Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.

I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.

It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.

And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

#Boaters #techies does anyone know much about Rev Counters (tachometers) driven by the alternator?

Nothing on my boat is original and some parts don't work nice together. The alternator I inherited didn't fit properly, eventually it fell off and damaged itself. I got a generic one that fits better and charges OK.

The old one didn't have an output for the tacho but someone had made it work by attaching a lead to a coil and taking it out through a vent. (cont) #BoatsThatToot

I read one report that suggested it will take a year to fix.

That's a lot of #water to tread.

It only took 5 minutes to lose visibility after getting towed out of marina this morning.
The fog rolled in very quickly from south of bay, from ocean & also from mountains above, nearby.

Hydroplane racing.

Shortly after some personal watercraft sped by about 15 ft from the shore going about 50 mph. Shortly after that one of the innocent looking 'race official' boats had blue lights and sirens going towards the offending jet skis which were still having their fun about 15 ft from shore. It sounded like they were told to not do what they were doing and to move down river away from the racing. They had to have come zipping right through where they were racing.
