Obsession: Dread Overload in Smash Hit Horror Thing 🙂
Obsession is the surprise smash hit of 2026, a small indie supernatural horror film by YouTuber Curry Barker that’s already raked in £500+ million worldwide.
A genuinely frightening and unnerving film, it follows the obsessive behaviour of one young man as he tries to make his love interest fall head over heels for him. Boy, does that go wrong…
The Toxic Masculinity of Obsession
Where Obsession excels is with its sense of dread, delivered largely by the phenomenal performance of newcomer Inde Navarrette.
Modern themes of masculinity in crisis, incels, and the dating crisis abound. The lead character is Bear (Michael Johnston, also very good here) who is awkward and shy. He’s in love with his colleague Nikki (Navarrette), but is too petrified to ask her out on a date. Instead, he visits an occult crystal store and buys a novelty toy called One Wish Willow.
His wish? To have Nikki love him more than anything else in the world.
Once he makes the wish Nikki starts behaving in a bizarre, some could say obsessive, manner towards Bear. They become a couple and it all seems to go well for a few days, until her behaviour becomes more and more unusual. As if it’s not Nikki at all and she’s possessed by something else entirely (referred to by fans of the film as Wish Nikki).
As the narrative develops, it’s as if she’s possessed by a demon (themes of The Exorcist are what struck us). Her behaviour becomes increasingly insane and unsettling.
From the “SSTAAYYYY!!!!” moment onward, the sense of dread in Obsession is almost overwhelming. It’s genuinely a very uncomfortable viewing experience, which is the whole point of horror (if you’d forgotten).
What we found terrifying is, essentially, it’s a heightened depiction of a domestic abuse situation. One entirely of the guy’s making, but as the narrative unfolds he’s so insecure and toxic in his masculinity he’s unwilling to leave Nikki or try to help her. This isn’t a “oh, she’s a crazy chick!” narrative, it’s Bear who’s done this and he is clearly the villain of Obsession. Things get remarkably bleak, although there are some occasional bits of dark humour.
But then you get things like the film’s most disturbing moment, when the real Nikki is briefly able to speak to Bear from her possessed state and it reveals the horror of what Bear is responsible for.
Inde Navarrette is incredible (echoes of Mia Goth in 2022’s Pearl aplenty). It’s a performance where it’s almost more frightening when she’s not onscreen, as you’re terrified of what she might be getting up to next.
Great film, then, and a huge hit with the younger generations.
Although we’ve seen some online reviewers saying it’s the “best film in many years”, but coming across as the types who only watch superhero films. So, yes, this will seem like a breath of fresh air if all you do is watch the most mainstream Hollywood releases.
Obsession isn’t quite as original as some film fans have made out. It’s more a merger of Big (1988), Pearl (2022), the goddamn terrifying Get Out (2017), and The Exorcist (1973) into one hellish time of it.
Plus, we felt the ending trailed off over the final 20 minutes, but there’s one incredible solid 60 minute central run of astonishing dread that carries the whole thing. We’re very impressed by it, just don’t watch the film shortly before going to bed (otherwise no sleep shall be had).
STTTAAYYYYY!!! And Read About the Production of Obsession
This is one of those great success stories we get in film from time to time. Jaws is a classic example, plus the Mad Max series, but here it is again! The budget for Obsession was $750,000 and yet it’s already made $512.6 million at the global box office (and it’s still in cinemas earning).
Curry Barker wrote and directed the film. He’s a YouTube creator who normally focusses on comedy sketches, but uploaded a horror short called The Chair in 2023. That opened some doors for him and the film was adapted into this full feature.
Barker wrote the script whilst working in a tea shop. He cited Ti West’s cult classic Pearl (2022) as a big influence and even made the cast and crew watch the film before production began.
Casting proved difficult until producer Christian Mercuri highly recommended Inde Navarrette, who’d gained experience in the 2020 film Wander Darkly and some other short films. She cited some scenes from Get Out as an influence.
On a limited budget, the cast and crew worked closely together to overcome difficulties. It’s a classic example of creative thinking helping to bolster the film’s full potential, the result being it makes many $200 million blockbusters look a bit stupid in comparison.
How many superhero films have we had over the last 16 years that have been bang average? Then Obsession, not even on a $1 million budget, floors then. It is a message to Hollywood in its mainstream guise… take more risks! Stuff like this happens.
Obsession was shot from late October 2024 and ran for 26 days.
Once launched in mid-2026 in the US (August 2026 in the UK), critical acclaim and word of mouth led to audiences flocking to cinemas to see it. Now it’s the 10th highest grossing film of 2026! An incredible achievement. It’s already the fifth highest grossing horror film ever.
Why? Simply as it’s goddamn scary. Very good.

