work continues. The characters are on their own. The author is not popping back in every five minutes to rearrange the furniture, punish someone for wearing the wrong trousers, or decide which football team deserves divine favour.
And the Epicurean part?
That may be the most important bit of all.
I don't believe in living in fear. Not of gods. Not of death. Not of punishment. Not of some cosmic headteacher waiting to tell me I've been very naughty indeed. Been there, done that, minus the cosmic part. ;)
I believe in tranquillity. Friendship. Love. Thinking carefully. Being kind. Causing as little unnecessary suffering as possible.
And pleasure. Not endless excess, but the quiet, genuine pleasures of being alive.
Good food. Good coffee. Good conversation. People you love. A comfortable place to sit. A long walk. An afternoon in a park beneath old trees, watching the world happen around you.
And cats.
Obviously, cats are divine.
Perhaps Thor exists. Perhaps Bastet exists. Perhaps they are both busy. Perhaps neither exists in the way people imagine gods exist.
But when a cat climbs onto my lap, looks at me with ancient and absolute authority, and demands worship in the form of snacks, I feel that the theological evidence is at least worth considering.
So there you have it.
I don't know.
Maybe.
The creator, if there was one, has probably walked away from their work.
And in the meantime, I intend to love my friends, sit in parks, drink cocktails, pet cats, think deeply, be occasionally mischievous, and enjoy this strange little bit of existence while I've got it.
That seems quite enough theology for one lifetime. 💜🌳🐈✨
