    ***

    Panel:

    Dr. Eva Gengler will be joined by ethicist Dr. Eva Maria Hille and senior data scientist Rebekka Görge, with whom she will be discussing power, inequality, and responsibility in the development and use of AI.

  12. Pasting rough meeting notes into ChatGPT with "summarize this" usually gets you something that reads well and is hard to use. Action items are buried in paragraphs, owners and deadlines go missing, and occasionally the model fills a gap with something nobody said.

    The fix is to tell it what you want in four parts.

    TL;DR: state the task, the output format, the rules about what it may not add, and the length.

    The four parts

    1. Task: say what you want made.
      "Turn the meeting notes below into meeting minutes." Saying "minutes" instead of "summary" already changes the result, because minutes have a known structure.
    2. Format: name the sections.
      "Use three sections in this order: Decisions / Action items (owner, due date) / Next meeting. Put action items in a table." When the column names are fixed, you can copy the table straight into a tracker or a ticket.
    3. Constraints: stop it from inventing.
      "Don't add anything that isn't in the notes. If an owner or date is missing, write 'To confirm'." This one matters most. Without it, a model will often guess a plausible name or deadline to fill the table.
    4. Length: set a limit.
      "One line per decision, ten lines in total." Short minutes get read and forwarded; long ones don't.

    Copy-paste version

    Turn the meeting notes below into meeting minutes.
    Use these sections in order: Decisions / Action items (owner, due date) / Next meeting. Put action items in a table.
    Don't add anything that isn't in the notes. If an owner or date is missing, write "To confirm".
    One line per decision, ten lines in total.

    Notes:

    Paste your raw notes after "Notes:".

    Before you paste anything

    • Remove company details first. Replace names, amounts and client names with placeholders: "Person A", "XX dollars", "Company B".
    • Check the output against your notes before you send it to anyone. The constraint line reduces invented details; it doesn't guarantee there are none.
    • Follow your company's AI policy. If your organisation doesn't allow these tools, don't use them for work notes.

    We haven't included sample output here. AI answers change from run to run, so a screenshot of one answer wouldn't tell you much. The structure of the prompt is the part that carries over.

    If you're building this into a tool

    The same four parts map neatly onto a system prompt plus a structured output schema: format becomes the schema (an array of action items with owner and due fields), and "To confirm" becomes an allowed value instead of a free-text guess. That makes missing information visible in the data rather than hidden in prose.

  17. Cursebinder – Psychohazard Review By Grin Reaper

    In the Rush documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage,1 Jack Black describes musicians’ wells of creative juices as ‘rocket sauce.’ He notes that some musicians and bands only muster enough for one BIG album, while others seem to run on an endless supply.2 This description stuck with me through the years, and remains my go-to reference when someone gilds whatever they touch. Kraków vocalist Maciej Proficz is one such individual, and both his active projects Dormant Ordeal and Cursebinder run on vast reserves of rocket sauce while offering multifaceted interpretations of their respective genres. Dormant Ordeal’s Tooth and Nail landed at the #3 spot in last year’s Aggregated List; third album The Grand Scheme of Things received a glowing review from Dr. Wvrm and appeared on several 2021 end-of-year lists despite a late December release, and Cursebinder’s debut Drifting found itself atop Carcharodon’s Top Ten(ish) of 2023. Such accolades can’t guarantee future triumphs, but they can send expectations into the stratosphere—does Cursebinder’s sophomore album Psychohazard harness the rocket sauce to send us there?

    Though Cursebinder operates under the black metal umbrella, no single genre encapsulates Psychohazard’s breadth. In his write-up of Drifting, Carcharodon cites doom, death, and post-metal as descriptors for Cursebinder’s chameleonic character. Instead of using camouflage in a way that makes Psychohazard difficult to absorb or engage with, though, this Polish quartet employs it to disguise barriers between genres and inculcate an atmosphere both familiar and unique. Compared to Drifting, Psychohazard submits more direct applications of riffs (“Saturnine Rage,” “Prayers for the Living, Flowers for the Dead”) and synths (“Limits”), and where Drifting’s genre-hopping evinced distinct moods with thoughtful transitions, Psychohazard blurs lines together with subtler craft.3 Psychohazard’s first four tracks flow together in a sublime strand that ricochets between textured aggression (“Death Season”) and gentler grooves (“The Astronaut”), culminating in a rabid fusion that seethes with angst and catharsis (“Saturnine Rage”). Honestly, this track would make a resounding closer, and to use it at Psychohazard’s midpoint illustrates the puissance of Cursebinder’s surrounding material.