#WordWeavers 9/1: What is something your MC desperately wants but would never admit to wanting?
For Alistair, it's Fenella. And peace. He would never willingly admit to either of those things. He just isn't that sort of man.
#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Gothic #Victorian #Edwardian #Vampires #Werewolves #Supernatural
-
#PennedPossibilities 1115: What sounds or smells remind your MC of their childhood?
Let’s talk about Alistair for this one. The smell of baked goods in the kitchen. Tobacco and pipe smoke as well. The sounds of laughter. The sound of a woman whistling or singing (like his mother used to). The sounds of joy, honestly.

-
#WordWeavers 8/31: What's one thing you hope readers remember long after they finish your story?
That kindness exists, even in the darkest of places. Love does as well.
#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Gothic #Victorian #Edwardian #Vampires #Werewolves #Supernatural
-
#EroticMusings 66: Culture: How would your characters feel about how eroticism is perceived in your culture?
It's the tail end of the Victorian era. The mortals (AKA humans) would all feel scandalized. They would probably be disgusted. The immortals, on the other hand, would love it and feel right at home. As you can tell, they're vastly different.
#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Gothic #Victorian #Edwardian #Vampires #Werewolves #Supernatural
-
#WordWeavers 8/30: If you could interview one of your characters over coffee, what would be the first question you asked?
It might just be Fenella. I would ask her this: "If you still loved him and suspected that he felt the same way, then why did you ever think that leaving would make either of you feel better in the long run? Or that it would somehow change him?" But here's the thing... I understand why she left. She had to. She couldn't change him, and by leaving she got herself out of a situation that was slowly breaking her heart. It would be moot. In the end, I probably wouldn't be able to say or ask anything.

-
#WordWeavers 8/28: What's one question you're still trying to answer about your story?
How will I manage to wrap everything up nicely at the finish line?
#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Gothic #Victorian #Edwardian #Vampires #Werewolves #Supernatural
-
#WordWeavers 8/27: Which character would win a trivia contest?
Fenella and Alistair would win if they worked as a *team* for a trivia contest. They both know so much about life. If I go into detail and explain anything about their lives and what they've learned over the years, I might just reveal some spoilers, but there we are.

Rainy, miserable, cold and foggy days would fit perfectly.

-
#WordWeavers 8/25: If readers could keep one item from your story as a souvenir, what would it be?
I love this prompt. It really has me thinking right now...
Perhaps a book. One of Alistair's tales. Either that, or a living, breathing moth. 😋

#PennedPossibilities 1112: MC or SC POV: Can you tell us about the last time you laughed? What about when you cried?
Fenella: I’m sure I laughed at something Alistair said, to be fair. And as for crying, that might very well have been from a comment he made as well. Not at me, of course, he would never hurt me, but he often rips my heart to shreds without realizing it — just by mentioning our past, what we’ve endured or what we had together. I miss him dearly. And I wonder if he feels the same way. On occasion, he’ll look at me a certain way and I’ll be left wondering.

-
#PennedPossibilities 1110: What is your antagonist good at hiding about themselves? What are they bad at hiding?
Let’s talk about Duncan. He’s good at hiding how… possessive he can be at times. Things become a game to him. It’s all about the hunt. Fenella has become his current objective. What is he bad at hiding, though? How ruthless he usually is.
#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Gothic #Victorian #Edwardian #Vampires #Werewolves #Supernatural
-
#PennedPossibilities 1109: What question does your MC long to find an answer for? What answer do they hope for, and which one would they fear?
As we found out already in one of the previously posted chapters, Fenella enjoys researching vampires. She only knows bits and pieces of their lore. Alternatively, as she gets to know Hati, the woman reveals the origins of wolves (AKA werewolves) to her. Viking mythology isn’t just mythology. It’s history. It’s true. Fenella wishes she knew this much about her own people. Perhaps one day she’ll find the answers she seeks. Maybe the Eddas are a good place to start. I would go so far as to say that I’m not entirely sure what answer she’s hoping for and which one would frighten her, only because she doesn’t know where to begin.
(I had hoped to write more for this one, but I really don't feel well today. That’s okay, though.)

#PennedPossibilities 1108: Tell us something you like about your story. (Maybe something you find interesting, entertaining, or amusing.)
For me, this is something interesting and it verges on amusing (for Alistair, though). It also ties perfectly into tomorrow’s prompt and my answer, which you’ll learn. I really liked this snippet.

