  1. Suddenly, my throwing rocks is the one act people find urgent enough to criticise with a Qur’anic verse, after everything else that happened in that circus apparently failed to inspire the same religious concern.

  5. Circus

I was told to put my hand into a box containing ten snakes because I'm a Muslim woman and I believe in اللّٰه and His Messenger ﷺ, because one of the snakes is actually non-venomous, and because every believer does this challenge in this circus and they're all fine. I refused the challenge and walked away from the circus. People call me a kafir.

  9. Orang Ikan wants to be The Defiant Ones with a monster during WWII, and that’s exactly the problem. When history is already monstrous, allegory turns into evasion. Instant camaraderie, frictionless enemies, and a Godzilla-lite distraction flatten real atrocities into set dressing.

  10. Giambattista Tiepolo
An Allegory with Venus and Time
    1754-58
    Oil on canvas, 292 x 190 cm
    National Gallery, London

One of my favourite pictures from London's National Gallery. I confess I often hold this picture in my mind's eye as a form of escapism -- an escape from strip malls, bloated SUVs, megachurches with fundamentalist PowerPoints punctuated by bad rock and extempore prayer, cargo pants,
presidential make up, the Hobby Lobby...