    Merging these sounds into a unified platter requires keen grace, and to then layer in the emotional depth that Cursebinder achieves is stunning. Cursebinder’s promo materials describe Psychohazard’s theme as a study in the collision of life’s ‘rat race’ and humanity’s inherent desire for love and acceptance. As the demands of my own life continue to creep,4 this idea strikes a chord that thrums with self-renewing relevance every day. “Death Season” bustles with vitriol and vigor as Proficz’s caustic vocals impel the track in a blinding tempest, while “The Astronaut” and “Under the Skin” float upon currents that relax and unwind one moment before boiling over into frenzied bursts the next. But even this is an oversimplification, as each track proves vibrant and diverse, refusing to condense into single emotions. Broadly, the back half of Psychohazard feels lighter than the front, putting more emphasis on dimensions that evoke post-metal’s vagrant dreaminess without losing the threads of riffs or motifs.

    Considering Cursebinder’s sprawling ambitions, Psychohazard sounds focused and urgent throughout its runtime. The post-addled haze never drifts too far, the scorching fury never burns too hot, and the tender flashes never linger long enough to caramelize into mawkishness. I credit this purposefulness to the efficient instrumentation that Cursebinder unfurls with nary a wasted flourish. Guitarist Hubert Fudała and bassist Łukasz Sojka wend together in climactic swells and releases that expertly pace the album’s fifty-three minutes,5 and Marek Koszycki drums with nuanced timekeeping that flits between punk-powered d-beats (“Saturnine Rage”), insistent blast beats (“Made to Be Sold”), and delicate rhythms (“The Astronaut”). Proficz’s synth presence penetrates Psychohazard’s compositions, and in totality Cursebinder rewards repeat listens as each musician’s contributions impress individually while coalescing into an assembly greater than its sum.

    Although post-related tags usually thwart my interest, something about Cursebinder’s spell called to me from beyond the ether. Psychohazard proves textures and layers can inculcate depth rather than acting as a standalone attraction, and going forward I hope to point to Cursebinder as my entry point into appreciating a wider expanse of metal. Cursebinder’s faults are few, and even if the record is slightly front-loaded or a few songs linger a tad overlong, these nitpicks pale in light of Psychohazard’s utter glory. If you seek an album that synthesizes the aura of post-metal with more conventional metal structures, I doubt you’ll find a better album this year. Barring that, you should listen to Cursebinder anyway, because missing it could be a Psychohazard to your health.

  21. They were stranded. The tsunami had just engulfed their craft, and having been tossed aside like so much flotsam, the engines were flooded.

    "Let it drain, Cooper. It'll need an hour," stated the flat voice of TARS from the centre console.

    "How much is this going to cost us, Brand?" demanded Cooper as he paced in agitation. Her reply, as she sat dejected on the floor: "A lot. Decades."

    "Wait," Cooper realised. "It's the last Sunday of October back on Earth. Is there any way we can, I don't know, change our clocks on the European schedule, gain back the years?"

    Amelia Brand stood and walked over to a side panel. "It could work. Let me edit the ship's timezone real quick..."

    A confirmatory beep sounded out from the panel. "Ok, we're now on London time. How're the engines looking, TARS?"

    "All clear, Dr Brand; we're good to go."

