Cory Doctorow’s 2017 novel Walkaway has a reputation in solarpunk circles as a great example of a solarpunk lifestyle, and a must-read book for everyone from the individual who lives and breathes solarpunk to the solarpunk-curious to general science fiction fans. But what is it about Walkaway that gives it solarpunk cred? Ariel and Christina ponder this, discussing features of the novel that could be considered solarpunk, and some that might be more post-cyberpunk than anything, and how some of the ideologies and technologies are or have been applied in our present world. Is the world of Walkaway an achievable solarpunk paradise, or a nice hopeful story featuring very cool gadgets and bites of lefty philosophy? Or something else entirely? In this episode, Ariel talks with BrightFlame: witch, workshop leader, co-founder of the Center for Sustainable Design at Columbia University, and author of solarpunk witchcraft short stories and now a new novel, called The Working. They discuss what solarpunk witchcraft looks like and how, though witchcraft’s manipulation of energy on the astral plane is extremely important, magic is only one half of the equation: the other is activism - actually getting out there and doing the thing, whether it’s attending a protest, contributing to a potluck to strengthen community bonds, or making something with a specific intent in mind.

- futurist 🔮 - taking place in the future
- utopian 🌈 - taking place in an idealistic society where everything is designed to be harmonious, just, and fulfilling for all people
- solarpunk ☀️ - a sub-genre of utopian literature, solarpunk fiction takes place in a sustainable, eco-friendly future where humanity lives harmoniously with nature, often featuring renewable energy, green cities, and with a focus on social equity
- anti-capitalist 🌹 - the characters and plot tell a story that illustrates the pitfalls of capitalism and shows resistance and possible alternatives"

CW: Microfic: Solarpunk Autumn
The morning air has finally started to get a chill. This is still novel as you hold the hot, steaming travel-mug of tea in your hand. As you amble down the road you take the time to take in the changes in the city.
The trees and foliage that cover every structure around you have lost their vivid greens and are slowly becoming a sea of deep reds and vibrant golds. The wind has picked up in the last few days and there is a wondrous chorus of rustling.
As you make your way to the Farming lot at the heart of your neighborhood you check the schedule on your phone. The Automated system is reporting the pumpkins are ready to be harvested. By the looks of the algorithm results for distribution, there will be enough extra for some to be carved up for Halloween.
The local kids will like that. The ceramic ones people now use are less wasteful but there’s nothing like making a real jack-o-lantern when the opportunity presents itself.
You send a post out onto the local mesh network to see if anyone wants to meet up for hot drinks later, before putting your phone away. Time to get to work taking in the last of the summer’s bounty.
