That reminds me, I should be writing to various MPs about cottages like those sold off by the #Bridgewater #Canal #Company at #PrestonBrook.

The terrace, built in the late 1700s, was sold off one house at a time in the 1950s. They all had brick built privies clustered together in a #communal #yard. Because the remaining #tenants all needed access to the yard the canal company retained ownership and provided an annual licence to each purchaser permitting access to the communal area.

There's no #lease. No #contract on #fees to be charged. The canal company can, it seems, charge what they like both to issue a #licence to a new #buyer of a #cottage and any #annual renewal #fee.

We ought to be able to add some appropriate clauses onto any upcoming #legislation that gives owners of #leasehold #property the #righttobuy such communal ground.

The attached map from 1894 shows the terrace, their privies and how some don't even have space to hang out washing to dry. @ukwaterways

  3. We're back at our #cottage on the #Bridgewater #Canal. This morning, for the first time, we took a #walk over the #Preston #Brook #Tunnel to see the southern portal and #Dutton #drydock. There's a little further information about the images in the ALT text.

Back in April I mentioned the terrace of cottages on the Bridgewater Canal and the history page I'm building about it. The article mentions "Cotton's Bridge" and includes an old map showing its location.

We were at the cottage back in May and I took these two images of the site of the bridge. You have to be travelling north, having just emerged from Dutton Tunnel to appreciate the narrowing of the canal at the site of the old bridge.

As you will work out the cottages you see to the left of one of the images are part of the terrace numbered 7-12.

We often visit our granddaughter who lives with her Mum in Sale and stay for a few days in a cottage that was probably built in the 1770s and sits on the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. The building of the Bridgewater Canal kick-started the Industrial Revolution and the cottage was built at what was to become its junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal. There's a whole lot of history there which I'm beginning uncover in this article.

  6. We're currently in #Cheshire in our #cottage fronting the #Bridgewater #Canal
Just decided I needed a photograph to prove it when nb Vulcan passed by. Given the number of solar panels I thought it might be a #liveaboard but a few moments research revealed this website:
    vulcanowners.co.uk/
which revealed it used to belong to the Challenger fleet. I recall the days when they were rivals to OwnerShips. Both companies RRare now defunct.

  7. 10:00 and the promised coal delivery has been made.

The local #fuel #boat is moored and delivering, #coal, bottled #gas and #oil to us and our neighbours along the #Bridgewater #Canal while a dog walker passes by.

  8. We'd emailed the wonderful Liam of midlandsandcoast.co.uk/ to try to sort out a #coal delivery to #ourplace which fronts the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal. I took a photo of his #boat last time we got #fuel from him. It's based the same distance on one side of #PrestonBrook #bridge as we are the other. This time I needed an emergency supply. He gave me a bag, lent me a barrow to carry it home and said he'd invoice me when he delivered all we have room to store.

As I collected the fuel the sun came out to reveal The Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd yard in all its glory.

  9. While the #Britsh #canals have much to recommend them, when you have the open spaces of the #Norfolk #Broads on your #doorstep it's hard to say which are best.

I like to think I can balance the various diffrrences fairly as we are lucky enough to have a small #canal #workers #cottage that fronts the #Bridgewater #Canal at #PrestonBrook where we plan to keep our #canoe after our house move.

  10. @GottaLaff Ugh. Being driving distance from his club in #Bridgewater was bad enough.
