    Monster House (2006)

Yeah, my film tastes are very eclectic, but this is a smartly written and fun little animated haunted house film.

    Zee: What is your problem?

DJ: Uh... puberty! Yeah, I'm having lots and lots of puberty.

  3. Stronghold (Preview)

I'm releasing this in a couple of days for real now. I got sidetracked last time with setting up my email list, but now I have very little work left to do on that, so I can focus more on putting out great music.

  4. Mike McCarthy thought Patrick Queen had a good week: “I thought PQ had an excellent week. And frankly, we cut him loose on some pressures early, activated him, and gave him a little more ownership in exactly what we’re doing in the play-caller meetings, and the things that are going on. So yeah, you definitely see growth.” #Steelers #NFL

  5. New blog post: blog.mei-home.net/posts/bahn-2

This one is about this weekend's Deutsche Bahn journeys. Mostly me grumbling a bit, plus a little rant about German mobile broadband ISPs.

  7. This is our life in Gaza.💔 We are suffering from hunger while food prices have become unbelievably high. My elderly mother has to cook over an open fire, and all we have to eat is a little lentil soup.
How much longer can we endure this? We are hungry, exhausted, and struggling to survive. Help us put food on our table before it's too late.

Not quite finished yet, but I'm happy with my little animation effect.

  9. 💔 Why is no one seeing our suffering?
Everything in Gaza is so expensive. I can no longer afford food for my children or milk for my little baby girl. 😭
Please, don't ignore our suffering. Help me, even with a little. My children need you. 🙏💔

  10. Treetop Watcher

I spotted this bird high in the top of a distant tree while on safari in my backyard yesterday (25 October 2026). The species is a little difficult to make out from this angle, especially with the bird partially obscured by the branches. Still, there is something familiar about its posture that practically screams "woodpecker." I'm fairly certain it's a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), a species that managed to elude me all last year.

  11. And that sucks.

We're doing atomic structure now which has some really cool empirical science. But it isn't much of the content overall. I need to cut some of the extra reinforcement material I was going to do and focus a little more on things like electron configuration and describing atoms rather than _why_ we know this stuff.

    Oh well. Live and learn.

  12. Review - Tigress, by Jessica Mookherjee: I quite enjoyed this one, the little snippets where it mentioned familiar things (she grew up in Wales I think), and her style. Rating: 3/5 ("liked it").

  13. "Give a man a gun and he can rob a bank, but give a man a bank, and he can rob the world."

It's a bit of a silly expression, actually. A little reductive, but still I like it, for the same reason most people hate it, because to me it means that power belongs to the people that take it. Nothing to do with their hard work, strong ambitions, or rightful qualifications, no. The actual will to take is often the only thing that's necessary.

  15. you know I've been looking at passive repeaters

a funny thing about Microflect is that they were really inconsistent about branding. Some of the older ones had a bigger Microflect logo on the front, some just have a little badge like this on a leg, some have nothing at all. I suppose when you enjoy an almost complete monopoly there isn't much need.

  16. Jaylen Warren says the Steelers can’t wait to play the Browns again at home: “It's massive. I believe we have a bye week after that, too. It's massive because we're going into it with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder based on how the last matchup went. We can't wait for the opportunity.” #Steelers #NFL

  17. “Boulder, Stream, Autumn Trees” — Autumn aspen trees line a Sierra stream interrupted by a boulder.

I have stopped to look at and sometimes photograph this little stream for a couple of decades. It lies along a road in the Eastern Sierra Nevada where I often photograph fall color and occasionally go to access backcountry trailheads. At the right moment of the day and season, it is surrounded by very colorful aspen trees.

  19. Always the citrine… Weekly Recap 10/26/2026

Whenever we go on a trip, I always keep a small piece of citrine in my pocket.

Why? I mean, is that tiny little stone really radiating some sort of protective energy?

    Yes. Of course it is!

And it hasn’t failed me yet, so I’m going to keep doing it.

Daily writing prompt What’s one piece of travel advice you always follow? View all responses

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

Exciting news for this week: I got my edited manuscript back!

I have about two weeks to go through it, accept/reject changes, and perform rewrites as necessary. And with a mere 4000 edits and 92 comments to address in the document, I’m sure I’ll just breeze through it.

If that sounds like a lot of work, it’s because it is; however… it’s less than my last book. And with my last book, I only had a few days to deal with it.

So yes, yet another thing that’s going to become a black hole for my time, but at least this one is fairly short-lived.

Have you guys seen the new black cat drink at starbucks?

It was terrible. Tasted like someone blended a Little Debbie Swiss Roll in a glass of water—and in a bad way… because I kind of like swiss rolls. I guess the chocolate cat ears were kind of cute.

On Friday night, we had an early Samhain circle.

And on Saturday, we did a very important thing. Selene and I voted.

Did y’all go vote yet? If not, go do it.

We also went out for sushi.

I’ve got an early release episode up on Patreon featuring Jamie Waggoner and an awesome conversation about Hades.

In other news, we’ve been watching the latest season of American Horror Story (13) and I have to say it’s a disjointed, incoherent mess. Still gonna finish it, though. I think I’ll be glad when it’s over.

That’s all for now, friends! Stay tuned for more soon.

  20. We’re coming up fast on Halloween so let’s talk about the Batman Effect. If you’ve ever put on a costume, you may have noticed that you act a little differently in it. What does the research say?

    Batman Effect part 1:

Imagine a six-year-old sitting in front of a laptop, doing the most boring task a team of researchers could design. Right beside the laptop is an iPad with a game on it, and the child has been told they can play it whenever they like. Every minute, a recorded voice asks whether they’re working hard.

Now give that child a Batman cape and change the question to “Is Batman working hard?”

That’s the setup of a 2017 study that gave us the name “the Batman effect”.1 Researchers asked 180 four and six year olds to stick with a dull task for ten minutes while that iPad sat there tempting them. Some kids were asked about themselves (“Am I working hard?”). Some were asked about themselves by name, in the third person. The rest picked a character, were given a prop to match, and were asked about the character instead.

The kids who were Batman (or Rapunzel, or Dora, or Bob the Builder) stayed on task longer than either of the other groups. Some of them even answered the recorded voice out loud with “Batman is working hard”, and if they’d wandered off to the iPad, they went back to work.

    So what’s going on?

  22. CW: Amiga related AI rant

Seeing the #Amiga scene flooded with content and AI-generated software breaks my heart and, to be honest, it even bothers me a little... I've read of people using AI to produce demos... Really? It's like running with a human using robotic legs, and the legs have been created stealing thousand of legs to other people...

Consider that this full-suspension e-MTB has a full carbon frame, a punchy Avinox M2 motor & possibly now market-leading software attached, as well as electronic shifting, plus some quality finishing kit & it's a head-scratcher how they've achieved the price.

What I want: secure by default, little devops, everything in OpenTofu/IaC, affordable for projects that might get 0 users or 100k. Managed Postgres is a must, I am done running my own.
