"When residents finally start to feel fed up with the clutter or during their annual spring cleanings, these devices are sometimes tossed into the trash or blue recycling bins. These forgotten electronics have become a part of a growing citywide e-waste problem.
"Philadelphia creates around 1.5 million tons of residential and commercial waste annually, according to government initiative SmartCityPHL. Electronics and textiles comprise about 10% of the city’s waste stream. The rest is sent to incinerators and landfills, bringing hazardous and resource-rich materials with it.
"But the good news is, there’s something residents can do about it.
"While giving up or not upgrading our devices isn’t always an option, getting them out of our curbside bins and landfills is. The Philadelphia metro region has over a dozen facilities where you can donate and properly recycle your e-waste, keeping them out of landfills and giving them new life.

#FortWayneIndiana (WFFT) — "OmniSource Electronics Recycling LLC is encouraging the community to 'Recycle With Kindness' this holiday season.
"From Dec. 9-13, the waste management company will host a free electronics recycling week for those who trade in essential item donations.
"'We believe in the power of giving back and supporting our local charities,' Jennifer Marbaugh, OmniSource Electronics Recycling marking representative, said. 'This holiday season, we are excited to make electronics recycling free, in exchange for our donors to contribute to those in need in our community.'
"The [donated] items such as non-perishable foods, hygiene products and cleaning supplies will be given to The Redemption House and The Rescue Mission."

Ha ha! It's alive!
Great success, after obtaining the correct ribbon cable my laptop's original LCD panel is accepting HDMI input from the eDP controller board :revblobfoxscience:
Last month I had replaced the screen with a new one, as a unplanned drop test two years ago had bent the display assembly in a way that kept the laptop from detecting when the lid was closed. The panel itself still worked, so it was mostly just a battery-draining and light-leaking annoyance.
I'm loath to throw out functional electronics, so after a bit of searching on ebay I found a compatible controller board for the panel to provide 12 volt power and video input ports for the screen, which it would normally get straight from the laptop's internal 30-pin eDP connection.
I still gotta give the panel a better mounting solution, but I'm just tickled pink that my laptop is going to be able to use its original screen as a secondary display, like some sort of two-headed franken-machine.

Argh, ample gluey rubber tape on 3 out of 4 sides is holding the LCD in the old laptop lid.
Good job Dell for making the Vostro's lid out of stamped aluminum instead of cheapo plastic; that's probably what saved the screen when I dropped it. Boo Dell for making it extremely stuck in there and precarious to remove.
There's a 40 pin male connector that connects the whole assembly to the motherboard, which must include usb for the webcam and lines for the wifi and bluetooth antennas. The LVDS driver boards I'm finding are more frequently 30 pin and always male. There should be a 30 pin female slot in there for just the LCD, but it's sandwiched between the aluminum casing and the fragile panel... :blobfoxthink:
While I could just spend the money on an external monitor, I'm loath to trash this dented but otherwise functional display. Plus the idea of my laptop using it's old display as a secondary monitor amuses me :blobfoxlaugh:
More spudging will have to come tomorrow.
