  1. Upward Gaze

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is gazing upward—perhaps eyeing a better spot. I believe it’s a young male, marked by the faint beginnings of a red throat patch beneath the beak. And true to its name, the yellow belly is clearly visible.

  2. Why You Yellow Belly ...

This morning, a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) made an appearance. I believe he might be a young male—his forehead crest and throat patch just beginning to blush red, like ceremonial markings in early bloom

  3. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

It wasn’t until post production that I noticed there is a humming bird flitting about on the left side of the frame in the background. Neat.

  7. Woodland Sapsucker

Here is an image of a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius).

"On a walk through the forest you might spot rows of shallow holes in tree bark. In the East, this is the work of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, an enterprising woodpecker that laps up the leaking sap and any trapped insects with its specialized, brush-tipped tongue. Attired sharply in barred black-and-white, with a red cap and (in males) throat, they sit still on tree trunks for long intervals while feeding. To find one, listen for their loud mewing calls or stuttered drumming." - allaboutbirds.org

  9. Some Disappointment Here

This is a juvenile yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), I came up on the bird during my morning walk with Ben and Charlie. I should have been able to get a better image, but c'est la vie. I approached the tree, trying to get an angle on the woodpecker, but the darn bird kept moving the opposite side of the tree. Most of the photos that I did get were the back of the bird, The woodpecker blends quite well with the tree.

  15. Song of the Sapsucker

“Nature’s Drummer: The yellow-bellied sapsucker strikes a harmonious pose amidst the forest green.” - Copilot

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) stopped by one day weeks ago. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him since.

As I've mentioned, I have a gallery of my favorite photos at: swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

Go there and take a look. Prints are for sale along with other doodads and I suppose it is kind of a business for me. But it's the kind of business where I don't care whether I sale anything or not. If you want something, by all means you are welcome to make a purchase. But I just want you to visit and maybe mark your favorites or leave a comment. Cheers 😄

  16. Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker - a favorite bird since I was introduced to them by Calvin & Hobbes, years before moving to the USA. These were a frequent visitor to the park near our old apartment, but I hadn't seen one since we moved to our new home, and I was thinking I might not see one at all this winter. So glad to have seen this one today. #YellowBelliedSapsucker #Birds

  17. Sunlit Sapsucker

Here is a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) that visited a while back.

"Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers aren’t regular bird feeder visitors, although they may visit suet feeders. And if you have young birch or maple trees in your yard and you live in the sapsucker’s range, you just might get to see one drilling its sap wells firsthand." - allaboutbirds.org

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

  19. Avoiding spoilers, but here to report that in #Echo the #YellowBelliedSapsucker has #zygodactyl toes, gives #sapsucker calls, and does #sapsucker drumming cadence. Well done! No, it shouldn't be anywhere near #Choctaw lands during the growing season, but that's okay.

  20. Upward Gaze

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is looking up, perhaps he sees a better spot. I think this is a young male because there are the beginnings of a red spot under his beak. You can clearly see why it is called yellow bellied.

"The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is the only woodpecker in eastern North America that is completely migratory. Although a few individuals remain throughout much of the winter in the southern part of the breeding range, most head farther south, going as far south as Panama. Females tend to migrate farther south than do males." - allaboutbirds.org

  21. What is yellow belly sap? 😆

This is a Yellow-bellied Sap Sucker (Sphyrapicus varius).

"The sapwells made by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers attract hummingbirds, which also feed off the sap flowing from the tree. In some parts of Canada, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds rely so much on sapwells that they time their spring migration with the arrival of sapsuckers. Other birds as well as bats and porcupines also visit sapsucker sapwells." - allaboutybirds.org

  22. Why you yellow belly ...

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) was around this morning. I think that this might be a young male and the crest on his forehead and the spot on his throat is starting to turn red.

"On a walk through the forest you might spot rows of shallow holes in tree bark. In the East, this is the work of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, an enterprising woodpecker that laps up the leaking sap and any trapped insects with its specialized, brush-tipped tongue. Here's a yellow-bellied sapsucker that was in an oak tree last spring.
