  1. Scientists Create Powerful New Form of Aluminum That Could Replace #RareEarthMetals scitechdaily.com/scientists-cr “A central achievement of the research is the first reported example of a cyclotrialumane. This compound consists of three #aluminum atoms linked together in a triangular arrangement. The three-atom structure shows an unusual level of reactivity while remaining intact when dissolved in different solutions.” #Science

  7. US temporarily lowers tariffs on Chinese shipments to 30 percent

US and Chinese officials met over the weekend to talk trade and so far the result is that the US has agreed to temporarily lower tariffs on most items shipped from China to the US, while China has also agreed to lower tariffs and allow shipments of rare earth metals for the time being.

For the next 90 days, the highest tariffs on Chinese shipments will fall from 145 percent to 30 percent, […]

  9. Ok.
I think people need to know, from a professional geologist, that #RareEarthMetals are not really all that rare and the US has huge economically viable deposits in multiple states. If Ukraine sold those rights at a premium, that is a huge win for #Ukraine. Trump is a very fucking stupid mark. If he had been the mark in Oceans 11, 12, 13, whatever, nobody would have believed how stupid he was.
No wonder this dumb motherfucker bankrupts every business he starts.

  11. As the grid loses power in heatwaves, and communities & landscapes face mounting extraction for battery supply chains, this video shows how we can make environmentally just transitions to solar at scale — cooking, heating, refrigerating food, and living our daily lives.

This is especially important in the context of mining, and furthers the vision of the newly announced Indigenous Peoples Principles and Protocols for Just Transition.

We're looking to support this vision in urban and residential areas through new housing projects, resilience hubs, and retrofits/conversions to existing buildings. If you're interested, we're very up to collaborate and connect with new partners on that!

Finally, please watch and share! We're hoping for a lot of people to see this, and watching till the end helps algorithms recommend it to more people. Hoping to bring a lot more of the conversation to this direction.

  26. Erin Wayman: Recycling Rare Earth Elements: As demand grows, pulling the metals out of discarded stuff is worth a try

"'Recycling is going to play a very important and central role,' says Ikenna Nlebedim, a materials scientist at Ames National Laboratory in Iowa and the Department of Energy’s Critical Materials Institute. 'That’s not to say we’re going to recycle our way out of the critical materials challenge.' Still, in the rare earth magnets market, for instance, by about 10 years from now, recycling could satisfy as much as a quarter of the demand for rare earths, based on some estimates. 'That’s huge,' he says."

  27. Nikk Ogasa: The Rare Earths: Luminous and Magnetic: What makes these metals so special?

"Rare earths fulfill thousands of different needs — cerium, for instance, is used as a catalyst to refine petroleum, and gadolinium captures neutrons in nuclear reactors. But these elements’ most outstanding capabilities lie in their luminescence and magnetism."
