Is history linear or cyclic?
Mark Twain said: "History doesn't repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme".
Strictly linear economic progress will be catastrophic for humans, as cumulative, never-ending growth is actually going to be unsustainable.Therefore innovation itself needs to be more cyclic to fit within the constraints of the planet.
It's counterintuitive but biology gives us clues to the way forward

It's apparently World Localization Day, and I've made the wise choice to stay up very late to attend the first session of New Economy Network of Australia's Post-Growth Futures Week on building local futures through transition and regrowth. Amazing discussion on the need to imagine the lives we actually want to live, connect with others, and create a world that allows all to thrive.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the week! (And to watching the recording of this session to catch all the stuff I missed -- central standard time is just a wee bit behind Australian eastern standard time...)

It's apparently World Localization Day, and I've made the wise choice to stay up very late to attend the first session of New Economy Network of Australia's Post-Growth Futures Week on building local futures through transition and regrowth. Amazing discussion on the need to imagine the lives we actually want to live, connect with others, and create a world that allows all to thrive.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the week! (And to watching the recording of this session to catch all the stuff I missed -- central standard time is just a wee bit behind Australian eastern standard time...)

And therefore what we do on the 1,800 days or so when we’re not voting matters waaaaaay more, and shapes what we’ll be able to do when what we’ve been doing goes away

'For decades, the recipe was simple: grow the economy, and poverty would gradually disappear. But the promise that economic growth would “lift all boats” has not been kept. While national incomes expanded, wages stagnated, work became more precarious and public services were cut. At the top, fortunes ballooned; at the bottom, families turned to food banks. Growth has become decoupled from shared prosperity.
It has also become ecologically unsustainable. We are edging towards a “hothouse Earth”, where rising emissions and biodiversity loss are destabilising the conditions that support human life. Around 92% of excess global carbon emissions can be attributed to the global north, and the wealthiest 10% of individuals are responsible for nearly half of global emissions, while people in poverty are the first to face crop failures and rising food prices. An economic model that depends on endless expansion on a finite planet is not just unfair; it is dangerous.'

…What do we suppose happens to semiconductor tech when the *affordability* of the metals it needs plummets long before the metals themselves are exhausted?
Such tech, including PV, cannot be an answer to our predicament.
It could help us down the path of the power consumption ladder but it is wholly insufficient.
Because we have to choose #degrowth for it to help.
But instead we are choosing #postgrowth and mischaracterising that as ‘degrowth’ so we don’t have to look in the mirror
