  1. Today’s #sciArtSeptember prompt is the colour azure. There is a malting barley variety called azure, but this is foxtail barley- though the cyanotype itself is azure! Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum) is a native grass also known as bobtail or squirreltail barley.

A cyanotype is an early photographic method, first used in 1842, which produces a cyan blue print used today for monochromatic art or blueprints.🧵1/2

  6. This is one of a kind cyanotype and combined with rosy-orange sun print on water colour paper 11" x 14" with an image of small lily pads. The blue of the cyanotype mimics the blue of lake water for a serene image like looking down on a pond from above. A circular area is only in tints of blue while outside the circle is both blue and rosy-orange.

  8. I feel this is like those test patterns they used to broadcast on TV when they were having technical difficulties (maybe they still do?)…. Anyhow, no progress here, so enjoy this cyanotype of 2 fern leaves on handmade paper with a deckle edge.

Find it and other cyanotypes here:

  10. Nature Is Everything! 18 Stunning Artworks by Hannah Bullen-Ryner

In the quiet embrace of nature, artist Hannah Bullen-Ryner creates enchanting, ephemeral artworks that celebrate the beauty and fragility of the natural world. With a keen eye for detail and a deep respect for the environment, she transforms fallen petals, delicate leaves, and tiny stones into expressive creatures and intricate mandalas, each piece thoughtfully arranged on the forest floor. In this collection, Hannah brings a vibrant cast of characters to life—a curious opossum, a vivid […]

  11. I’m interpreting #InsertAnInvert2024 a little loosely again. You won’t necessarily find these bees in leaf litter, though you might as they do make nests in the ground or in hollow twigs, but they definitely can be found near our homes, using leaves, so here we are.

This is one of a series of related prints about leaf cutter bees, each unique. 🧵1/n

  12. I made 4 more in my series of related prints about leafcutter bees, each unique. Similar to the print in the pollinator garden, but the prints in my shop are on lovely Japanese washi paper & feature different plants. These prints are both about, & a sort of collaboration with leaf cutter bees! These small, but multifarious native bees are important …

  13. Lemon balm leaves, wet cyanotype on watercolour paper, 11” x 14”

First experiment with wet cyanotype with water and vinegar added to photochemicals to begin developing while exposing. I think I need to do more and aim for more dramatic effects but I like this first try.
