"Target let a Jim Crow minstrel show blackface costume end up on their website accidentally, and it's a perfect example of how attacks on diversity are often attempts to rollback history. Remember, there was a point where Target had a Black Artist Collections even outside the month of February. They had a pipeline to stock Black-owned products and had contractual commitments to work with Black-owned agencies. But when diversity became a "bad word," they rolled all that back. Minstrel shows were a highly effective social tool used to embed negative ideologies about the Black community and if someone Black was in the room they would have called that out immediately. But history teaches us that all forms of discrimination become amplified and emboldened when you don't have systems to stop them. Target has issued an apology. What they need to realize is that by removing diversity, they created the conditions for bigotry. The same thing is happening in our education systems, local governments, even our food supply. When marginalized voices are silenced, history has already shown us what happens. The question is, will we listen?"
