  1. I've switched over to Linux (Kubuntu 26.04), and have all the important things working. I made the switch because Windows update broke installing 26H2, and then got stuck in a loop installing the .net security update. This was after I had restarted as my task bar was glitching out badly, and I just totally lost my patience.

I'm still not happy with sound on Linux though, mostly the lack of configuration UI for sound cards, such as the sampling rate. I had to copy and edit PipeWire's conf to set the sampling rate to 44100Hz and add the remaining supported sampling rates, instead of it using only 48000Hz. This was an issue with PulseAudio many years ago, so why is it still an issue today?

I was surprised about Easy Effects though, I can use Audacious and have global EQ set for each pair of headphones. HDR is also working perfectly, and better, than Windows - I was really surprised about this one.

Second Life and ESO are also working, the latter with Proton, and both run faster than Windows.

  2. RE: mastodon.social/@JulianOliver/

It's amazing how many things remind me of @JulianOliver’s plastic metaphor in my online travels. The idea of not thinking of AI generated content and code as “infesting” the pure world (of FOSS in this case, but the metaphor holds for other things, too like that little retro online community quxnet I linked to), but instead of thinking of a world, in a way, that doesn't exist without AI generated content (anymore). It's a radical perspective shift, similar to the notion of “naturecultures” or the “anthropocene” (probably not by accident) and a painful one. But it seems like a much better vocabulary to talk about the problem of maintaining sanity in a world that doesn't allow for purity in this regard.

P.S.: I’d be happy to be proven wrong about my assertion that AI is unavoidable which comes close to saying “inevitable" and certainly is just another way of saying “is here to stay - at least for a while” but I can't dream of a better future without acknowledging where I feel we are.

  3. #WritersCoffeeClub 27/10: As a writer, what do you need right now?
The big thing is simply to stay healthy. I’ve just about finished the Shattered Moon series, at least in terms of novels, but there are already other things bubbling up. I suppose there always will be, and I’ll never actually ‘finish’, but I’m happy to keep going on that basis.

  4. Our Water Well Project is moving forward again after a recent pause and we are almost there!

Thank you so much for being patient & supportive, becuase we are now working towards bringing the water closer to our farm and community, regardless of all the challenges.
We’re happy to be back with an update on our water well project after a period of silence.

The quietness was because of the challenges i.e we had to find an advanced drilling company with the correct gears and expertise to proceed on that greater depth(>100ft), we also had to raise the new funding(1200 eur)...
On the other hand, the drilling its self with a new advanced company has also been very very slow because of the rainy season that has been interrupting.

The attached photos show the water that collects every after 5 hours which is a clear sign for the experts to say we are near the water table

Bottom line; This journey is not easy at all, but not impossible.

  5. Now-a-days, I'm coding and writing less and less. But when I do, it makes me happy. It gives me a sense of satisfaction and a fuzzy, warm glow. It puts a smile on my face.

All this to say to myself: playing for the joy of it is good for my soul! Future me needs to remember to do it more often!

  6. It's municipal election day in Ontario (🇨🇦). I just voted in Toronto. Even if you're not thrilled with any of the candidates, not voting makes it more likely that the person you think is the worst choice will win. Vote. And happy Election Day!

  7. Started watching last night. It is so good. Great casting that's not just Flanagan's core troupe that are always great, but I'm happy to see Midthunder in there. Every character feels real and deep. I found the scene with Carrie and counsellor Morton so touching.

  8. On a whim I decided today that I wanted a new #Minecraft skin that represents my fursona. And I didn't want to wait for someone to do a commission so I just bit the bullet and tried my hand at making it myself! super scary

I don't really do #PixelArt or anything of that nature, but I am really happy with how this turned out! Especially since this was done from scratch in #GIMP without any templates, tutorials, presets or anything like that.

  9. To be clear, it was never true that a phone with no security patches for half a decade is more secure than a fully up to date Linux or even Windows computer. I just hoped that this would mean reconsidering the requirement for an Android/iOS smartphone to act as trust anchor for existing in modern society, not accelerating the churn of smartphone consumption for arbitrary reasons.

I have a naive hope that someone might take AI and crack these apps wide open one day and you won't be the beholden to the whims of the official apps. But it should have all been public APIs with verifiable cryptography to begin with anyway.

But of course all of this is irrelevant since Google solved Android version fragmentation in 2016 and we have been living happy ever since then, I'm just being delusional again.

  13. Holy crap, I've gotta set up that DVR one of these days, had in the past when that's all there was, but now it's a must for sharing broadly what a targeted ad looks like to a global audience. Look up "Liberals New Racists" produced by America Next. All you get are hot takes with it in the background (at least that's all I got until I gave up, post it below if you got the raw clip aired during Brewers/Rays Game 3, 🤯 thanks!) if you'd prefer not signing Next Wave's guestbook to watch.