#PennedPossibilities 1107: Saturday Word Edition: Share something from your WIP pertaining to the word “anticipation.”
(For @thatwriterellie.)
I’ll share a tiny excerpt.
⬇️
“How long have you thought about this?” asked Fenella, her gaze bravely searching for his own. His thumb slid away her lips and he dragged it along her chin, inhaling sharply as he leant closer. Then his breath ghosted across her skin as he exhaled. It was almost an intimate caress, but she craved more.
“I’ve thought of little else since you left,” Alistair confessed. “It’s been torture.”
“Then show me what you’ve missed,” she begged, a hand falling to the small of his back. The anticipation was enough to swallow her whole. She pulled him into her, guiding him, and he groaned at the pressure, the closeness, and the intimacy behind it. His free hand settled on her hip, where he tightened his hold, and her knees went weak.
“Let’s try again,” she added. “I think we deserve a second chance.”

#WordWeavers 8/22: Which character would make the worst roommate?
Oof. Big oof. I can't choose between two of my antagonists, Isma or Duncan. I think Duncan would try to drain me dry and leave me to die on the floor. He would make a game of the hunt. Isma, however, would enthrall me and use me as a slave, maybe turning me into a fellow vampire later on, just to suffer as a life-long, immortal slave for him. I think, given the situation, Isma would be far worse.

#ScribesAndMakers 8/21: Link to or summarize yesterday's poll and reveal the answer.
I *do* have a character who's able to read minds. That would be Alistair.
I *also* have a character who sells antiques and art pieces. That would be Caden, and he's quite a businessman.
I don't have a character who was a spellcasting warlord at one time, though. That was a random answer I came up with in the moment.

#PennedPossibilities 1106: SC POV: When was a time where you had to make an impossible choice?
I talked about Caden last night, so let’s do it again.
Caden: It was when I left the cult. I hated every second of it, but I had to leave a friend behind. He needed my help to escape as well, but I couldn’t do anything for him in the moment. I had to run. He told me to go. I thought I could come back for him one day, so I ran, and ran, and ran.

Just had one hell of an idea for Book 2 of the Bloodbound Legacy Series. I knew it was going to be about Caden (who's a vampire), but I wasn't sure exactly what his story would be or where it would go. Imagine that he becomes enamored with a local Wraith, Phantom, or Spectre (I haven't decided yet on the lore or the creature's species name, but he'll be a more corporeal and tangible spirit). Since Caden was a character that was vaguely based on Crowley from Good Omens, just for a friend of mine, I could make said creature a good/light-hearted, fun, loving, caring one (a bit like Aziraphale). Maybe he even loves books and occupies a library in Moray, Scotland. Haunting a bit, making friends, etc. They could fall in love. Why not do a full dedication of sorts for a friend? We would be the only people who knew where the inspiration actually came from lol.
Let me know what you guys think... Yay? Nay? I really like it, to be honest. 🤔

I just watched this video which, to me, makes complete sense as to what the Backrooms does: Creates uncanny valley simulacra of our lives.
I've never read the philosopher (a major source for ideas of The Matrix series), but this brief essay makes a good argument:
When did Clark (Mary? Phil?) forget their original lives before Backrooms?

