  1. "This Is Halloween" is a song from the 1993 film #TheNightmareBeforeChristmas composed and written by #DannyElfman. In the film, it is performed by the residents of the fictional "Halloween Town", which is the film's main setting, and introduces the town's Halloween-centered lifestyle. The song was also included on the #filmsSoundtrack.

  2. Mistodon: as we approach the sweet spot between Halloween and Christmas, this silhouetted #teletext screen by Horsenburger, depicting a tender moment in #theNightmareBeforeChristmas between Sally and #JackSkellington (on a spooky hill that is actually #OogieBoogie) straddles both realms handily. It was included in last month's spooky MIST1025 artpack collection.

  3. 32 years ago, Henry Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas had its wide theatrical release. What began as a short poem with a few early character sketches by Tim Burton, was shaped by the contributions of many incredible artists into the cult classic we know. From Michael McDowell's initial draft to the final screenplay of Caroline Thompson (who also had concerns about the racist stereotype undertones of Oogie Boogie) that greatly expanded upon the original ideas, turned Jack’s curiosity into an existential search for meaning, and added emotional depth and complexity to the characters.

Sally wasn't part of Burton's original poem, existing only as a vague idea in sketch form. It's Thompson who created her entire arc, from her initially unrequited love to her desire for freedom and finding herself beyond what she was told she should be, serving as the heart of the film. The film’s characteristic gothic and whimsical aesthetic also owes its final form to the combined genius of visual consultant Rick Heinrichs, cinematographer Pete Kozachik, and art director Deane Taylor.

It took 3 years, over 200 meticulously crafted puppets, and an entire team of animators, puppet builders, and lighting designers to make TNBC what it is. Beyond the characters, the story, and the music, the film is also a prime example of the artistry of movie making and practical effects, and the magic of stop-motion animation.

Expect a combination of random of stories for Doctor Who, Criminal Record, The Thick of It, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

  11. I'm currently working on a Jack x Sally story for this big "Twelve Days of Prompts" series I'm working on. Halloween is coming, so it's only right. My friends and readers asked for it. They're just the sweetest, spookiest couple.

  12. CW: Quick thoughtdump on Nightmare Before Xmas as queer, neurospicy, and trans+ allegory

(Not enough mental energy / spoons for a full write-up, but we're doing a thoughtdump to get this out of our mind, and possibly return to it another time.)

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a queer, neurospicy, and possibly trans+ allegory.

    • Christmas is a confusing neurotypical, cis het holiday.
    • Hallowe'en is a quirk, neurospicy, queer and trans+ holiday.
    • Jack comes across like neurospicy (likely AuDHD) theatre kid, who's burnt out and maybe hasn't yet realised they're trans+.
      • Jack recharges by being alone (so likely not solely ADHD).
      • Jack feels out of place, even among other neurodivergent peers (possibly other queer and/or ADHD theatre folk).
      • Jack can't explain what they're feeling (alexithymia).
      • Jack's Lament highlights their depression, malaise, and struggles (including arguably around gender).
    • Jack latches on to the idea of Christmas and wants to be like that for themselves.
      • Jack thinks this will make them happy (What's This? song).
      • Jack doesn't understand it, but tries to do it regardless (Jack's Obsession song).
      • It's basically Jack trying to be something they're not (cis het neurotypical).
    • Sally represents Jack's trans+ fem self.
      • Jack ignores Sally, despite the many signs she keeps giving him, and doesn't understand her fears over the venture.
      • Sally's not sure that Jack will ever listen to her (Sally's Song).
    • Jack eventually crashes (literally and figuratively), realising how foolish and damaging their actions were.
      • Trying to be someone else made them realise how important it was to be themselves, and how much fun that can be if they embrace it (Poor Jack).
    • Jack's true happiness comes when they realise that Sally had been right all along and that they should have listened to her.
      • By accepting Sally, Jack becomes complete (Finale / Reprise).
      • It reminds us of how Neo's love for Trinity in The Matrix is an allegory for Neo accepting that they're trans (self-acceptance; self-love).

These are very raw thoughts, but needed to get them out before our mind imploded under the weight 😅

  13. It's March so that means it's time to turn over to a new month on the kitchen wall calendar. Most years we have a Nightmare Before Christmas calendar and 2025 is no exception.

