¿Sabían que existió una versión de Linux tan ligera que podía transformar una computadora arrumbada de los años 1990 en una consola de videojuegos retro sin instalar nada en el disco duro?

Este sistema operativo se llama Puppy Arcade y fue desarrollado por un programador independiente conocido en los foros de software libre como sc0ttman. Su genialidad consistió en agarrar la base de Puppy Linux 4.2, una distribución famosa por su tamaño milimétrico, y modificarla por completo para meterle emuladores de consolas clásicas listos para usar. El resultado fue una joya de la informática que funcionaba con requisitos que hoy en día parecen de broma, pues para arrancar solo necesitaba un viejo procesador Pentium a 166 megahercios y apenas 128 megabytes de memoria RAM, logrando que computadoras que ya se consideraban basura electrónica volvieran a la vida en un segundo.

El gran secreto de Puppy Arcade y lo que lo diferenciaba de otras opciones de emulación pesadas era una herramienta exclusiva llamada Rom-Loader, diseñada por el mismo creador. En lugar de pasar horas configurando códigos, botones o carpetas ocultas, este programa buscaba los archivos de los juegos dentro de cualquier memoria USB o disco y, de forma automática, los enlazaba con el emulador correcto que iba desde sistemas antiguos como la Atari 2600 y el NES de Nintendo, hasta plataformas más complejas de los años 1990 como la Sega Saturn o la primera PlayStation de Sony. Como todo el sistema operativo cabía en menos de 100 megabytes, se cargaba directamente en la memoria RAM del equipo al encenderlo, lo que significaba que los juegos cargaban al instante y no hacía falta modificar ni tocar para nada el disco duro original de la computadora.

Reviviendo computadoras viejas con un perrito digital

Un recorrido sencillo por el sistema operativo que no se rinde ante el paso del tiempo

Mucha gente piensa que cuando una computadora se vuelve lenta o ya no puede con los sistemas operativos comerciales tradicionales, su único destino es el rincón de los trastos olvidados o el contenedor de reciclaje. Sin embargo, en el mundo del software libre existe un proyecto muy noble que nació en junio de 2003 de la mano del desarrollador Barry Kauler y que fue bautizado con el nombre de Puppy Linux, una herramienta pensada específicamente para rescatar del olvido a esos equipos que parecen no dar más.

Lo que hace diferente a este pequeño sistema no es solo su simpático logotipo de un cachorro, sino la ingeniosa forma en la que administra la memoria de la computadora al momento de encenderla. Cuando inicias tu máquina usando una memoria USB o un disco con este sistema, los archivos no se quedan leyendo constantemente desde el almacenamiento físico, sino que se copian por completo directamente en la memoria RAM, que es el espacio de trabajo más rápido que tiene cualquier computadora. Esto provoca que el equipo reaccione con una velocidad sorprendente, abriendo programas y herramientas básicas casi de forma instantánea, incluso en computadoras que apenas cuentan con 256 o 512 megabytes de memoria de trabajo.

A pesar de su tamaño tan reducido, que suele ocupar apenas entre 300 y 400 megabytes de espacio, el sistema viene equipado de fábrica con todo lo necesario para las tareas del día a día, como navegar por internet, procesar textos sencillos, ver videos o escuchar música. Su interfaz visual utiliza entornos amigables que recuerdan mucho a la forma de trabajar de las computadoras clásicas, por lo que cualquier usuario puede adaptarse a sus menús sin necesidad de aprender comandos complejos ni configuraciones extrañas. Con el paso de los años, el proyecto pasó de ser el esfuerzo de una sola persona a convertirse en una gran familia mantenida por una comunidad de usuarios en todo el mundo, la cual se encarga de crear versiones modernas basadas tanto en los cimientos de Ubuntu como de Slackware o Debian para asegurar que los navegadores web sigan funcionando de forma segura con las páginas actuales.

Esta alternativa de comunicación y trabajo demuestra que la vida útil de los aparatos electrónicos no tiene que estar dictada por los requisitos cada vez más exigentes de las grandes empresas tecnológicas. Utilizar una opción tan ligera permite que estudiantes, hogares o pequeñas oficinas continúen aprovechando sus equipos con total soberanía y sin gastar dinero en actualizaciones de piezas, transformando una vieja PC en una estación de trabajo funcional, veloz y lista para los retos cotidianos.

Ooo, I really loved #PuppyLinux way back in the day (20+ years ago)

But nowadays I'm partial to just running #sway, so all of the desktop tweaks of a distro like Puppy would be lost on me.

The only reason I picked #AntiX * is that it's one of the few debian-based non-systemd distros left out there. MX Linux seems to be migrating to systemd. :P

* This is not to say that AntiX is bad or anything, but more along the lines of "[those] desktop tweaks [are] lost on me." It's still a nice distro.

Laptops die écht oud zijn en niet meer geschikt om fatsoenlijk op te internetten hebben één groot voordeel: je kan er niet mee internetten. Dus: typen zonder afleiding, of tekenen zonder afleiding. Geen verleiding om toch even op social media te gluren of het nieuws te lezen.
Ik gebruik dit netbookje nu voor de referentiefoto's, beter dan telefoonscherm en neemt weinig ruimte in op mijn bureau.
Het toetsenbord is net wat te klein om hem als typemachine te gebruiken.

Now and then I like to try portable Linux distributions, which are great if you have access to computers that you don't own, and you want to be able to keep your operating system with you as you move.

Puppy Linux is one of the easier options and it's compatible with Ventoy with a little effort. :puppylinux:

@ai6yr One option for those who don't want to start off by reformatting, is creating a bootable USB version of Puppy Linux.

Goto https://PuppyLinux.com. You grab an iso and burn it with something like Rufus on Windows to a USB, then boot it and you can either keep running it off USB stick or install it anywhere.

Works on any computer where you can tell the BIOS to boot from USB.

I clumsily burried (and maybe fixably corrupted?) a perfectly good (10, no updates for 1-2 years) windows install -- fortunately I was able to fish it up with a #MXlinux live usb I had floating around.

I thought I would end up using #puppylinux to play with it but the boot tools on MX were beyond adiquate AND pretty 🤩

I am an longtime #puppylinux user. I finally installed #Kubuntu 24 after wiping windows off my 10 year old ideapad, though both Kubuntu and puppylinux use a lot of battery -- so I'm looking for a new or used laptop that plays better both with #lubuntu, #kubuntu and #puppylinux. Any suggestions on the best laptop for home and the road?

Finally copied it all, saved to my own laptop and left with hers for her to copy.

I'm sure others would have an easier way to this, but I felt accomplished that I got it done.

Searched and used CTL-F to search for USB mentions in each old Windows98 page I used. Downloaded a few that might have it.

Found one that seemed promising.

Extracted it on my current laptop. Burned it to CD.

So I tried the wifi dongle to connect to wireless. Probably too old to connect to modern wifi. Got an ethernet cord out. No ethernet port to connect.
