It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism is true until it isn't. For some practical ideas, I highly recommend this podcast by Micheal Mezz

My class on degrowth/post-growth is doing fabulous things for my morale and general outlook on life and the future.
I haven't figured out my elevator pitch for talking about it yet, but it'll include "Our current economic system is based on infinite growth, which is not compatible with a finite planet," and this from one of the instructors: "It solves the climate crisis, the affordability crisis, and the extreme inequality crisis at the same time."
Here's a 20-minute video intro to some basic concepts:

"Our recent policy analysis of exnovation showed that despite its potential to strengthen policy coherence, exnovation is rarely translated into practical interventions, remains fragmented and unstructured, and lacks just and fair accompanying measures."

…Of course these diagrams are woefully simplistic and inadequate at expressing the complex interplay, including with many factors not mentioned.
But none of them mean I am not *for renewables*. It’s just that the tech is a wholly inadequate lever to pull.
I should make clear that the primary reason for the impossibility of ‘fit’ in the “Renewables-powered future” circles is our *on-going incontinent use of fossil fuels*.
We need #degrowth or we get increasingly unforgiving #postgrowth

Paradoxically, despite existing planetary boundaries, part of the solution to #PostGrowth is to realise that we're in an #OpenWorld rather than a closed-world that can be optimised, as if the economy is a machine.
Machines operate in controlled, closed environments, like factories. Only a steady stream of energy and raw materials comes in.
We live in an uncontrolled environment so this optimisation is false and new information has to constantly enter the model. The model changes.

Being a Prime Minister (or a President) has I think two main functions
1. To stop the ship of state from sinking
2. To help the citizens aboard influence what course they’re onOur dilemma is that for at least half a century successive leaders have set a course that’s sinking and are too compromised to invite a different one
(need to update the UK-centric graphic below soon)

This week's read by @timparrique is excellent reading not so much for the embarrassingly bad article in the @financialtimes that it takes apart but as a fantastic case study deconstructing the whole class of distortions used to maintain capitalist 'green' growth narratives as feasible and sustainable. A great analysis and read. 💚 #degrowth #postgrowth

Is history linear or cyclic?
Mark Twain said: "History doesn't repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme".
Strictly linear economic progress will be catastrophic for humans, as cumulative, never-ending growth is actually going to be unsustainable. Therefore innovation itself needs to be more cyclic to fit within the constraints of the planet.
It's counterintuitive but biology gives us clues to the way forward

Looking forward to learning from my co-panelists at the Wicked Symposium. I will try to be duly wicked. A brief consideration of the intellectual bankruptcy of the neoliberal economic paradigm should do it!

Dear Fediverse, let's do the Old School Internet social network thing. I am heading to #Vienna , there 7 to 12 July. Who do I look up? Interests: #postgrowth , #polyamory , cool people in general. My German is only basic, sadly - not fit for deep conversation. But English, Italian. French, Spanish.
