Pietsch, Eyrilmaz, et al studied the relationship between pro-environmental attitudes among students and socioeconomic factors such as inequality, academic and press freedom, and HDI across several countries. The results are not straight forward; they see evidence that inequality in wealthier countries polarizes attitudes.
"Institutional openness in the form of freedom of information and inquiry does not automatically democratize environmental concern. Instead, it functions as an accelerator of existing inequalities: in highly affluent settings, a free press, in particular, provides an informational infrastructure that is disproportionately leveraged by high-SES families, thereby widening the attitudinal gradient between privileged and marginalized youth."
This is a serious challenge for educators working towards a just transition. In light of recent critiques of the neoliberal university in the UK, USA, Australia and elsewhere, it also suggests that this model of university education is actually harmful to just transition efforts.

In Dundee today between the screening yesterday of Fires and Fascism at Campy Growers and this afternoon's at Abertay University.
Was great to see parts of my youth represented! Though I was less keen on finding that the Beano's publisher also publishes "Energy Voice", working with industry and govt to maximise the economic recovery of UK oil and gas.
It's clear that we can't extract new oil and gas and keep a liveable planet for all ... and carbon capture and storage isn't the answer either. A just transition for all is required. People's lives depend on it - fossil fuel workers and people on the climate frontline - and everyone will be on that frontline sooner or later. We need resilience and community.

Na II Śląskim Forum Sprawiedliwej Transformacji rozmawialiśmy o tym, co w zmianie najważniejsze – o ludziach👥
Panel „Zawodowy restart – jak skutecznie wspierać pracowników sektora węglowego” poprowadził prezes Instratu, Michał Hetmański, a dyskusja dotyczyła nowych ścieżek zawodowych dla pracowników kopalń i firm okołogórniczych ⚒️
To szczególny moment dla regionu – jesteśmy w przededniu ważnych decyzji o przyszłości śląskich kopalń i ich wygaszania, a różnice między miastami takimi jak Bytom, Ruda Śląska i Katowice, oraz ich przygotowaniem do transformacji pozostają istotne.
Rozmawialiśmy o tym, jak przygotować pracowników górnictwa na szybkie przejście do innych sektorów, jakie wyzwania stoją przed pracownikami i które narzędzia wsparcia – od przekwalifikowania po mechanizmy osłonowe – działają najlepiej.
To były trudne i szczere rozmowy o przyszłości Śląska.
