  1. Happy Sunday, #BSDCafe
    Happy Sunday, #illumosCafe
    Happy Sunday, #Fediverse

    I'm dismantling a small Kubernetes cluster and converting everything into FreeBSD jails. From 3 VMs to 1 smaller one, better performance, easier maintenance.

    Do we really need a truck to carry a single pizza?

  3. Announcing the BSD Cafe Billboard

    Today, we're introducing three things. The first one is a forum. A real forum - with categories, threads, and actual conversations that don't disappear in a timeline after six minutes. The second is a Fediverse platform. Fully federated, ActivityPub-native. Your posts go out, the world's posts come in. No walled gardens, no algorithms, no tricks. The third is a Bar. A place to sit down, talk to strangers who happen to care about the same weird things you do, and stay as long as you […]

  4. EDIT: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/116

    There are some workers at the BSD Cafe today.

    They say it's just a small renovation, but I definitely saw something new behind that curtain. ☕👷‍♂️

    Stay Tuned!

  5. I’m Just the Barista

    The spirit of the BSD Cafe is to try to create a serene, open, friendly, positive, and welcoming environment for all who want to be a part of it.
    I am just the Barista.
    I can't solve the world's problems, but I can try to keep the counter clean, keep the machines running, serve a good BSD coffee, and ensure that, at least here, friends can find a moment of peace and constructive sharing.

    We need more bars and fewer shopping malls.

  7. Dear friends of the #BSDCafe and the entire community,

    Unfortunately, sometimes things in life do not go as planned. Becoming an adult also means learning to accept this and to set priorities. Over the past few months I have had some family matters that required my attention. I waited as long as possible before making a final decision, but the moment has now come.

    I have informed the BSDCan team that, sadly, I will have to withdraw from the event and will not be able to present my talk.

    BSD conferences have become some of the most important events of the year for me. They bring joy, positivity, and motivation. When one ends, I already start looking forward to the next with enthusiasm. In Zagreb I said goodbye to everyone with "see you in Ottawa". This year, unfortunately, that will not happen.

    The only consolation is that the situation fortunately seems to be moving toward a resolution, although more slowly than expected. Because of this, I cannot in good conscience keep things uncertain and hope that everything will work out in time. I need to take a step back for now, already feeling the enthusiasm for the next EuroBSDCon.

  8. Dear friends of #BSDCafe - the BSD Cafe Journal needs some attention.

    This isn't the best time for me to revive it myself, and that's exactly why I'm counting on you!

    I'm sure you have great ideas, thoughts, projects, and articles that would fit perfectly in that space.

    So don’t be shy 🙂
    The BSD Cafe Journal is waiting for you!

  9. My friends, I'm so excited and happy to introduce a new project: the illumos Cafe!

    The positive and constructive spirit of the BSD Cafe, created and maintained by all the friends who participated from day one in building a strong and friendly community, deserves to spread to other operating systems. Because there are other OSes that deserve attention, certainly more than they're getting right now.

    Operating systems based on illumos (like SmartOS, OmniOS, Tribblix, OpenIndiana, etc.) are mature, stable, secure, and perfectly usable for a wide range of tasks. ZFS is native, zones are an excellent method for containerization, and bhyve and kvm coexist beautifully - and so much more, too much to list in a single post.

    So from today, the illumos Cafe will stand alongside the BSD Cafe in creating a positive, respectful, and growth-oriented (but also relaxing!) environment, starting right here in the Fediverse with a Mastodon instance and a snac one.

    I've written an introductory article about the project, including some technical details. I invite everyone interested to read it: it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18

    Choose your table, take a seat and enjoy your time at the illumos Cafe!

  10. Hi everyone at BSD Cafe,
    I’d like to start by thanking everyone for being part of this community - your presence and support truly mean a lot!
    This message will appear across all my BSD Cafe social accounts, as I’d like to make sure it reaches everyone. Apologies for the duplication, but I genuinely believe it’s important.

    Lately, there have been some discussions and questions surrounding content moderation on our instance, and I wanted to take a moment to offer some clarity and reaffirm the spirit of our community.

    As you know, BSD Cafe was founded as a space primarily focused on technology, with a special place for *BSD and open source. More importantly, though, I want it to be a positive, welcoming, and constructive place for everyone. Our community guidelines, especially principles like "Promote Positivity" and "Be Kind", are central to this vision.
    I've seen questions arise, sometimes involving accusations of political censorship from different perspectives, regarding why certain posts might be moderated. I want to be very clear on this: My moderation approach focuses primarily on the tone and manner of communication, not the specific topic itself.
    I don't intervene simply because a post discusses politics, a particular tech company, or any potentially divisive subject. I do step in when a post, regardless of the topic or the viewpoint being expressed, adopts a tone that is:
    * Provocative or intentionally confrontational.
    * Aggressive or disrespectful towards other users or groups.
    * Overly negative without constructive intent.
    * Contrary to our core principles of kindness and mutual respect.
    This standard applies equally to everyone and every "side". If someone were to post something like "Users of X software are idiots", I would address that just as readily as any other topic presented in a hostile way, even if I personally dislike software X.
    The goal isn't to "censor" opinions, but to preserve an environment where discussions, even critical ones, can happen civilly and respectfully, without descending into flame wars or personal attacks. We aim to be a space that is pro-constructive dialogue and pro-positivity, not anti-anyone.
    BSD Cafe is our shared digital home. Let's continue working together to keep it a pleasant and rewarding place where we can share ideas, learn, and connect over our shared passions (tech and beyond!), feeling comfortable and respected.

    Thank you sincerely for your understanding and for everything you contribute to making BSD Cafe a special community!
    Let's keep building this positive space together.

  13. Dear friends of the #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse,
    Bytedance is connecting to our server every few seconds. As I don't understand why and, more, I've already had problems with their rude behaviour, I've added this rule to nginx.conf:

    # case sensitive matching
    if ($http_user_agent ~ (Bytespider)) {
    return 444;
    }

    # case insensitive matching
    if ($http_user_agent ~* (bytespider)) {
    return 444;
    }

    They should be out, at least for now.

  14. Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the wider #Fediverse, the time has come: you can now sign up and contribute to the wiki! 📝

    My hope is that it will evolve into a go-to resource filled with a wealth of information on our favorite BSDs, including guides, walkthroughs, and more. It aims to compile the myriad of articles and information currently scattered across blogs, how-tos, and videos.
    As previously announced, we are using DokuWiki. I've set the main pages to read-only and established macro-categories: Reviews, Tutorials, and Users. The first two categories are further divided into subcategories (DokuWiki namespaces), one for each BSD. Additionally, every user has their own private namespace (to create articles, take notes, etc.) and a public page to add a personal introduction or whatever they wish.
    Registration is open, but I ask for your assistance in content moderation since these "open" wikis can sometimes attract trolls and defacers.

    I hope the Wiki will become a useful, powerful reference tool for many of us. I'll also soon create a page about the BSD Cafe project, detailing our goals, vision, etc.

    We're waiting for you: wiki.bsd.cafe

    As always, let me know (@stefano) your thoughts and how we can improve. I've already got two more steps in mind for additional services but still need to ponder over them... stay tuned!

  15. Dear friends of #BSDCafe, to improve the performance of the Wiki (wiki.bsd.cafe, currently not very active) and Element (element.bsd.cafe), I've activated a CDN to better distribute the content.

    Everything seems more responsive now, especially since Element is static, and the Wiki, for now, can almost be considered static.
