Thanks to global warming, and the last technological revolution, the Arctic has cracked wide open. As a result, the EU is faced with being part of the East, or part of the New North West. However, if Canada joined the EU, and the UK made a formal apology and begged to come back, the Americans would have to decide whether it's better to join the EU or expect all those countries to become States. Since the States don't see eye to eye as it is, I wouldn't count on the latter being a viable option.

I truly wish there were simple solutions to the global mess everyone is in.
The article made great sense right up until: "With its democracy now explicitly under threat, Europe must join India, Brazil and China in standing up to Trump."
Now that Trump is cordoning off the western hemisphere from intercontinental shipping traffic, all roads lead through Europe for the Tiger rising in the East. There's a Lion, too, but that's another matter.
I'd be careful how close Europe buddies up to those that don't give two shits about democracy. They'll gladly hollow out any country with an influx of cheap goods to gain the upper hand once dependency sets in.
Brazil wants cheap "smart city" buildouts like every other country on the planet that doesn't have the means to quickly do it themselves.

Validation through shared opinion. Splitting hairs on swasticar bumper sticker verbiage or the mortality rates of diseases to justify their elimination with vaccines that are 99.9% effective in doing so, as if the goal for any nation shouldn't be zero child deaths due to communicable disease.
