Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.
It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.
And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

I can see the backlash around AI continuing to grow with a new licensing protocol that *should* force AI crawlers and bots to pay compensation to use content. This could easily burst the AI bubble!

Oh great, yet another company to go to shitty "cloud licencing": https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2025/09/08/elevating-your-citrix-experience-innovation-efficiency-and-the-future-of-licensing
"From April 15, 2026 on, file-based licensing will no longer function."
Not sure about "Elevating my Experience", more like elevating my blood pressure...

Well, here’s another app I am removing from all my devices. “Termius” seemed like a very good ssh client for iOS devices. Had lots of good features, was relatively stable.
But their licensing is batshit. $10/mo for a HOBBIEST license. Forever. Never ending. For a fucking terminal program.
Eat shit guys. The company I work for has a staggeringly complex pair of programs that are the top tools in the industry, and they license THOSE for $10/mo.

One more from #fediversefinds, this time on #licencing and #foss and #opensource. Do check it https://isitreallyfoss.com/, it is a wonderful starting point by @danb

Random question about #foss #licencing and #code copyright.
What is the status of grabbing some code from a specific project, and then "translate/adapt" it to a different language? For example from Csharp to a different language.
Is the new code subject to the previous one? Can it be relicensed, or is it up to the original license how this works (in this case is the Ms-PL)?
I believe there should be no issue, since this is emulating the ABI, not the exact source code but not sure if its OK.

e-Resource Licensing Explained https://berkeley.pressbooks.pub/eresourcelicensingexplained/
"...this guide is intended for librarians and library professionals who license electronic resources..."

The topic of adding clauses related to compliance with local law to #OpenSource licenses has come up in my mailbox again.
tl;dr: Don't do this! It creates uncertainty and probably makes a #license non-compliant with the OSD.

#Licencing #FLOSS #freesoftware #FSL
Have not heard of the FSL licence before. It looks interesting and useful.

What do you think?
(Not a lawyer! Just a 🦇 )

Hello. If I register a #patent for an AI technique, will the patent also protect my work's produced models? Is there something like #GPL for #AI #software which includes the models generated/trained as well?
Please boost! Also if you know a lawyer interested in such these stuff and helping #FOSS please let me know!

Oh hey licence nerds if a thing is licenced under Apache license 2 and the Licensor ceases to exist, does that mean there's no (easy) further mechanism for any Contributions to go into the Work?

@dagb I'm not an expert on Tesla's #licencing but the fact that tinkerers need to reverse engineer the software in order to make changes kind of proves there can't be that much #opensource (let alone free) software involved.
Also: just because some tinkerer *can* modify some #Tesla software, doesn't mean it is legal to do so in the US or that the company couldn't prevent them from doing so remotely (which is what @pluralistic correctly identifies as a #digitalrights and #antitrust problem).
