  1. Gifts from Emperor #Puyi to his departing tutor Johnston reside in the SOAS library and archives. These include the emperor’s fan, now part of the Library’s Special Chinese Art Collection. The black fan features a landscape picture in gold and bears an inscription of the Imperial Seal of Xuantong (Puyi was the Xuantong Emperor). The fan was given as a farewell gift on 15th September 1930 when Johnston left China following the formal handover of Weihai back to Chinese sovereignty.

  7. The development of ‘tie-on’ pockets during the 17th century was a defining moment for women, providing a highly practical and extremely popular detachable accessory for carrying their possessions, similar to the function of handbags today.
In polite society, formal situations, or when travelling, pockets would normally be invisible under a woman’s petticoats, but for working women, they might be more visible and immediately accessible, worn just under an apron.

Musée d'art et d'histoire de Neuchâtel
Crafted between 1768 and 1774 by watchmakers Pierre Jaquet-Droz, Henri-Louis, and Jean-Frédéric Leschot, these mechanical marvels are extremely delicate. To preserve them, the museum only operates them once a month: every 1st Sunday at 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00.