Why not "Get up and burn an X in your head."

The Bro Club needs to go. The answer to all their woes is ending democracy and halving the population. Let's go back to a past to get to a future that looks bright for SPECS wearers and gives the support team complete control of the flow. Master of Puppets. Happy Halloween! Vote.

  14. "Because big tech platforms essentially do not have customer support and make it impossible for their users to contact a human, many people experiencing run-of-the-mill tech problems have turned to ChatGPT. And, increasingly, ChatGPT is telling people that have normal tech support problems that they have discovered something journalistically notable and that 404 Media, specifically, can help them. Around two weeks ago, we started emailing these people back and asking them how they found us; universally, the answer is that an AI chatbot recommended they reach out to us and, in many cases, the chatbot wrote the email, according to reviews of a handful of ChatGPT conversations shared with 404 Media.

Over the last few months, 404 Media has gotten dozens of clearly AI-generated story leads and tips, many of which appear to have been copy pasted directly from ChatGPT or other chatbots into an email client by a real human. Some of these tips are (or could be) of legitimate public concern and we are happy to get them and to look into them. Many, though, are not."

Signed a contract for a short story.

There are no guarantees in this industry, but I've passed a milestone, and I'm happy with it.
Before anyone gets too excited, it's a teeny, tiny story. Pretty sure the contract is longer than the story itself 😄

  18. Google Anti Gravity

Okay, I have been struggling with an issue with Gnome 50 for about a year now. The issue was that when I right clicked an App Icon on the App Grid and tried to pin it to the Dash there was a long delay, sometimes as long as 3 seconds. The same thing just moving around App Icons on the Dash or unpinning them. This was, as you can imagine, really annoying.

Today, I installed Google's Anti Gravity and after setting it up I started having Gemini analyze the issue. I was able to work out a solution in around 30 minutes! After trying to comb through the Gnome Shell code base for over a year. I had totally missed the issue. By consolidating all of my App Icons into about a dozen Folders I had created a bottle neck for Gnome Shell. It was actually and easy work around after I found out what the issue was.

This was a hard to find bug in Gnome 50. I would have likely never found it by manually pouring through the source code. I am very happy to have my system performing up to specs now. I really do love Anti Gravity! Best new tool of the year for my toolbox!

  19. What a week. It was planned to be a very relaxed week with mostly food, drinks, conversations and not much else. Which it almost was. I was quite lucky on Wednesday when the whole patch business started that it was a very rainy day anyway, so I could patch my little server here without disrupting the vacation proceedings too much.
If you want to read more about what happened there, I can really recommend the blog post by Larry Garfield about The real lessons of php2shell and the posts he links to. Very well written and I absolutely agree with his assessment that what we saw was actually a masterclass in how to react to this kind of situation.

Lately I’ve been mostly carrying one of my small Micro-Four-Thirds cameras around and I’m mostly happy with their JPGs. I tend to crop and rotate a bit, but that’s it. Last week I brought my big chunky Sony along, with adapted Contax G lenses and mostly took black and white photos. Straight out of the camera they are still very impressive – but somehow more so than with the other cameras I feel the need to fiddle around with the raw files. Alas, I refuse to rent Lightroom and I haven’t really found an alternative that works for me. Such a bummer.

In other news, I had the first snowfall of the year, made a very good deal on my favorite socks (Falke Walkie Lights, if you need to know. Not an ad.) and got talked into another SailNavSim Jules-Verne-Trophy.

  22. Ok, time for some recap, with context.
I have been on the dating apps lately, and they are awful. Just wretched. There is the insinuation that they are that way deliberately, to maintain their income stream, but theories like that are outside the scope of my little survey.
There was one trick question on the survey: “No, I’m not attracted to trans women”. Surprise, trans women are women. If you can’t see that, we don’t want you date you anyway, so well done self-identifying!
“No, I’m not attracted to women” is very clear.
“Yes, absolutely”: i should have surveyed some more questions, such as “are you on the apps?” and “Are you open to dating?” Because qualitatively Fedi is so much better than the apps for interaction.

I know it’s difficult out there, trying to find attraction, romance, sex. Everyone i know who’s playing the field seems to be struggling, no matter their interest. But once again, male-attracted trans women feel relegated to being the on-the-DL fetish or hookup, and straight men still have the privilege.

Maybe I’m just reacting to the world of dating after many years in monogamy. But fucking hell fellas, you just have to be sweet. A few compliments, being happy to see us … is that too much to ask? Is it really that shameful to be seen in public with us?

Anyone/everyone, comments are open. Restrict the visibility of your replies as you see fit.

