  2. It's not very hard to switch your low-wattage electronics (phones, computers, fans, lamps, etc) to using a small solar power system on your roof. The harder things to power with solar are high-wattage appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, HVAC, etc). I don't have the latter, living on a boat.

  3. We're currently in #Cheshire in our #cottage fronting the #Bridgewater #Canal
Just decided I needed a photograph to prove it when nb Vulcan passed by. Given the number of solar panels I thought it might be a #liveaboard but a few moments research revealed this website:
    vulcanowners.co.uk/
which revealed it used to belong to the Challenger fleet. I recall the days when they were rivals to OwnerShips. Both companies RRare now defunct.

Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.

I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.

It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.

And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

  5. Yes YES babes it is sunny on the river today and I have this morning successfully cruised my 60 tons of Dutch barge to the water point and back after a lot of prep, for only the second time ever. Turning a 74 foot boat in an 80-90 foot wide river is not for the faint of heart but it was was pretty smooth this time. Feels SO GOOD! #Boatstodon #CanalLife #BoatLife #liveaboard #BoatsThatToot #leaBoaters

Yes, propane! Most #narrowboats have #propane #cookers. It can also be used for #heating. Alde is probably the leading brand for producing #propane boilers for boats that will run radiators as a #domestic #boiler will.

#Diesel #heaters are also popular. Eberspacher and Webasto being the main brands though many fit very competitively priced Chinese units, but I read somewhere that they are not approved for marine use and should they start a fire insurance would be invalid.

A few #liveaboard boaters have larger Aga or Rayburn oil or solid fuel fired cookers that will also drive radiators

I referred to #cooker rather than #stove deliberately. Almost all privately owned narrow boats have small traditional style #solidfuel
(wood/coal) stoves fitted. On 19th century #boats theses would have been used both for heating and cooking. On modern boats they are usually stand alone heaters in the saloon, but some will be fitted with boilers and drive radiators elsewhere on the boat.

  7. Falling Apart

I've always had a butterfly brain, but is it getting worse and is my body falling apart too?

  8. First Dives in the Seychelles

I have been wanting to dive in the Seychelles for a long time. There is something about the isolation of the Indian Ocean and the promise of pristine reefs that has always called to me.

For this trip, I was diving off the SY Sea Bird, and we wasted no time getting into the water. This footage was captured right at the beginning of the trip, during one of my very first dives. The conditions were perfect. The coral reefs were awesome. The blue water was crystal clear and seemed to extend forever.

While the reefs themselves were stunning, the highlight of this dive was encountering a massive school of Soldierfish. They weren’t darting away or scattering; they were holding their line, moving through the open water like a “living veil”.

  9. Can anyone recommend a charger (or type of charger) to use for recharging a 24v lead acid leisure battery bank from a backup generator?
Currently we have a cheap charger bought online but it only puts out about 130 watts, which means running it for quite a long time to significantly recharge the batteries and is much less than gets fed to them when the sun shines. TIA

  10. @bee Yea it's tricky, there are so many different boat classifications. #motorboat hashtag will be a bit too broad.

Youll have more luck using hashtags like #dutchbarge or #houseboat. Depends what kind of content you're looking for :>. #liveaboard might be a good one to follow.

  11. Bagenkop oder Palma?

Bagenkop, stürmischer Wind aus Ost. Mal wieder Sturmflutneigung an der westlichen Ostsee. Nachts einstellig, 8 Grad.