  22. “The Evil” (1978) – Review

    Hello again, my lovely Gorehounds and Horrorfiends,

    3FMC is here with you with more fun and laughs as we review horror films from yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Today, we decided to wait until the nice day was over, then it was pizza time, and some Horror to scare the mozzarella out of us. As we are drawing closer to the 31st, and All Hallow’s Eve, we have cranked up our Horror viewing by a factor of 5. If we had cranked it up to 10, we would not be going to work, and that would be a big problem. Anyways, we spun our Wheel of Death to see what it landed on…BTW, we made a cute little wheel that works like the Wheel of Fortune, that we spin to pick Horror films when we cant decide. It has the subclasses of:

    • Monster Movie (includes Vampires, Werewolves, Alien Creatures, Zombies, etc)
    • Haunted House
    • Slashers
    • Ghosts
    • Witches
    • Sci-Fi Horror

    It landed on “Haunted House” so we pulled one from the drawer that we haven’t reviewed on here yet. That would 1978’s The Evil, starring Richard Crenna, Joanna Pettet, and the late great, Victor Buono.

    Premise: A psychiatrist, Dr. Arnold (Crenna) purchases an abandoned mansion that he plans to turn into a drug rehab. He then has some friends come in and help him clean up the place to get it in order. Apparently, the house was previously owned by a Civil War General, who had the home built of some sort of hot springs. Then, when working in the basement, Dr. Arnold finds a trapdoor that he opens and unwittingly releases a nasty spirit which traps all of them in the house. Dr. Arnold later realizes that the trapdoor is actually a doorway to Hell (at least it wasn’t a well in the basement like another house located in Amityville).

    Discussion: Once the spirits are released from the basement, the body count starts to soar, and people are killed in some gruesome ways. All in all, this was a very effective, and in a lot of ways, underrated haunted house horror film. Strong performances from Crenna and Buono, set this one apart from many of the other Haunted House films of the genre. Buono’s portrayal of The Devil was particularly good, and frightening. We definitely think that this one is in the Top 5 best Haunted House films of the 1970s and 1980s. Not Poltergeist-level special effects, but definitely more psychological in nature, and an effective one at that. Give it a try.

    ” I feed on 3FMC Reviews, Mr. Arnold.”

    Rating: 4 doors to Hell out of 5.
    – 3FMC

    CREATE TABLE conversion_events (
    id BIGSERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
    event_id TEXT NOT NULL UNIQUE, -- tekilleştirme anahtarı
    event_name TEXT NOT NULL,
    lead_id BIGINT NOT NULL REFERENCES leads(id),
    occurred_at TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL, -- olayın gerçek zamanı
    value_minor BIGINT, -- kuruş/cent cinsinden
    currency CHAR(3),
    status TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT 'pending', -- pending, sent, failed, skipped
    attempts INT NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
    last_error TEXT,
    send_after TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT now() + interval '15 minutes'
    );

    send_after alanı, "yanlışlıkla kazanıldı" senaryosuna karşı küçük bir tampon. İşçi göndermeden önce fırsatın hâlâ aynı aşamada olup olmadığını kontrol eder; değilse kaydı skipped yapar.

    Kullanıcı verisini normalize etmek: Hash'ten önce gelen asıl iş

    CAPI, e-posta ve telefon gibi kişisel verilerin SHA-256 ile hash'lenmiş olarak gönderilmesini bekler. Çoğu ekip hashlib.sha256(email) yazıp işi bitmiş sayar. Sorun şu ki hash, girdideki tek bir boşluğu ya da büyük harfi tamamen farklı bir değere dönüştürür. Meta tarafındaki eşleşme de birebir karşılaştırmayla çalıştığı için normalizasyon hatası, sessizce düşük eşleşme oranı olarak geri döner.

    Benim sahada gördüğüm en yaygın hatalar:

    • E-postada baştaki/sondaki boşluklar ve büyük harfler.
    • Telefonun 0533 ..., +90 533 ..., 90533... gibi farklı biçimlerde saklanması.
    • İsimlerde Türkçe karakterlerin farklı yazımları ve "Dr." gibi önekler.
    • Boş alanların boş string olarak hash'lenmesi (boş string'in de bir SHA-256 değeri vardır ve anlamsız bir eşleşme anahtarı üretir).

