That reminds me, I should be writing to various MPs about cottages like those sold off by the #Bridgewater #Canal #Company at #PrestonBrook.

The terrace, built in the late 1700s, was sold off one house at a time in the 1950s. They all had brick built privies clustered together in a #communal #yard. Because the remaining #tenants all needed access to the yard the canal company retained ownership and provided an annual licence to each purchaser permitting access to the communal area.

There's no #lease. No #contract on #fees to be charged. The canal company can, it seems, charge what they like both to issue a #licence to a new #buyer of a #cottage and any #annual renewal #fee.

We ought to be able to add some appropriate clauses onto any upcoming #legislation that gives owners of #leasehold #property the #righttobuy such communal ground.

The attached map from 1894 shows the terrace, their privies and how some don't even have space to hang out washing to dry. @ukwaterways

  5. Bloody hell - a #canal in #Shropshire has been completely emptied by a #sinkhole - with boats aground in the empty channel, others in farmers fields and a few million litres of #water in the field.

Major incident has been declared with 50 firefighters deployed, thankfully no one has been hurt and water has been prevented from flooding the surrounding areas..

  6. Bishop Lucey’s Pigeon

If there’s one thing that was a constant in the old Bishop Lucey Park in Cork it was the pigeons. They swarmed over the old city wall where humans were denied because of a fence around it. Sometimes the wall was thick with them, waiting for a child to come along and scream and laugh at them as they flew into the air in panic.

  8. Just when you thought he couldn't get stupider or more historically ignorant...

His Orangeness Mango Mussolini, the Melon Felon, has a bee in his bonnet [1] about canals, but it's not just about #Panama now. On his social network - a fork of Mastodon, of course - he wrote:

    > American Ships, both Military and Commercial, should be allowed to travel,
    > free of charge, through the Panama and Suez Canals! Those Canals would
    > not exist without the United States of America.

    The Panama canal, maybe.

The Suez canal, however, was proposed by a #Frenchman, financed primarily by #Europeans, built by forced and voluntary labour sourced from countries in the region under the management of the French, and then operated by a French company with a contract for 99 years.

The USA had absolutely #zilch to do with the Suez canal. Which is probably for the best, because the USA was kind busy fighting its own civil war and then the #reconstruction that followed it - the canal was built from 1859 to 1869.

So, Mr. Trump: pull your head out of your ass, admit your ignorance, apologize to Egypt, France, and the rest, and slink off to your history-free corner of D.C. with your tail between your legs.

[1] Maybe it's good he has a bee in there. There isn't much else rattling around in that particular bone soap dish.

This is the link about the #Litchfield #Canal I meant to include in my earlier toot. Lots of photos covering the building of the #aqueduct

Not sure what you would have seen on the video, but the #Litchfield #Canal project is fascinating. Back when a new #motorway was built round #Birmingham the builder was forced to provide an #aqueduct in anticipation of the #volunteers #raisingfunds to rebuild the canal. It sits in mid-air to this day. I drive under it regularly. Read more at:
