    'When I first became involved in advocating for eastern #tarakihi in 2019, #Fisheries New Zealand’s own #science estimated the eastern stock had fallen to around 16% of its unfished #biomass—well below the 20% soft limit and nowhere near the #Harvest Strategy Standard target of 40%.

    'Six years later, we’re paying substantially more at the checkout, yet the eastern stock remains well under a rebuilding-plan target.
    'Recent projections suggest it is still hovering around the lower management thresholds, with recovery far from assured under current catch settings.
    'That should concern every New Zealander.
    We’ve somehow normalised the idea that a fish can become increasingly expensive while remaining chronically depleted. Consumers are paying more, commercial operators continue #fishing, and we’re repeatedly told the #fishery is being managed “#sustainably”.

    'If this is what #sustainability looks like, perhaps we need to rethink what the word means.

    'A truly #sustainable fishery shouldn’t require decades of rebuilding while the stock remains well below the level our own management system says it should achieve. It shouldn’t leave us debating whether 10–20% of the original spawning biomass is acceptable, and it most certainly shouldn’t have us celebrating modest improvements while remaining nowhere near the target.'

  3. I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.

    Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.

    But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).

    This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.

    There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.

    Abstract:

    "We have found that aquatic plants can reduce the content of perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) within a short period of time. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in the uptake of PFAS from contaminated water by various #wetland plant species, investigate the effect of #biomass on PFAS removal, and determine whether laccases and peroxidases are involved in the removal and degradation of PFAS. Seventeen emergent and one submerged wetland plant species were screened for PFAS uptake from highly contaminated lake water. The screening showed that #EriophorumAngustifolium, #CarexRostrata, and #ElodeaCanadensis accumulated the highest levels of all PFAS. These species were thereafter used to investigate the effect of biomass on PFAS removal from water and for the enzyme studies. The results showed that the greater the biomass per volume, the greater the PFAS removal effect. The plant-based removal of PFAS from water is mainly due to plant absorption, although degradation also occurs. In the beginning, most of the PFAS accumulated in the roots; over time, more was translocated to the shoots, resulting in a higher concentration in the shoots than in the roots. Most PFAS degradation occurred in the water; the metabolites were thereafter taken up by the plants and were accumulated in the roots and shoots. Both peroxidases and laccases were able to degrade PFAS. We conclude that wetland plants can be used for the purification of PFAS-contaminated water. For effective purification, a high biomass per volume of water is required."