    import hashlib
    import re
    import phonenumbers

    def _sha256(value: str) -> str:
    return hashlib.sha256(value.encode("utf-8")).hexdigest()

    def norm_email(raw: str | None) -> str | None:
    if not raw:
    return None
    v = raw.strip().lower()
    return v if "@" in v else None

    def norm_phone(raw: str | None, default_region: str = "TR") -> str | None:
    if not raw:
    return None
    try:
    num = phonenumbers.parse(raw, default_region)
    except phonenumbers.NumberParseException:
    return None
    if not phonenumbers.is_valid_number(num):
    return None
    # Ülke kodu dahil, yalnızca rakamlar, başta + yok
    return phonenumbers.format_number(num, phonenumbers.PhoneNumberFormat.E164).lstrip("+")

    def build_user_data(lead) -> dict:
    ud = {}
    if (e := norm_email(lead.email)):
    ud["em"] = [_sha256(e)]
    if (p := norm_phone(lead.phone, lead.country_code or "TR")):
    ud["ph"] = [_sha256(p)]
    if lead.external_id:
    ud["external_id"] = [_sha256(str(lead.external_id))]
    # Tarayıcıdan yakalandıysa hash'lenmeden gönderilen alanlar
    if lead.fbc:
    ud["fbc"] = lead.fbc
    if lead.fbp:
    ud["fbp"] = lead.fbp
    return ud

    Bir detay daha: Kıbrıs gibi çok uluslu alıcı kitlesi olan pazarlarda default_region sabit "TR" olamaz. İngiltere'den gelen bir lead'in 07... ile başlayan numarası Türkiye varsayımıyla ayrıştırılırsa geçersiz sayılır ya da daha kötüsü yanlış bir numara üretir. Bu yüzden formda ülke seçimini ayrı bir alan olarak tutmak, normalizasyonun doğruluğunu doğrudan etkiliyor.

    fbc, fbp ve external_id: Eşleşmeyi güçlendiren köprüler

    E-posta ve telefon tek başına çoğu zaman yeterli olur, ama iki alan eşleşme kalitesini belirgin biçimde artırır:

    • fbc: Reklam tıklamasıyla gelen fbclid parametresinden türetilen tıklama kimliği. Kullanıcı sitenize reklamla geldiyse _fbc çerezinde bulunur.
    • fbp: Pikselin tarayıcıya yazdığı _fbp çerezi.

    Bu değerler satış anında değil, lead oluştuğu anda yakalanmalı. Üç hafta sonra sözleşme imzalanırken kullanıcı tarayıcısında değil, satış ofisinde oturuyor. Bu nedenle form gönderiminde bu iki çerezi gizli alanlarla alıp lead kaydına yazmak, sonraki tüm offline olayların kalitesini belirliyor. Meta Lead Ads formlarından gelen lead'lerde ise platformun verdiği lead kimliğini saklamak aynı işi görür; CRM entegrasyonu senaryolarında bu kimliğin olayla birlikte gönderilmesi eşleşmeyi doğrudan kurar.

    external_id ise sizin CRM'deki kişi kimliğiniz. Hem piksel hem sunucu tarafında aynı değer (hash'lenmiş olarak) gönderilirse, aynı kişinin farklı olaylarını birbirine bağlamak kolaylaşır.

    event_id ile tekilleştirme: Aynı satışı iki kez saymamak

    CAPI'de iki ayrı tekrar riski vardır:

    1. Piksel ile sunucu çakışması: Lead olayını hem tarayıcı pikseli hem sunucu gönderiyorsa, iki olay aynı event_name ve aynı event_id ile gelmelidir. Meta bu ikiliyi tek olay olarak sayar.
    2. Yeniden deneme çakışması: Ağ zaman aşımı yüzünden isteğin ulaşıp ulaşmadığını bilmiyorsanız ve tekrar gönderirseniz, aynı event_id korunmalıdır.

    event_id rastgele üretilmemeli; olaydan deterministik olarak türetilmeli. Benim tercihim şu:

    def make_event_id(event_name: str, lead_id: int, stage_version: int) -> str:
    return f"{event_name.lower()}:{lead_id}:{stage_version}"

    stage_version, fırsatın o aşamaya kaçıncı kez girdiğini tutan bir sayaç. Böylece bir müşteri gerçekten ikinci bir daire satın alırsa yeni bir Purchase üretilir, ama aynı satış için yapılan iki gönderim aynı kimliği taşır. Veritabanındaki UNIQUE kısıtı da aynı olayın kuyruğa iki kez girmesini engeller.

