Meant to make time earlier but other things, like a #birthday, got in the way. Took a #trip with some folk I know #aboard #Norada. I was even allowed to take the #helm while a reef was being taken out as we approached #Wroxham.My mate is one of the #volunteer #skipper s and spends a lot of time on any of their various #craft.
Unless you know about #Norfolk 's 19th #inland #sailing #barges, some of which were converted into #holiday craft late in their life you won't get a good impression of the scale of the craft, as all my pictures were taken while aboard.

Spoke to my mate today. He's booked a #wherry, on which he'll be the #skipper, for a private trip next week. Unfortunately, several folk have dropped out so it looks like I may be taking a cruise with him from Ranworth to Wroxham on one of them next week. Could be £30 well spent. -

I feel the advice was bit of teaching grandma to suck eggs. If anything it was just an excuse to post an image from my 60th birthday cruise back in 2008.The one advantage of #canal #boats is that they tend to be well insulated compared to a boat you might hire on the #NorfolkBroads. The fifty year old ex-Broads hire #cruiser we now own is totally uninsulated and even a brand new Webasto diesel heater fails to keep that warm when there's #ice on the #river.

When you draw up at Richardson's Marina to book in for your boating holiday you'll find yourself alongside a row of posters. I thought the one for the local Search and Rescue Volunteers made you properly aware you are in Norfolk, which is not as universally flat as some would have you believe, but certainly is not rugged or mountainous.

I have been thinking about creating #Fediverse #Groups for some time as I read that groups are federated far more effectively than hashtags. I have finally applied for one to be created at FediGroups.social.
Initially, I was thinking of creating one for the #norfolkbroads as that's where our boat is, but there's little use of that hashtag or of the #ukcanals, so with memories of the late 1990s when news:uk.rec.waterways was extremely active I have opted to create one for #ukwaterways
I'm told I'll get notification when's it's approved and created. Let's hope they'll be enough use of it to keep it alive - i.e. toots at least every month!

It's been a while since I reported on our own #boat. Before coming to Cheshire I did manage to call in on the #mooring and remove the #heaters from her as, with any luck, there won't be any more #cold snaps that justify trying to stop the boat from #freezing.
She really is beginning to look as if she needs a really good #clean. We had promised ourselves she'd be lifted out last #winter = but the house move got in the way and it was never arranged.

Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.
It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.
And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

I failed to find time to add a further update when we completed our cruise on Tuesday. From #Neatishead we passed The Ice House, one of the impressive #houses at #Irstead Shoals.
We moored at #HowHill where we spent an hour walking around the #gardens. We then proceeded to #LudhamBridge where we moored for the night, eating at The Dog where a couple of guys turned up and entertained us for half an hour. It was possibly the best impromptu #entertainment I've ever experienced. The photograph does not indicate how much #laughter there was and how we enjoyed #singing along.
We left our #mooring just before 06:45 as we needed to be back in #Stalham for a meeting at 10:00 and needed to pick up some stuff from home before that.

We followed this morning's #plan, starting by going to #Neatishead #Staithe and buying #provisions and having a #coffee and #Norfolk #shortcake at the #community #shop.
The #dyke narrows considerably as you near the staithe but what amazed us was seeing a #Muntjac deer on the return down #Limekiln #dyke

Having cruised down the #River Ant we reached #BartonBroad. We plan on staying here tonight with our #mudweight over the bow. Tomorrow morning we'll call at #Neatishead and buy a few #provisions at the #village #community #shop.

It's been a while since I visited our #boat (built in 1977). When we were last aboard the second hinge on the toilet seat disintegrated.
Given the way parts of both had gone brittle I wonder if they were the originals. True or not I was surprised that spares were available. It's just that I hadn't found time to fit the #seat till today.
On arrival there was a surprise, an intriguing #craft on a nearby #mooring, a 38 seat #escape pod from a now dismantled #NorthSea #oil #rig
Once on the boat I stowed away the heaters that had been left on board but no longer plugged in and refitted the #toilet seat.

Belaugh Boatyard had it's usual changing collection of #craft. The river had long flows of #PussyWillow. The #Wroxham locals were out #swimming at Caen Meadow and negotiating Wroxham Bridge took all my concentration, so no time for a photo.