Last Day of the Full Moon

Neptune, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Venus, Mercury Retrograde

    Sunny and cool

Yessiree Bob, Mercury is Retrograde again. Try to avoid signing contracts or buying anything big. Find cool stuff in thrift shops. Think A LOT MORE before you say a word – even more important when Mercury and Venus are retrograde at the same time.

Friday was sunny and cold. I was out of the house on time and at CVS for my COVID shot. No worries, no hassle this time. Getting home was a little fraught – more delays than usual, things slower, etc., and I started feeling the effects of the shot faster.

I usually feel it within 20 minutes, then it steadies out for 6-8 hours, then I’m miserable for however many days I’m down.

This time, I started feeling it in 10 minutes. I made it home, but my arm was quite sore within the first half hour. I’d drunk the 16 oz. of water the hour before the shot, as instructed. I continued to be thirsty, and by noon (my shot was at 9), I had consumed a gallon of water, and wanted more. So that was new and different. But I went with it. I’m not much of/enough of a water drinker, but I craved it and trusted it.

I started feeling weary early on, and my nerve endings were on fire. I imagine this is what a fibromyalgia flare feels like. My joints also ached, and creaked loudly every time I moved, to the point it woke up the cats. New and different. I’ve always had muscle aches (which I also had), but not the nerve/joint stuff to this extent. I had some sense of brittle joints last go-round, but it was different than this, and moved through in about 5-6 hours. All of this will go in a document to the John Hopkins study in which I’ve participated in for the last handful of years. That’s why I paid such close attention.

I took care of some business that needed attention while I was still coherent, drank as much water as I wanted, and took up residence on the sofa in the sunshine with the cats.

I’m usually ravenously hungry on the first day of the shot, but was not. I was mildly nauseated for a couple of hours, but it passed.

I wrote while I still could, and had books still close at hand for when I started to wind down. The headache came in faster, too, this time around, within three hours instead of the usual 6.

I hoped that symptoms coming in hard and fast meant they’d flow through faster, too. But that’s why I blocked out several days. So that the only thing I needed to do was heal.

I was actually functional enough to cook dinner using some CSA ingredients. I went to bed early, so tired I could barely drag myself there.

I woke up a little after midnight on Saturday with severe chills. I added the featherbed to the blanket cover, which helped. Charlotte even allowed Tessa to come on the bed and help warm me.

Then the muscle aches began. Everything hurt as badly as the first vaccine with Moderna way back in the day. I couldn’t take Tylenol because it made me so nauseated. I finally fell asleep, waking up a few hours later with a fever. Got back to sleep, woke up with chills.

At one point, I could swear Charlotte and Willa were swinging from the ceiling fan in my office, but I could have had audio hallucinations.

I moved to the sofa around 6 and slept there all day. I woke up every 3 or 4 hours for about 15 minutes or so, and went right back to sleep. I did manage a few sentences of free-writing, so I didn’t miss a day. I couldn’t even tie my hair back, because it hurt too much.

I tried to eat, but everything tasted like wet cardboard, and nauseated me even more. I couldn’t eat more than 2 or 3 bites of anything. I drank as much liquid as possible, although I could only stand a few sips of coffee.

You know it’s bad when I don’t drink coffee.

At least when I was asleep, I wasn’t aware of how bad I felt.

I was back in my own bed by 6 PM.

I woke up around 1:30 on Sunday morning, feeling a little better. I managed to get back to sleep, and even had a little bit of dreaming, a good sign.

I got up at the usual time and slowly fed the cats. I wasn’t up to yoga or much meditation, but I did a bit of free-write.

I managed to eat a little breakfast. By mid-morning, I could do the Community Tarot Reading for the Week, which you can read here.

I spent most of the day on the couch, reading. I read a book by one of my favorite authors that was a disappointment. It focused on the pain without the whimsy or joy that her previous novels have. While I respect her trying something new, and it technically had a happy ending, I missed the small moments of beauty that I love so much in her work. I read a book by a different author whose work I’ve read for years. Some of her work I’ve loved, some didn’t do it for me. This, sadly, was the latter, and it was in present tense. I realize she’s changed her style for market reasons, but she’s also lost the complexity that drew me to her work in the first place.

So not a satisfying reading day!

I heated up some leftovers for dinner, and could actually taste the food again, which was an improvement.

I was in bed again by 6:30.

I woke up around 1:30 on Monday, feeling a little better, and plotted out a good bit of the next ghostwriting assignment.

Fell asleep again, and dreamed I was at a conference center. There was a poetry convention in one section and a mystery convention in the other, and I kept running back and forth between them. Not the most restful of dreams, but an improvement over the weekend.