  14. Had to buy myself some new slippers last week and went for some Jack Skellington ones from the Nightmare Before Christmas, much to my wife's expressed jealousy. Opened presents from my niece today to discover a matching pair of Jack Skellington socks to go with them. Lovely coincidence.

  15. Impulse purchase while out shopping in ASDA at lunch. It's both nightmarish and festive, and it will probably work well on a cruise we've got planned for next year that will see us spending Halloween in the Caribbean. How could I not?

  16. Happy Halloween! While I’m not dressing up in costume for an office party, I do feel the mood for spooky fun. I’ve got the house to myself while I work, so it’s time to crank some tunes!

First off is Skatune Network‘s Skalloween album, released in 2021. For those of you who don’t know who Skatune Network is, they are an incredible one person Ska band who arranges and performs Ska covers of our favorite video game, cartoon, and pop music. This 8 track album features music from Beetlejuice, appropriate with the sequel that just came out, to Scooby Doo, a cartoon which pretty much celebrated Halloween all the time. Skatune does an amazing job with all of their tracks, and they collaborate with other great artists on this album as well. I’ve made a YouTube playlist of the album below, but you can also find the album on Bandcamp (link) and on other streaming media platforms.

It’s a Halloween movie! It’s a Christmas movie!! IT’S BOTH!!! The Nightmare Before Christmas, released over 30 years ago, has one of the most iconic movie soundtracks which Danny Elfman ever wrote. As I observed when I wrote about this soundtrack for it’s 30th anniversary, it was the combination of Elfman’s amazing score with the voices of the actors which makes this soundtrack so successful. Elfman even provides the singing voice of Jack Skellington (speaking voice provided by Chris Sarandon, who also played Prince Humperdink in The Princess Bride)! I’ll admit, I’ll stop and listen to any song from this soundtrack whenever it comes up in my Plex, but I’ll always try to watch this movie on Halloween. This year, with the recent passing of Ken Page, the voice of Oogie Boogie, I’ll also be sure to raise a glass when his song comes up.

On the twenty-third day of the month of September
In an early year of a decade not too long before our own
The human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence
And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do
In the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places

So began Alan Menken‘s and Howard Ashman‘s musical adaptation of the Roger Corman B movie classic, Little Shop of Horrors. The stage version made its way to the silver screen in 1986, and the gems from this soundtrack are plentiful. Steve Martin absolutely drills “You’ll Be A Dentist”, while Ellen Greene goes from tender wistfulness in “Somewhere That’s Green” to full out Broadway belting in the show stopping “Suddenly Semour”. Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops sets the standard as Audrey II, while Rick Moranis cemented his status as a comedy horror schlep as Seymour after his turn in Ghostbusters as Louis Tully. The movie is a joy to watch and the soundtrack is a joy to listen to.

There’s one musical which has a special place in my heart that also fits with the season. That is The Phantom of the Opera, a mystery never quite fully explained. This was a musical I remember listening to multiple times while in high school along with all the theater kids I shared classes with. It was also one of the first drum corps shows I remember seeing live as the Santa Clara Vanguard performed it in 1988 at the Parma, Ohio, show. I would eventually go on to perform music from Phantom with the Empire Statesmen in 2000. This was also the first musical I would see performed live at the Palace Theater in Playhouse Square. It’s the 25th anniversary concert performance of Phantom which I listen to more than the original cast soundtrack, though, as I find the audio mix is much clearer and the performances of Sierra Boggess as Christine Daaé and Ramin Karimloo as, in my opinion, The Phantom are as powerful, if not more so, than Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, plus there’s less of the campiness that the original version of Phantom had.

Of course, we can’t have a Halloween playlist without some drum corps, so here’s the 1994 Bushwackers performing music from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

  21. Happy Halloween! 🎃 I’m not doing anything to celebrate this year, no dressing up, no pumpkin carving, not even a scary movie, so here’s some costumes from years past. 👻 Skellington’s my fave, The bat bow tie is handsewn (badly), and all the stripes are handpainted, and it took me effing ages, think I was up till 4am! Trinity is all store-bought, except the haircut that I just happened to have. Joker is thrifted.

  22. 👻🎃 Happy (early) Halloween! 🎃👻

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this combo before, since Zero from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” looks so eerily similar to #Pteranodon!