    Zaman penceresi: event_time "şimdi" değil, olayın gerçek zamanıdır

    Offline satış entegrasyonunda en sık yapılan hata, event_time alanına gönderim anını yazmak. Olayın değeri, ne zaman gerçekleştiğiyle anlam kazanır; sözleşme salı günü imzalandıysa ve işçi çarşamba gönderdiyse, event_time salı olmalıdır.

    İkinci önemli nokta, Meta'nın kabul ettiği geriye dönük pencere. Bu yazıyı yazarken belgeler, olayların gerçekleştikten sonra sınırlı bir süre içinde gönderilmesini istiyor ve bu süre action_source değerine göre farklılaşabiliyor. Sınır zamanla değişebildiği için kodda sabit bir sayı gömmek yerine yapılandırmadan okuyorum ve pencereyi aşmış olayları göndermeyi denemek yerine skipped olarak işaretleyip raporluyorum:

    from datetime import datetime, timezone, timedelta

    MAX_AGE = { # yapılandırmadan gelir; güncel değeri resmi belgeden doğrulayın
    "system_generated": timedelta(days=7),
    "physical_store": timedelta(days=7),
    }

    def is_sendable(evt, action_source: str) -> bool:
    age = datetime.now(timezone.utc) - evt.occurred_at
    return age <= MAX_AGE.get(action_source, timedelta(days=7))

    Bu kontrolün pratik sonucu, satış ekibinin CRM'i zamanında güncellemesinin bir veri kalitesi konusu haline gelmesi. Sözleşmeyi on gün sonra sisteme giren bir ekip, reklam optimizasyonuna o satışı hiç kazandıramaz. Bu yüzden ben bu entegrasyonu kurarken satış ekibi için "sözleşme imzalandığı gün CRM'de kapanır" kuralını da süreç tarafında yazılı hale getiriyorum.

    action_source ve olay gövdesi

    Sunucudan giden olay gövdesinin iskeleti şöyle:

    def build_payload(evt, lead, action_source="system_generated") -> dict:
    data = {
    "event_name": evt.event_name,
    "event_time": int(evt.occurred_at.timestamp()),
    "event_id": evt.event_id,
    "action_source": action_source,
    "user_data": build_user_data(lead),
    }
    if evt.value_minor is not None:
    data["custom_data"] = {
    "value": evt.value_minor / 100,
    "currency": evt.currency,
    }
    return {"data": [data]}

    action_source alanı, olayın nerede gerçekleştiğini anlatır. Web formu için website, CRM'in kendi ürettiği aşama değişiklikleri için system_generated, satış ofisinde imzalanan sözleşme için physical_store gibi değerler kullanılabilir. Doğru değeri seçmek hem raporlamayı hem de uygulanan kuralları etkiler; bu yüzden olay sözlüğünde her olayın action_source değerini de sabitliyorum.

    value tarafında bir uyarı: Konut gibi yüksek tutarlı satışlarda gerçek sözleşme bedelini göndermek bazı ekiplerin istemediği bir şey olabilir. Bu durumda tutarlı bir "değer skalası" (örneğin ürün tipine göre sabit bir puan) kullanmak, optimizasyon sinyalini korurken hassas ticari bilgiyi dışarı çıkarmamanın bir yolu. Hangisi seçilirse seçilsin, tutarlılık önemlidir; ay ortasında yöntemi değiştirmek raporları kırar.

    Gönderim işçisi: Toplu istek, yeniden deneme ve hata sınıflandırma

    İşçinin görevi basit görünür ama hata sınıflandırması önemli:

    import requests, time

    def send_batch(events, leads, pixel_id, token):
    payload = {"data": []}
    for evt in events:
    payload["data"].extend(build_payload(evt, leads[evt.lead_id])["data"])
    url = f"https://graph.facebook.com/{API_VERSION}/{pixel_id}/events"
    resp = requests.post(url, params={"access_token": token}, json=payload, timeout=15)
    if resp.status_code >= 500 or resp.status_code == 429:
    raise RetryableError(resp.text) # üstel bekleme ile tekrar
    if resp.status_code >= 400:
    raise PermanentError(resp.text) # kaydı failed yap, alarm üret
    return resp.json()

