  1. @wauz @econetwork "land used for producing coffee is not used for food" - this is only true in a monoculture, where you allow only one crop to grow in a given patch of land. The monoculture is the main part of what makes it colonial. European colonists had (and still have) an industrial mentality and were used to a forgiving, temperate climate where you can sometimes get away with a monoculture for decades, so they started monocultures everywhere they went. In most colonized areas, this displaced the more sustainable polyculture practices, often destroying fertility very quickly. This is still going on (for example in the huge oil palm plantations) and is the main cause of #desertification.

In polycultures, the cultivated patch of land can be designed to be self-sustaining in the same way as a natural ecosystem. That generally includes returning surplus to the land, for example by composting the cascara. In that sense, eating what you grow is not the only way to use the land sustainably.

Long story short, coffee is fine if you mix it with other crops. As you can read elsewhere in this thread, this is exactly what EYN is doing.

  3. RE: mas.to/@econetwork/11559996995

@econetwork Is a highly idealistic project founded by people who have very little of their own, but who still want to help others to improve their #foodSecurity, educate #futureGenerations, protect the #environment, fight #hiddenHunger and boost #biodiversity. Their activities breathe #permaculture. This type of #cooperative, small-scale, bottom-up initiative is exactly what we need, everywhere. #PleaseBoost and #donate to help them buy a small plot of land, so they can have a permanent base to operate from.

  5. Just imagine eating #organicfoods straight from your own garden. Today, I tasted our own potatoes, and honestly they were so delicious.

They are not fully ready for harvest yet, but at least no one in the @econetwork group can sleep hungry. We have a place to learn grow and always find something to eat.

Farmers truly enjoy organic foods hhhh 🥔

  6. Hi #Mastodon family some people have been asking why we don’t post the maize on our land hhh. So here it is, our maize field looks all green and healthy 😉.

And the funny part is 🌽😂 the maize we gave the least attention is now among the most developed around us. Harvest time is getting closer and we can’t wait to share with the community 😉

In #Africa maize are used to make posho, a common school meal. Fresh maize can also be roasted or boiled and tastes great 😉.

  7. Peter Mugabo, the new pumpkin farmer, proudly called some of us to visit the pumpkins he recently grew. They really looked nice and inspiring. So what do you think, fellow #farmers? Should we also grow pumpkins on our land...?

Can we plant them in between our banana plantations, and will that work well without affecting the bananas?

  8. @sandorspruit That is really powerful. We truly respect how the #Netherlands comes together on #rememberance Day (Netherlands) to honor those lives.

Taking time to pause and reflect like that really matters, especially today. It’s a strong reminder of the #value of #peace.

  10. We are excited to share what is growing on our land Though we recently planted new bananas, we already have some ready to eat fresh and truly ours 💪We also have maize (corn) a staple crop with golden kernels, great for food and flour, It is widely used by schools, and where its flour is cooked into posho, a common and filling meal. We are grateful for the rains still blessing our land as our bananas continue to grow strong.🍌 🌽 #FarmingLife #Gratitude #SustainableLiving #Harvest #Blessed #EYN

  11. As we step into the Easter vibes, we first had to focus on one important task making terraces on our land. The heavy waters from the surrounding hills have been washing away our fertile topsoil, which is vital for farming. We worked hard and succeeded. And seeing our bananas growing healthy and beautiful made us so happy it feels like they truly loved our land.💪

  12. This was the first exhibition we truly enjoyed, and it left a lasting impression on us. It was amazing to see both young and old people coming together in one place, sharing the same inspiring experience. The environment is so motivating it lifts your mind the moment you arrive and instantly boosts your thinking. Honestly, we fell in love with the beautiful gardens we found there in #Nakawa. #kampala #uganda

  15. Our latest update from the smallest plot shows healthy tomato plants growing well. During our last visit, we tried a new planting method using recycled sacks. We applied organic chicken and goat manure collected from a nearby farmer in Kayihura. The tomatoes are strong, green, and promising. For everyone who values fresh and organic food, you are welcome at EYN.

  16. A funny but powerful contradiction 🌳
A truck carrying cut trees, yet the message says “Plant More Trees.” It makes us smile but also think. Let this remind us: cutting without restoring harms our future. If we must use trees, let’s replace them, protect forests, and act responsibly. The joke becomes a lesson when we choose action over words.

  17. Groundnuts are a loved food in Africa. Many people enjoy them as soup eaten with matooke, rice, cassava, or posho. They can also be roasted, boiled, made into peanut butter, or used in snacks and cakes. Outside Africa, peanuts are used in sauces and desserts. In general, we have a lot to share and grow together. It is still in plan, but food truly changes lives and connects communities..itac-professional.com/en/blog/

  18. Mulching helps protect and improve soil by covering it with dry leaves, grass, or crop remains. It conserves moisture, prevents erosion, controls weeds, and adds organic nutrients as it decomposes. This simple method boosts crop yields and supports climate resilience... try to use it in your garden your will thank me later

  19. Hello Amos, our youngest and most innovative mind 🤗. I really liked what he said!!Since the big stove is within our plot, he said "we can use that space to place things and plant vegetables on it ".That’s creativity at its best turning every little space into something useful. Keep those ideas coming, we love them We also wish you the best in your studies as you are back at school 📚

  20. Today I’m in Nswazi where we are preparing to bring over 80 jackfruit trees once they are ready from our nursery beds. The community clearly needs trees for fruits, shade, improving soil, clean air, and fighting hidden hunger. I’m happy to have a new friend who has promised to support us with different tree and flower seeds. #HiddenHunger #EcoYouthsNetworkUganda #TreePlanting #CommunityImpact #SustainableFuture

  23. It’s me in the photo, 4 years ago in high school, where I was inspired to engage in sustainable projects, eco-services, and nature protection. We were driven to fight hidden hunger caused by malnutrition in our country. I wasn’t too young to see the struggles in and out of school. Growing up, I united like-minded people to create solutions for communities and the world. #SustainableProjects #HiddenHunger #Malnutrition #Nature

  27. Many kids in our community look unhealthy. We’re stepping in with love and action offering parental support and teaching families how to live sustainably. By giving them a taste of our eco-products, we offer real proof and testimony that change is possible. The future is uncertain we may fail, but we never fail to try.

  28. Dear friends, as #EcoYouthsNetworkUganda celebrates becoming an official NGO, we face a real challenge. The land we use for our #youthprojects is rented, and we’ve been asked to clear 4–5 months of rent. To continue our work on #HiddenHunger, #sustainablefarming, and #greeninitiatives, we must secure this space. Your support keeps our #climateaction and #foodsecurity efforts alive. Let’s keep growing together. 🌿💚
