  1. #introduction time!

Hi, I'm Bea. I seem to be leading a highly squiggly life that's led me through a wild range of experiences, has, at this point been going on for Some Time, and fortunately shows no signs of stopping yet.

Currently, amongst other things, I'm a #coder, a #boater, a #music obsessive, and a #cat mama, plus I #parent a non-zero irrational number of other humans of various ages in this, my sandwich era.

    I've also been a #soundEngineer, a #teacher, a professional #psychic, a #theatre technician, and so on. I'm a #Londoner, a lapsed #Glaswegian and a recovering #NewYorker.

I'd list more specifics, but honestly they change all the time; two of the rare constants in my life are #singing and #bass, though I'm increasingly surrounded by a constellation of strange instruments; physical and digital, musical and nautical.

I'm also a #vegan (for the animals) #trans shapeshifter practising #nonMonogamy, and am gay for girls of most genders and apparently now the occasional boy. If this feels like rubbing it in your face, feel free to move your face.

I have an overdeveloped sense of justice, but only compared to your average late capitalist human, and the kind of highly spicy brain you'd expect from, uh, well, all of the above.

I'm afraid things are likely only going to get weirder from here.

No TERFs, no SWERFs, no cops, no Tories (or any other forms of fascism).

    Warning! contains multitudes!

Wish I had a good answer to that one. Being a #boater I have never tried actually seeing the #Broads by land. Places like #Wroxham and #Horning have plenty of possibilities for #riverside views but not broads.

Most Broads have edges too soggy to have roads near them and most of the banks are in private hands or the hands of organisations such as the #NationalTrust and #Norfolk #Wildlife Trust, whose priorities do not to encourage unencumbered access by the masses.

Malthouse Broad, near Ranworth, must be one of the best exceptions. I've never tried to reach Salhouse or Wroxham by road, but the owner of the first offers moorings which are accessible from a car park some 800yds away and it's probably possible to explore the grounds around the sailing club at Wroxham Broad.

If you don't mind being part of a party then the #NWT do have guided walks at #Hickling.

  3. More birthday prep-

I decided to make myself a fancy hat! Inspired by the "boater" hats of the 1920s, the design is simple and made of just 3 circles- with one of them bent to the profile of my head.

I bent it almost entirely out of scraps- even using some donated electrodes and side tubulating it- just like they would have done in the 1920s.

Hey, I am using mercury in the production of this hat just like those mad hatters. Although I am using only one drop- dispensed with a hemetrically sealed glass and teflon injector :).

I underfilled it to just 5 torr (instead of the usual 9) so there will be less resistance and longer battery life- with the tradeoff of shorter tube life- I dont need this to last 75 years anyways :)

I might add "B-DAY" to the front if I have time.

  4. Před 6ti lety jsem si pořídil můj @sunseeker27, tahle loď vypadala když jsem jí koupil. Spoustu vody mezitím uteklo a hodně věcí se změnilo 🙂 #boater #boating

  5. The simple joys of #boatlife. There are few things calculated to bring more joy to a #boater's heart than the feeling of having a full water tank and an empty toilet!

Tomorrow is Diana's chemotherapy session. Hopefully, the water leak will be sorted by the end of the day and we can have another go at getting to our mooring on Saturday. However, fixing the leak requires the shower tray to be lifted (probably for the first time in 45 years), so who knows how smoothly it will go.

  7. I've found time to record the launch but it's not all good news. We still have the clatter in the "gearbox" when in gear but not under load. The noise disappears as soon as you add some revs. As you'll read at:
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
    and
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
we now reckon that it's not the gearbox but the reduction gear that is producing the noise and that, we're told, is a problem as it's not a part still in production.

  8. Singing the Blues is launched. But the fault in the gearbox still exists after one engineer has had two goes at fixing it and a second a third go. No wonder the boat was being sold! I'll update

in the next day or two!

  9. The tank is back but still not fitted. The new tank has metric fittings. All the ancillary pipework now has to be changed to match the fittings. However, launch day is still to be Monday, when the work on the gearbox can be tested. The BSS Examiner will also call and, hopefully, issue a pass certificate. We can then pay the #BroadsAuthority toll and legally move the boat to our mooring in Colitshall on Tuesday.

  10. Dropped in on the boatyard today to see what the arrangements were for the revisit of the BSS examiner. The fuel tank was still not connected. It had to be returned to the manufacturer to be rebuilt. The internal baffles had been fitted horizontally, but there was to be no bung for a fuel level sensor to be fitted, as we will rely on the existing dip stick built into the filler cap. Result: the dip stick couldn't reach the bottom of the tank!

Your image reminds me of one I took more than a decade ago.
It was an amzing day. I got to sail with a retired Thames Sailing Barge captain who was contemplating buying a #seahawk #yacht like mine. I was also allowed to sail the #tideway #dinghy he owned. The photo is found about halfway through the tale at:

Do bikers have a different experience with herons?

As a boater I find they take off when the bows of your boat get within about 50ft and proceed to land on the bank some 50yds ahead. This gets repeated up to six times until, instead of moving ahead of you they fly back past you and appear to settle at their original position some 300yds behind you.

It's made me assume they all have distinct territories, but I'm not clear how far they stretch.

It wasn't intended, but is turning out that way. As one of the subscribers to the GregAfloat mail list says:

Anyway, you are experiencing what I call the onion effect of restoring old "stuff". You peel and cry, peel and cry. But eventually you have enough onion rings to have a huge plate of fried onion rings! (You may not have experienced that delicacy, but if your cholesterol level allows it is delicious.)

  15. It's been an intense couple of weeks of work on Singing the Blues. There's a 4000 word update at:
    gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23082
For those less inclined to read there's 21 photos to view.
The boats's insides have been stripped out to allow the fuel tank to be replaced. More issues have been found that our surveyor should have picked up, but we hope we're within sight of being launched before the end of September. I've even begun to clean the outside!

I am a little over 6ft and did #harecastle #tunnel northbound in 2002. I don't recall being asked to wear a hard hat which, even then, would have been a requirement had there been a real issue with headroom. Both these images show that where there is a sudden drop in headroom the arch was yellow painted. In the second image you can just make out the northern portal ahead of the boat in front of us.

  17. #Skipper update! I've updated app to v11 @avaloniaui and it works like charm! I'm experimenting with Nuke build to give automatic release options and I was testing experimental iOS build! #SignalK powered, build with #dotnet and done for #Boating by #boater 😀