    Kurallarım:

    • 5xx ve hız sınırı hataları yeniden denenir; bekleme süresi her denemede artar ve event_id aynı kalır.
    • 4xx hatalar (geçersiz parametre, süresi dolmuş token) yeniden denenmez. Tekrar göndermek sonucu değiştirmez, yalnızca log kirletir. Bunlar bir alarm kanalına düşer.
    • Token kod içinde değil, gizli değişken yönetiminde tutulur ve süresi izlenir. Sistem kullanıcısı token'ı kullanmak, bir çalışanın hesabı kapandığında entegrasyonun sessizce durmasını engeller.
    • Test olay kodu ile canlıya geçmeden önce olayların Events Manager'daki test ekranında doğru göründüğü doğrulanır.

    İzin ve veri minimizasyonu

    Kişisel veriyi üçüncü bir platforma, hash'lenmiş olsa bile, göndermek bir hukuki dayanak gerektirir. Türkiye'de KVKK, Avrupa'dan gelen alıcılar için GDPR bu çerçeveyi çizer. Benim teknik tarafta uyguladığım kurallar:

    • Lead kaydında reklam ölçümüne ilişkin izin durumu ayrı bir alan olarak tutulur ve işçi, izni olmayan kişi için olay göndermez.
    • Yalnızca eşleşme için gerekli alanlar gönderilir; adres, doğum tarihi gibi alanlar "olsa iyi olur" diye eklenmez.
    • İzin geri çekildiğinde, kuyruktaki bekleyen olaylar da iptal edilir.

    Bu bir hukuki görüş değil; ama izin kontrolünü kodun içine bir if olarak gömmek, sonradan "kimin verisi nereye gitti" sorusuna cevap verebilmeyi sağlıyor.

    Ölçüm: Entegrasyon gerçekten çalışıyor mu?

    Kurulumdan sonra baktığım üç gösterge var:

    1. Eşleşme kalitesi: Events Manager'daki olay eşleşme göstergesi. Düşükse ilk şüpheli normalizasyondur.
    2. Gecikme dağılımı: occurred_at ile gönderim zamanı arasındaki fark. Satış ekibinin CRM'i geç güncellemesi burada hemen görünür.
    3. CRM ile panel karşılaştırması: Aylık kapanan satış sayısı ile Meta'nın aldığı Purchase sayısı arasındaki fark. Birebir tutması beklenmez, ama fark aniden açılırsa token, izin veya şema tarafında bir şey bozulmuştur.

    Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

    Piksel zaten kurulu, neden ayrıca CAPI gerekiyor?
    Piksel yalnızca tarayıcıda olan olayları görür. Telefonla kapanan, satış ofisinde imzalanan ya da haftalar sonra gerçekleşen satışlar tarayıcıda olmaz. CAPI, bu olayları CRM'den doğrudan göndermeyi sağlar.

    E-postayı hash'lemeden göndersem Meta kendisi hash'lemez mi?
    Bazı resmi kütüphaneler hash işlemini kendisi yapar, ama kendi kodunuzla gönderiyorsanız normalizasyon ve hash sizin sorumluluğunuzdadır. Kontrolü elde tutmak, hatayı ayıklamayı da kolaylaştırır.

    Aynı satışı yanlışlıkla iki kez gönderirsem ne olur?
    Aynı event_name ve event_id ile gönderildiyse tekilleştirilir. Farklı kimlikle gönderildiyse iki satış sayılır; bu yüzden kimliği deterministik üretmek önemlidir.

    Satış on gün sonra CRM'e girildi, yine de gönderebilir miyim?
    Meta'nın kabul ettiği geriye dönük pencereyi aşmışsa olay reddedilir. Güncel sınırı resmi belgeden kontrol edin ve asıl çözümü süreçte arayın: satış, gerçekleştiği gün CRM'e girilmeli.

    Gerçek sözleşme bedelini göndermek zorunda mıyım?
    Hayır. Tutarlı bir değer skalası da optimizasyon için yeterli sinyal üretebilir. Önemli olan, seçilen yöntemin zaman içinde değişmemesi.

