On the way to visit Clouds Hill, where TE Lawrence (of Arabia) settled with his #PTSD , we passed Hardy's house, Max Gate.I'd been meaning to look at Clouds Hill for about 30 years, the list was quite long.
Interesting place.
When I lived and worked in Dorchester Hardy was remembered. As "that miserable bugger".

Valley Garden: Bluebells, Bog Plants and a Baffling Fern
In the early 1950s, Lord Feversham had a rather splendid idea. To keep his staff at Bransdale Lodge busy, he ordered a “wild garden” to be carved out of Gimmer Bank Wood, on the soggy banks of Blowith Slack, a tributary of Hodge Beck. In went azaleas, rhododendrons, flowering cherries ...

Standing on Nature for a Better Angle
The track in this photograph of the bluebells in the National Trust’s Newton Wood is a monument to the perfect social media post. We love nature so much that we are treading it into the ground. It is so disheartening.

Ramsons—The Plant That Smells Like Trouble and Tastes Like Dinner
You will smell ‘em before you see ‘em. A whole wood reeking of garlic — this is wild garlic, or Ramsons, doing its thing for a couple of months each spring.
The Old English word “brmsa” gave its name to places still on the map today: Ramsbottom, Ramsey, Ramsd ...

A solitary tree with leaves turning to warm autumn colours stands proudly on a manicured lawn, framed by dense woodland in the heart of Wallington, a National Trust estate in Northumberland. The peaceful grounds are part of the historic gardens, where sweeping countryside views blend with carefully maintained parkland. Sunlight filters through the trees, casting soft shadows that enhance the serenity of the landscape. A haven for #NaturePhotography and lovers of #HistoricGardens, Wallington offers a perfect setting to enjoy #AutumnColours and tranquil #CountrysideViews.
This is one of my fave photos at Wallington, when visiting I always look forward to seeing this tree.

Wallington Bridge
A photo from last weekend’s jaunt up Northumberland, we called in at Wallington Hall on the way home.
This National Trust property is a sign that one can build a very good name if one is willing to import enough rum and sugar. This truth is not exactly comfortable for those who prefer their history without a side of human suffering.

Had a lovely trip out today to Dunstanburgh Castle. Northumberland coastline as stunning as ever, and it was a beautifully sunny day. Got to watch cliff-nesting kittiwakes and swallows diving through the sky, waves crashing on the rocks, and giant bumblebees.
Bought some cute socks with sheep on at the English Heritage gift shop 🐑

Got a week off so we headed up to National Trust treasure Cragside today. Glorious weather! Beautiful trees, and the rhododendrons are about to pop out soon so we’ll be back. Always a great place for a walk. Spent 5 mins stood waiting in silence for a little thrush gathering worms so I didn’t disturb her. Perfect ❤️

A visit this afternoon to Crook Hall and Gardens, now in the care of the National Trust in Durham NE England.
A visit at this time of the year, when the garden's plants are going into overdrive, always reminds me of a song heard regularly on the 'wireless' in my youth.
'English Country Garden' was a top-ten chart hit back in the day sung by a fella called Jimmie Rodgers:"How many kinds of sweet flowers grow
In an English country garden
I'll tell you now of some that I know
And those that I miss you'll surely pardon
Daffodils, hearts ease and flox
Meadowsweet and lady smocks
Gentian lupine and tall hollyhocks
Roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, forget me nots
In an English country garden."Crook Hall itself is surrounded by English country style gardens, which is said to be among the best in the north of England.

The Humble Bluebell and the Heavyweight Rift
The bluebells in Newton Wood seem a bit thin on the ground. The coverage of these flowers is not as full as in previous years. It is still early days though. In a fortnight they may well be more vibrant.
Some people like the flowers. Others might remember the Scottish group called The Bluebells. Their track "Yo ...https://www.fhithich.uk/2026/04/22/the-humble-bluebell-and-the-heavyweight-rift/
