  2. It's been a while since I reported on our own #boat. Before coming to Cheshire I did manage to call in on the #mooring and remove the #heaters from her as, with any luck, there won't be any more #cold snaps that justify trying to stop the boat from #freezing.

She really is beginning to look as if she needs a really good #clean. We had promised ourselves she'd be lifted out last #winter = but the house move got in the way and it was never arranged.

  3. #NorfolkSouthern reaches $600 million settlement to settle #EastPalestine #derailment suit

    By David Goldman, CNN
    April 9, 2024

New York CNN — "Norfolk Southern has reached a $600 million settlement that, if approved by a court, will resolve all lawsuits covering thousands of residents within 20 miles of the 2023 #EastPalestineOhio, derailment that spilled more than a million pounds of #hazardous #chemicals into the soil, water and air.

"The rail company said the settlement is intended to offset costs related to the spill that sent a plume of #ToxicSmoke into the air and displaced many residents and businesses. But Norfolk Southern didn’t admit to any liability or wrongdoing as a result of the settlement.

"'Individuals and businesses will be able to use compensation from the settlement in any manner they see fit to address potential adverse impacts from the derailment,' the company said in a statement. 'This could include healthcare needs and medical monitoring, property restoration and diminution, and compensation for any net business loss.'

"The settlement of the class-action lawsuit, which subsumed 31 separate cases, also allows residents within 10 miles of the derailment to receive additional compensation.

"In a court filing Tuesday, the plaintiffs said they expected to file a motion for the judge to approve the settlement within 10 days. Attorneys representing the claimants said they hope to make the claims process easy and efficient and to begin sending out payments by the end of 2024.

"'We believe this is a fair, reasonable and adequate result for the community on a number of levels, not the least of which is the speed of the resolution, and the overall amount of the awards residents can expect, which will be significant for those most impacted by the derailment,' said Seth Katz of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, M. Elizabeth Graham of Grant & Eisenhofer, Jayne Conroy of Simmons Hanly Conroy and T. Michael Morgan of Morgan & Morgan, in a combined statement.

"Following the February 3, 2023, Norfolk Southern freight train derailment, residents were ordered to evacuate temporarily. State and federal environmental officials say testing shows the air and water in the town is now safe, but some residents still complain of health problems, including burning sensations in their eyes, tingling in their lips, heaviness in their chest and swelling of lymph nodes in their necks and groins."

  4. At least one family business in #Norfolk is going to be heavily disrupted as they've lost a key staff member to His Majesty's Prisons, and two of the lads who got nicked have already served time previously for the obnoxious act of stealing #NitrousOxide cylinders from #NHS hospitals, even travelling up North to do so (there is absolutely no need to do that, the stuff can still be diverted from catering supplies).

It looks like authorities got them just before older and more sensible lads aged out of the game and laundered the money they had made into the family business so old bill are getting smarter these days (or they pissed off someone locally and got grassed up)

Demographics of the offenders and substances involved suggests they were part of local #rave scene

  5. The are several people who delight in sitting by #Ludham #Bridge, on the #NorfolkBroads videoing the goings on and uploading the results to #YouTube.

In the peak of the hire #boat #holiday season it can get quite busy and for many #holidaymakers it is the first #bridge that they encounter.

This example is typical of the genre and really makes you wonder how many skippers should never be allowed to take the helm of a boat again.

  6. I guess we'll have to wait until next year before the council's rubbish contractors #Serco finally remove our #2minutebeachclean #December

This year we removed dozens of #crabpots , countless meters of rope & 100s of kg of other crap from our beach.

The #BBC #weather app for our #village reported this morning we were in an hour of #drizzle, so I took the first of these pictures as we set out to take breakfast at the #postoffice.

Last October we moved to the old fishing village of Winterton-on-Sea on the #Norfolk #coast. You can tell that from the fact the PO sells buckets and spades and we pass a #lighthouse on the way #home.

  11. While the #Britsh #canals have much to recommend them, when you have the open spaces of the #Norfolk #Broads on your #doorstep it's hard to say which are best.

I like to think I can balance the various diffrrences fairly as we are lucky enough to have a small #canal #workers #cottage that fronts the #Bridgewater #Canal at #PrestonBrook where we plan to keep our #canoe after our house move.

  12. Met a #turnstone with a bit of bling during this morning’s #2minutebeachclean
The fog & grey skies didn’t help my bridge camera out. Have managed to identify some of the details. The ring appears very worn. Hoping we’ll meet up again tomorrow. #birdringing #waders #birds #Norfolk

  13. Shortly after an out of control black & white #GreatDane tried to knock me over on #Overstrand beach, one of my favourite things happened….we spotted a ringed bird on the sea defences. I managed to get a pic with my bridge camera. We returned home, I cranked up my Mac, read the ring & reported a magnificent #GreatBlackbackedGull
    #birdringing #Norway #ornithology . #Norfolk #NorthSea #simplepleasures

    Fascinating creatures.

Wish I had a good answer to that one. Being a #boater I have never tried actually seeing the #Broads by land. Places like #Wroxham and #Horning have plenty of possibilities for #riverside views but not broads.

Most Broads have edges too soggy to have roads near them and most of the banks are in private hands or the hands of organisations such as the #NationalTrust and #Norfolk #Wildlife Trust, whose priorities do not to encourage unencumbered access by the masses.

Malthouse Broad, near Ranworth, must be one of the best exceptions. I've never tried to reach Salhouse or Wroxham by road, but the owner of the first offers moorings which are accessible from a car park some 800yds away and it's probably possible to explore the grounds around the sailing club at Wroxham Broad.

If you don't mind being part of a party then the #NWT do have guided walks at #Hickling.

  16. If someone were to ask me why I think we need to end capitalism, the hardest part of answering is that simply listing everything would take far, far too long. I think everyone already knew that this kind of murderous negligence was standard operating procedure for capitalists, but this disaster has once again made it clear that the millions they spend on corrupting the government have worked, and it takes weeks of pressure, and international attention to get the EPA to tell a big corporation to do the bare minimum, and test to see how badly they poisoned that town.

This whole situation is a disgrace, and it barely scratches the surface.

  18. Looking back on my favourite #Norfolk #Archaeological #find that I have had the honour to illustrate for the county archive. This is the tip of a magnificent #IronAge bronze #scabbard from #Congham. It was found in good condition bent in two in a waterlogged ditch running through a wood. It was about 30 inch long. The engraved decoration is wonderfully delicate in its execution. The upper part is also beautifully decorated. #illustration #Archeodon #histordons #archaeology

  19. A #NorfolkSouthern Policy Lets Officials Order Crews to Ignore #Safety Alerts

  21. I have just put the finishing touches to my hand stitched traditional english working smock. Based on a 19th century #norfolk example, but made floor length with added pockets. It is made from an old thick cotton sheet dyed blue. There is nothing like trying to make something you admire to teach you how much time and effort are required to achieve it. It gives you much more respect for the pre machine age workers skills. #handmade #needlework #costume #traditional #smocking #embroidery