    Bu entegrasyon küçük ekipler için fazla karmaşık değil mi?
    Kuyruk tablosu, normalizasyon fonksiyonu ve bir gönderim işçisi birkaç yüz satır kod demek. Karşılığında reklam algoritması form dolduranları değil, satın alanları öğrenmeye başlar. Lead hacmi düşük ama satış değeri yüksek sektörlerde bu fark özellikle belirgin.

  24. Anagnorisis – Caregriever Review By Lavender Larcenist

    Anagnorisis nearly didn’t return, as the material for Caregriever (and the album title) was originally conceived as a solo project for frontman Zachery Kerr. Created to grapple with the grief of caring for his father-in-law over five years up until his death, the aptly titled Caregriever is the band’s first new record in a decade. As the scope of the solo material blew up, Kerr shared it with his old bandmates, and their latest was born. With a decade behind the band and music originally conceived for another project, is Anagnorisis’s return worthy of its emotional inspirations or a miasma of ideas and execution?

    Time has not dulled the Louisville, Kentucky-based Anagnorisis’s skills in the slightest. Caregriever tugs at your emotions like the clawing hands of the River Styx, and our Charon on this journey is frontman Zachery Kerr. His acid-burned, throaty howls elevate the poignant lyrics to a fever pitch, leading to emotional climaxes at every turn. When “Choke” opens up in the back half and he screams, “IT’S YOUR FUCKING FAULT,” as the band drops into all-out frenzy, you know Anagnorisis are back. Cody McCoy’s drumming may be the highlight; his impactful playing is natural while still carrying an incredible sense of rhythm even at top speed. “Nothing Left To Give” displays his meaty fills and battering snare, but he is a force across the album. Zak Denham and Kerr fill Caregriever with memorable guitar playing that dips outside the typical black-and post-black range the band is known for. This record is faster, meaner, and dripping with vitriol and bittersweet love in equal parts. Punk asides, riffs like chasms, and alluring solos pepper Caregriever. Josh Mumford’s bass is the only victim here. While the production is phenomenal throughout, it is frequently lost in the cacophony of Kerr’s screeching vocals, McCoy’s battering drums, and the dual-guitar assault. When the bass does peek through, it is weighty and twangy, exactly as it should be. This isn’t an issue with the production; it is more like too many good elements fighting for your attention at any given time.

    Caregriever never lets up or wastes time, and even when it slows down, the record offers interesting tangents and rich atmosphere. “Death of Man” features a thrumming bassline, samples, and industrial music as Kerr rasps through the entire track. “Death of Men” brings back the post-black metal sound that Anagnorisis is known for while mixing in blackened punk. “A Living Grave” features the record’s only clean singing, tastefully weaving the melody with a plucky post-metal throughline. For a record just over forty minutes, there is an astounding amount of variety. Every track belongs, and the band isn’t a strict adherent to structure in all the right ways.

    Caregriever is a record that is rich on every level. The playing is top-tier, creativity abounds, and the lyrics are heart-wrenching. The worst I can say is I would have liked to hear a little more bass in the mix, and the album could actually gain a song, as it is a bit heavy on atmospherics in the middle. These are nitpicks in the grand scheme of things, and Anagnorisis shows that they are more than capable of one of the best comebacks I never knew I needed. Caregriever smartly slices the fat from previous records, and in the transfer of Kerr’s solo material to a full record for the band, they have their best work to date.

    Caregriever is a tightly played, carefully crafted, and passionately conceived record that will stand the test of time. I can’t wait to see what Anagnorisis does next with this newfound creative drive, because Caregriever sounds like a young band’s debut, not one from an act off a decade-long hiatus. If you love White Ward, Ashbringer, and Bosse-de-Nage, Anagnorisis is likely already on your list; if not, Caregriever makes a case for one of the best black metal records of the year. Bring a box of tissues, but be ready to fling snot everywhere as you headbang through the hauntingly beautiful hellscape of Caregriever.

