Pietsch, Eyrilmaz, et al studied the relationship between pro-environmental attitudes among students and socioeconomic factors such as inequality, academic and press freedom, and HDI across several countries. The results are not straight forward; they see evidence that inequality in wealthier countries polarizes attitudes.
"Institutional openness in the form of freedom of information and inquiry does not automatically democratize environmental concern. Instead, it functions as an accelerator of existing inequalities: in highly affluent settings, a free press, in particular, provides an informational infrastructure that is disproportionately leveraged by high-SES families, thereby widening the attitudinal gradient between privileged and marginalized youth."
This is a serious challenge for educators working towards a just transition. In light of recent critiques of the neoliberal university in the UK, USA, Australia and elsewhere, it also suggests that this model of university education is actually harmful to just transition efforts.

Coal’s chimneys at Liddell are finally coming down, and in their place is a clean energy future for the Hunter. A 500MW battery, renewable industry, and new jobs on a former coal site is exactly the kind of transition we need.