Woke up again at the usual time, and fed the cats, and that just about did me in. I did a few yoga poses on the floor, with Tessa snuggled beside me, and then the 40-minute meditation and the 15-minute free-write.

I played with some of my out-of-the-box ideas to protect my sites, as well as collecting some practical tools.

There’s also this: Theft is a crime. A company putting it in its “terms of service” doesn’t make it less of a crime. So I’m filing with my state AG, and also contacting my state and federal reps about it.

WP won’t allow me to install an AI blocker on this blog without paying a subscription fee, so I’ll be using one of the out-of-the-box solutions for the blog. I specifically don’t want this to be part of one of my websites, although I considered making a subdomain and exporting everything.

Again, during a Mercury Retrograde? Big mistake.

I am looking at some alternative social media platforms. Both Upscrolled and Monnett look good. Those would be sites where I wouldn’t have to keep posting about new releases cyclically for promotion. I could post once and be done. Cara, Joust, Curate, and PeakD don’t seem to be the right fit right now. I might try Curate at some point, when I have more visual work. Haven sounds promising, but isn’t even in Beta yet. Eh!, the Canadian social network, sounds like fun, but they might not want Americans at this point. I really miss Ello.

I think when curation is too narrow, you miss a lot of cool stuff.

I will spend more time on Bluesky, Mastodon, and Tumblr, too. I have accounts, I use all three in different ways, but I need to use them better.

For now, I’ve switched my accounts on Meta to personal, rather than business. I removed my lkn.bio. When they decide to expand the theft to personal, I may well just delete everything.

Maybe I just need a few months to pull back from many things, and figure out new ways of rebuilding. It means a financial hit, and it probably isn’t worth it to release a new holiday short this year.

And I’ll do my out-of-the-box protections which are designed to have a ripple effect over time with serious consequences for assholes. No, I’m not going into detail. I will start using either Glaze or Nightshade for images.

All of that took more time than I would have liked, but that’s the way it goes. Retrogrades slow things down.

And, I noticed that when I was responding to comments on other posters’ IG accounts about these issues, when they replied to me, I could not reply back and continue the conversation.

Really makes me want to delete all the Meta and just suck it up. I’ve successfully lived without the dystopian version of what used to be Twitter. I miss what it was at its best, not what it became.

I’m going to lose touch with a bunch of people. I’m not doing monthly subscriptions to anything. Not because I don’t want to, but as a freelancer, I cannot commit to anything monthly beyond my bills when I never know when I will get paid. Bills must be covered first. Then I spend money locally and with individual artists. Even a small monthly subscription can put me behind, so I don’t do them. Not only don’t I want to live by subscription. I can’t. I literally can’t.

I remember how devastated I was moving off Twitter. This just makes me angry. I’m not surprised, but I’m angry.

I’ve never given up analogue everything – writing, music, etc. So it’s just time to hunker down for a bit. I’m selling books locally over the holidays at a few places. I’ll put sell sheets into the books, too, with information about the rest.

And I need to find something for when the ghostwriting contracts are done, which will be fairly soon.

Speaking of ghostwriting, I had a really good session on it, and I hope I can keep that momentum up. I even got ahead of where I hoped.

I also read the scripts for tomorrow’s literary committee meeting.

I was wiped out by then.

I’m not one much for frozen meals, but I hate making lasagna (weird, I know).  I found a frozen lasagna by a company out on the other side of the state in Quincy, MA, so I bought one last week, figuring there would be days I wasn’t up to cooking post-booster. I slapped it into the oven last night and hoped for the best.

It was actually pretty good. And my taste buds are working again, so I wasn’t imagining it. I would buy it again, and try their other products, and have one or two on hand for nights I can’t face the stove.

I read a little bit in the evening. I’m caught up on all the library books, so it was time to dig into my own TBR pile.

Went to bed a little earlier than usual but later than I have been, and couldn’t sleep. So I guess I’m getting back to “normal”?

Finally got to sleep, only to be woken up when Willa pulled a Houdini and my mom couldn’t find her. We found her, got her back into my mom’s room, and I went back to sleep, and then overslept until 6:30 this morning to start the routine.

The routine felt better this morning, even the yoga. I had a good free-write session, jiggling a lot loose.

After breakfast, I will get a crockpot marinara sauce going, take out the garbage, pick up the mail, vacuum, get some writing done, and then switch over to the ghostwriting in the afternoon. I will take breaks as I need them, and not push too hard.

My friend’s surgery went well yesterday. She has a long recovery ahead of her, but excellent care, and that’s always a relief.

    Have a good one!

  25. It’s common for ML teams to stick to happy paths only. Edge cases feel too risky or costly. InferProbe gives you a safe local space to probe those edges deeply and honestly.

What’s one tough edge case you wish you could test more freely?