  25. Sarcator – The Ones We Follow Review By Creeping Ivy

    Last year, Sarcator flew under the radar with a pretty rad platter. On the heels of their mixed sophomore outing, 2025’s Swarming Angels & Flies served up delectable blackened thrash with necrotic notes and refreshing traditional/surf-rock side dishes. A year later, I’m surprised to see them already plating The Ones We Follow. Also surprising was word that this Swedish trio has all but abandoned thrash on album four, adopting a flavor profile they don with a curious descriptor: ‘death’s rock.’ Skepticism-inducing as any major sonic shift should be, the rock elements of Swarming Angels & Flies did elevate my excitement over Sarcator’s riffy brand of thrash with the crispy skin. In turning this element into the main course, I’m left wondering if these young Swedes returned to the kitchen prematurely.

    Despite the generic shift, Sarcator still retain the unhinged aggression characterizing their blackened thrash menu. Indeed, guitarist/vocalist Mateo Tervonen belts an acerbic ‘owww!’ on opener “The Ones We Follow,” with drummer Jesper Rosén speeding between kit pieces underneath. It’s the guitar work, however, that distinguishes old from new Sarcator. Rather than relying on syncopated palm mutes and serpentine riffs, Tervonen and Leo Buchalle favor twangy licks and careening power chords. The solos also affirm this new, ‘classic’ approach, adding bluesy soul into the mix. Almost rockabilly in nature, it’s as if Hellripper collided with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. As the record progresses, Sarcator introduce a host of country western elements—slide guitar, harmonica, the occasional snake rattle—with big Wayfarer1 energy (“Volatile Insight,” “Ain’t Fit to Live”). These country western-isms might imply a seismic shift, but it’s not as if Sarcator sound like a completely different band. The sandwich is now (western-tinged) rock, but its wrapper is still youthful, abrasive, and—yes—blackened.

    Sarcator build this batch of tunes atop time-tested chord progressions, with Tervonen’s vocals tasked with cutting through the listener’s palette. For the most part, he delivers. The choruses on “In Search of Oblivion” and “Volatile Insight” hit the sweet spot between attitude and stickiness through deliberate spacing and cadence. Tervonen’s tongue trills are tantalizing, becoming a bit of a signature throughout. Not every song, however, strikes a salutary balance. “The Underground Streets” could pay off its guitar earworm with a stronger vocal hook, while “Bleeding Ages” is in need of memorability. Penultimate country rocker “Wasteland Strider” tosses a vocal curveball, containing clean singing before it gets death n’ rolling. It’s a jarring change that, while well executed, feels a little like variety for variety’s sake this late in the album. Production-wise, Tervonen’s voice is a bit more prominent in the mix than I’d like, at the expense of melodic support from the bass.2 But overall, The Ones We Follow sounds open and punchy, with Tervonen’s voice commanding deserved attention.

    While not their longest meal, The Ones We Follow pits a girthy album length against a mostly immediate vibe. Shorter songs like “The Ones We Follow” and “You Gotta Possess Me” kill it, kicking in the door with controlled chaos. The clash between immediacy and girth, however, reveals itself mostly in the album’s epics. Seven-minute centerpiece “Rotting Chapels” implies scope with its key-changing buildup, but it ends up sounding like a longer version of the abrasive surf rock heard earlier. Meanwhile, closer “Wanderlust” epitomizes its title, wandering from mid-paced cowboy bumps to “Hot for Teacher”-style fretboard gymnastics and harmonica-sweetened blues dirt. It’s highly entertaining stuff, skirting the line between jamming and riff salad-ing. The album’s 50 minutes may look long on paper, but there’s enough head-turning developments to keep things interesting. The Dire Straits-y ending to “Rotting Chapels” comes to mind, as does the brush-fueled gallop in “Bleeding Ages.”

    Leaving me a little hungry at first, The Ones We Follow ultimately won me over with its blackening of a more rustic protein. I applaud Sarcator for daring to change, and there’s lots of tasty stuff on here, with nothing off-putting. Still, The Ones We Follow could elevate its addictive attitude and classic songwriting with more vocal hooks and judicious editing. What crystal clear, however, is that the members of Sarcator are having a hell of a lot of fun here, rocking out and experimenting in equal measure. I’ll continue following these Swedes in the future, as they show signs of following The Ones We Follow with something seriously sumptuous.
