Printed circuit boards are typically made of glass fiber-reinforced fossil epoxy resin, making them difficult to reuse. A team from TU Freiberg has now presented a fully compostable alternative made from the mycelium of the Aspergillus niger fungus, a byproduct of industrial citric acid production.

Large polluting industries (#biomass, #aviation, #fossils, #Microsoft etc) are lobbying the most to weaken UN rules for permanent carbon removals. These are activities supposed to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, but it is expensive to do it for real so they are lobbying to be able to pretend doing it rather than actually doing it.

'When I first became involved in advocating for eastern #tarakihi in 2019, #Fisheries New Zealand’s own #science estimated the eastern stock had fallen to around 16% of its unfished #biomass—well below the 20% soft limit and nowhere near the #Harvest Strategy Standard target of 40%.
'Six years later, we’re paying substantially more at the checkout, yet the eastern stock remains well under a rebuilding-plan target.
'Recent projections suggest it is still hovering around the lower management thresholds, with recovery far from assured under current catch settings.
'That should concern every New Zealander.
We’ve somehow normalised the idea that a fish can become increasingly expensive while remaining chronically depleted. Consumers are paying more, commercial operators continue #fishing, and we’re repeatedly told the #fishery is being managed “#sustainably”.'If this is what #sustainability looks like, perhaps we need to rethink what the word means.
'A truly #sustainable fishery shouldn’t require decades of rebuilding while the stock remains well below the level our own management system says it should achieve. It shouldn’t leave us debating whether 10–20% of the original spawning biomass is acceptable, and it most certainly shouldn’t have us celebrating modest improvements while remaining nowhere near the target.'

With NGOs from all over the world, we wrote to the political leadership of the EU Commission to urge them to phase out wood burning incentives in EU legislation.
This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to correct the single largest anomaly in EU energy & climate policy that has subsidised for years the overgrowth of #biomass at the detriment of #forests, the #climate, public #health and the energy security of people still relying on wood to heat their homes.

"In the far north, climate change is not some distant warning anymore. It is already reshaping the landscape.
"Across Alaska and Canada, Arctic and boreal regions are warming up to four times faster than the global average.
"That puts a huge amount of pressure on #ecosystems that have long helped slow climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it in #trees, #shrubs, and #soil.
When forests stop helping"The trouble is, those ecosystems do not always stay helpful under stress.
"As wildfires grow more intense, drought becomes more common, and other disturbances spread, parts of the north may start giving #carbon back to the atmosphere instead of locking it away.
"Once that happens, the whole climate system becomes harder to stabilize.

Wildfire dark brown carbon has strong global warming effects
Conventional understanding has held that brown #carbon—a type of organic #aerosol from #biomass burning—mainly absorbs sunlight in the near-ultraviolet range, giving it only a limited #climate impact. However, growing observations show that some #wildfire-derived #BrownCarbon appears dark brown or nearly black, absorbing light well into the visible spectrum. This "dark brown carbon" has been largely missing from global climate assessments.
The results show that wildfire-derived brown carbon has a global direct radiative effect of +0.097 W/m², with an uncertainty range of +0.050 to +0.276 W/m². Notably, the upper bound of this estimate (0.276 W/m²) exceeds the radiative contribution of black carbon (0.163 W/m²).

And an interesting twist - as IIRC, in some areas bamboo became a problem because it was no longer harvested the make various products, because plastics were cheaper. Turn around is fair play, after all.

Visiting #Finland.
Very friendly people. #Helsinki is very nice. But all the #wood behind me is going to be burnt in power plants or district heating. Some of the trunks are amazing: large, straight, no mould, prime condition.But they're birches. Or aspens. And there's a market for them as fuel, because the EU's renewable energy policy pushes Member States to subsidise energy companies burning wood. In Finland, those benefit from a big tax break.
This is a #climate crime scene.