Spirituality & Religious Studies @spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com@spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com ·The Watchers
A watcher is a type of biblical angel. It shows up in both plural & singular forms in the Book of Daniel. This is where reference is made to the holiness of the beings. The Book of Enoch (2nd-1st century BC) refer to both good & bad Watchers, with a mani focus on the rebellious ones.
In Daniel 4:13, 17, & 23, there’s 3 references to the class of “watcher, holy ones.” The term was intro’ed by Nebuchaddnezzar who said he saw ” a watcher, a holy cone come down from Heaven.” He described how in his dream the watcher said that Nebuchdnezzzar will eat grass & be crazy. This punishment is “by the decree of the watchers, the demand by the word of the holy ones…” “that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men.”
The 1st Book of Enoch devotes a lot of attention to the fall of the Watchers. The 2nd Book of Enoch addresses the Watchers who are in the 5th Heaven where the fall took place. The 3rd Book of Enoch gives attention to the unfallen watchers.
In the Book of Enoch, the Watchers are angels sent to Earth to watch over the humans. They soon begin to lust for/after human women, & at the prodding of their leader, Samyaza, defect to illicitly instruct mankind & have kids with them, arriving at Mount Hermon. The offspring of these unions are the Nephilim savage giants who pillage the earth & endanger humanity.
Samyaza & his associates further taught their human “charges” arts & tech such as weaponry, cosmetics, mirrors, sorcery, & other techniques that would otherwise be discovered gradually over time by humans, not foisted upon them all at once.
Eventually, God allows a Great Flood to rid the earth of the Nephilim. But 1st sends the archangel Uriel to warn Noah so as not to completely destroy the human race. The watchers are bound “in the valley of the Earth” until Judgment Day (Jude 1:6). This is where some theories pop up. Like they’re in the Marianus Trench or in the depths of the Grand Canyon or in a mountain base.
The Book of Enoch also lists the leaders of the 200 fallen angels who married & consummated unnatural unions with human women, & who taught forbidden knowledge. Some are listed in the Book of Raziel (Sefer Raziel Hamalakh), the Zohar, & Jubilees. Here’s a short list of them:
- Araqiel: Taught humans the signs of the earth (geomancy). However, in the Sibylline Oracles, Araqiel is referred to not as a fallen angel (or watcher) but as 1 of the 5 angels who lead the souls of humans to judgment.
- Armaros: In I Enoch, taught humanity the resolving of enchantments.
- Azazel: Taught humans to make knives, swords, shields, & how to devise ornaments & cosmetics, metallurgy (specifically in the context of war)
- Gadreel: Taught the art of cosmetics (camouflage), the use of weapons & killing blows (martial arts & weaponry).
- Baraqel: Taught the signs of the stars (astrology)
- Chazaqiel: Taught humans the signs of the clouds (meteorology)
- Kokabiel: In the Book of Raziel, he’s a high-ranking, holy angel. In I Enoch, he’s a fallen watcher, resident of Hell, & commands 365,000 surrogate spirits to do his bidding.
- Penemue: Taught mankind the art of writing with ink & paper, & taught the kids of men the bitter & the sweet & the secrets of wisdom.
- Sariel: Taught mankind about the courses of the moon.
- Samyaza: 1 of the leaders of the fall from Heaven in Vocabulaire de l’Angelolgie.
- Shamsiel: Once a guardian of Eden as stated in the Zohar, served as 1 of the 2 chief aides to the archangel Uriel, when Uriel bore his standard into battle, & is the head of 365 legions of angels & also crowns prayers, accompanying them into the 5th Heaven. In Jubilees, he’s referred to as 1 of the Watchers. He’s a fallen angel who teaches the signs of the sun.
- Yeqon/Jeqon: He was the ringleader who 1st tempted the other Watchers into having adult spicy naked time with humans. His accomplices were: Asbeel, Gadreel, Penemue, & Kasdaye, who were all identified as individual “Satans.”
The Jewish pseudepigraphon 2nd Book of Enoch (Slavonic Enoch) referred to the Grigori. They’re the same as the Watchers in 1st Enoch. Chapter 18 presents the Grigori as countless soldiers with human appearance.
They’re located in the 5th Heaven. They’re identified as “the Grigori, who with their prince Satanail (Yes, you are reading that correctly) rejects the Lord of light.” One version of 2 Enoch adds that their number was/is 200 myriads (2 million).
Chapter 29, referring to the 2nd day of creation, before the creation of human beings, says that “One from out the order of angels” or “one of the ranks of the archangels” “conceived an impossible thought, to place his throne higher than the clouds above the earth, that he might become equal in rank to the Lord’s power. And the Lord threw him out from the height with his angels, & he was flying in the air continuously above the bottomless.”
The Mercer Dictionary of the Bible makes a distinction between the Grigori & the fallen angels by stating that in the 5th Heaven, Enoch sees “the giants whose brothers were the fallen angels.”
The longer recension of 2 Enoch 18:3 identifies the prisoners of the 2nd Heaven as the angels of Satanail.
First Corinthians 11:10, according to early Church Father Tertullian, refers to the Watchers. He taught that the lust of the Watchers was the reason for St. Paul’s directive to Christian women to wear a head covering. Tertullian referenced the case of a woman who was touched on the neck by an angel “who found her to be a temptation.”
According to Philo of Byblos, Sanchuniathon mentioned “some living beings who had no perception, out of whom intelligent beings came into existence, & they were called Zophasemin (In Hebrew: “Watchers of Heaven”). And they were formed like the shape of an egg.”
In the 1999 movie Dogma, the character Bartleby (played by Ben Affleck) is mentioned to have formerly been a Watcher. In the TV show Supernatural (season 10), the Grigori with 1 Tamiel (under the name “Peter Holloway”) appears as the main enemy of the episode. At 1 point, a picture is shown that is implied to be a painting of a Grigori. In the original Dragon’s Dogma, the dragon is called Grigori.
In the 1998 movie City of Angels (this is 1 of our founders’ favorite movies), Nicolas Cage plays a watcher angel who falls in love with a human woman (played by Meg Ryan).
