How to contribute to the Teletext Archive
This archive grows because people volunteer, in two ways:
📼 Recovering — turning a raw off-air VBI capture (usually from an old VHS tape) into a clean T42 file.
🖊️ Restoring — fixing up pages that came out of that recovery a bit worse for wear, to match what was broadcast.
Open to anyone with a verified account.

With #teletext you never had to muck about with CAPTCHAs. The 30 second or so wait for your selected page to appear was much more bearable in comparison.

Back in the day, could Ceefax and/or Oracle have replaced every transmitted page with an alert so it would have appeared no matter what page you selected?

For the past ~6 months I’ve been trying to decode NABTS #teletext (the more obscure of North American teletext standards, yes NA had teletext) on real hardware decoders using old recordings and learned that it probably wouldn’t work because the recordings were too lossy.
I had since shifted to generating my own NABTS which is a WIP, but this week the decode-orc team cracked software decoding for #NABTS and NA #WST! https://github.com/decode-orc/decode-orc/releases/tag/v2.7.0
First time this content has been seen in decades!

Mistodon: plus ça change... today Count Binface is campaigning against Nigel Farage in Clacton, but 9 years ago it was his predecessor #LordBuckethead running against Theresa May in Maidenhead. One item on his manifesto was the return of Ceefax, so #teletext artists, in this case @illarterate, were only too keen to boost his campaign. This screen was included in the MIST0717 artpack collection released nine years ago this month.

Mistodon: naturally there was some overlap in subject matter between our most recent science ficiton-themed MIST0526 artpack and the previous MIST0426, which dealt with books and authors. Here is a #teletext portrait by @atonalosprey from that collection of one of the titans of the genre, #ArthurCClarke, famous for writing Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama, and of course 2001: A Space Odyssey.
