  12. I stayed late today to burn the binder out of all the hand pulled tubes I coated. Tomorrow I shall make a pretty doodle and (hopefully) see some fruits of my labour.

Fingers crossed for good shades of brown and pink light- a paradox I enjoy.

I have been noticing phosphor drips around the studio now. At first I was freaked out thinking they may release phosphor into the air- but they really just act like white paint. I cannot kick them up or scuff them.

Not sure if I should be laughing or terrified that my messes now glow pretty colors under a germicidal bulb?

Gosh- just look at that pink stripe! Some of my glassblower friends back their tubes with white glass. Sure that makes it look nice when its off... but I prefer the white backing to come from a glowing phosphor powder!

    Sooo excited for tomorrow!

  13. At work today I found that the VHB tape had finally failed. Booo. No matter- the cotton floaty bits have now completely dissolved in the solvents. I got the mill spinning again by adding a clamp to it, and a shim to make the jars drift to the other side away from the motor.

My Ebay chemical buying habit is supporting some Ukrainians- my third chemical arrived today- Diethyl Phthalate- probably the most toxic of the bunch. I added a bit of it to the Chi Chis bottle which I divided in two.

I weighted out 30 grams of warm white 3700k phosphor and added it to the ChiChis, and 60 grams adding to a Wegmans Bruschetta Jar. After mixing for a little, I upped the ChiChis jar to 90 grams.

Apparently the ratio is 1.1 kilos for 8 liters... I am learning. They say to leave it spinning for two days before using it. Friday will be test day- assuming I can wait that long :)

    So excited!

  14. In my researching for coating tubes I have been collecting a bunch of literature around the matter. This Russian book, the "Biblioteka Svetotekhnika" printed in 1990, (originally 1977) had an interesting method around checking the thickness of the phosphor coating on the inside of the tube.

As seen in figure 9 here, it involves a light source in a box that your test tube goes into and a photocell sits at the top for a resistance reading of the light going through the phosphor coating of tube- a quick way to measure thickness.

They are using an incandescent bulb on isolation transformer and variac along with a Selenium photocell. I will be using a neon filled tube that I might dim and a CDS cell adhered to the top hole in my PETG box.

Thanks 3D printer.... I guess I could have made this in cardboard... but the printer makes it too easy.

  15. More birthday prep-

I decided to make myself a fancy hat! Inspired by the "boater" hats of the 1920s, the design is simple and made of just 3 circles- with one of them bent to the profile of my head.

I bent it almost entirely out of scraps- even using some donated electrodes and side tubulating it- just like they would have done in the 1920s.

Hey, I am using mercury in the production of this hat just like those mad hatters. Although I am using only one drop- dispensed with a hemetrically sealed glass and teflon injector :).

I underfilled it to just 5 torr (instead of the usual 9) so there will be less resistance and longer battery life- with the tradeoff of shorter tube life- I dont need this to last 75 years anyways :)

I might add "B-DAY" to the front if I have time.

  21. Fluorescent Friday : Hurghada Departure

Some creatures underwater have the ability to absorb light and re-emitted at a longer wavelength.

    Coral, Red Sea, Egypt

Using a yellow filter scuba divers can observe this awesome aspect of nature. The filter can be attached to a divers mask. Underwater photographers and videographers will also need to add a yellow filter to their camera lens to capture the light spectrums.

    Lizardfish, Red Sea, Egypt

These underwater photography were taken during night dives in the Red Sea, off the coast of Egypt.

    Coral, Red Sea, Egypt

Here are more details about my camera set-up and approach to capturing fluorescent images during night dives.

  23. Fluorescent Friday

    https://youtu.be/Boz2sfnyIFo

I have always been intrigued by how and why some creatures fluoresce above and below the waterline.

Biofluorescence is the absorption and reemission of light from living organisms. Fluorescent organisms have proteins built into their skin or other tissues that absorb energy from light and reemit it as a different colors. This results in a wonderful display of color.

In the ocean, blue light penetrates through the water, where some organisms absorb that energy, and then emit light at a lower energy in colors such as green or red. This article from Dive Photo Guide dives into the science of fluorescence as it applies to underwater photography.

Scuba divers need special yellow filters to see the reemitted light. In addition to my normal camera set-up, I used a blue light, and yellow filters on my camera lens and on my mask. Below are the additional items I used to capture the video above.

    • Sealife Sea Dragon Mini Fluoro Light
      • This light came with yellow filter for a scuba diver’s mask.
      • Since this was my first experience with fluoro diving and I was not sure how it would work. I selected a lower end mini model and was pleased with the results. However, if I have the opportunity to upgrade, I would go with the higher model that has a wider beam range. For non-photographers/videographers, the mini would suit them well.
    • Tiffen Yellow Filter
      • The yellow barrier filter blocked any reflected excitation light and transmit only the fluorescence from the subject.
      • Basically, allowed me to record exactly what I was seeing through the mask filter.
      • It’s a wet lens, so I just attached it to the front of my underwater camera housing.

I shot this video off the house reef at Six Senses Laamu Resort during our first night dive there. The Laamu Atoll is located in the Maldives.

Overall, I was amazed by the color captured during the night dive. I will plan to try again on my next night dive. Hopefully, I can schedule the night dive around coral spawning. This is the time when corals colonies reproduce by releasing their eggs and sperm all at the same time. However, with a global pandemic, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to coordinate this year.
