I have watched 2 television episodes in the past 2 days where rollable archives have been used to kill people by crushing them.
Having some actual experience with these, that's neat for TV, but not really possible they way they used them.

A library card catalog.
These should never have been gotten rid of, IMHO.
I still believe they were helpful to educate people in discernment and critical thinking skills.
New stuff is sometimes great and useful.
Let's stop getting rid of the old stuff just because something new comes along.
Especially if something new always requires more power.

Both my bicycles need to go into the shop. So checked out this Rushford Bike Share bicycle from the Rushford Public Library.
These aren't available from mid-October to April. Still nice to have it as an option.
Note: Bicycles with coaster brakes don't stop when you pull on the handlebars non-existent brakes.

Aggregation (accession? Not sure if there's difference of meaning.)
Curation.
Cataloging.
Discovery.
Weeding.The World Wide web is *great* for aggregation. Sometimes for discovery (surfing), but really bad at the rest. Also used to be good for searching -- but not currently.

My grandmother and her sisters in the early, early 20th century in SouthEast Alabama would hurriedly stop what they were doing and all quickly gather on the porch to smoke cigarettes *nonchalantly* when the wood "work wagon" with the teenage and college aged boys passed by on the way to their homes from working at the cotton gin.

I bought a CueCat from LibraryThing when they first got them. It was so useful to me when cataloging my book and graphic novels library.
Their holiday store has them on sale for $5 for the holidays.
Now you can use a mobile phone, but back then it wasn't an option.
But you get a neat little plastic cat sculpture with a USB tail and flashing red mouth with a CueCat.
Useful for Bookwyrm.

I have a hard time believing I did this.
I was offered to go down into a basement full of books and take whatever I wanted without paying for them.
Told myself I didn't have space & walked away.
Told my wife and she asked what I did with her husband.
For context, in the past, I had a 2 room apartment with a kitchen and bath. When we moved, my books filled up 4 rooms of our new to us rental house.

Bicycled from Rushford to Houston. Lunch, explored library & shops.
Houston Library had a free Minnesota State Parks pass. Since I'm a member of SELCO through the Rushford Library, I was able to get it. Only good till the 30th, but we'll try to use it.
Bicycled home, enjoyed a wonderful breeze.

Finished the book "A Good Kind of Trouble" by Lisa Moore Ramée.
Good book that should be read by a lot of people, especially younger people. The people who really need to read it to learn some empathy have already tried to ban it, the cowards.

28 miles today to Houston, Minnesota. This a bit harder as it has a steep hill.
Glad I did both. Hot and humid reminded me of North Alabama.
Tomorrow I catch up on reading "Moon Lake" by Joe R. Lansdale.
Then listening to "The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monae.

Oversized first. Over 14 inches vertically.

Special work section for currently reading/using.
Had it by DDC until I got a job as academic staff in an academic library. I prefer LLC, but I think Public Libraries use Dewey so they dont have to pay catalog fees for most of their collection.

One bike is in the shop. Backup bike is currently without a chain. Checked out a bicycle from the Rushford Public Library. Adjusted and tightened loose seat after I got home.
Went for a pleasant jaunt around town.
Pleasant after I adjusted to using coaster brakes. A little terrifying when my hand gripping did nothing, nothing I tell you!
I now ❤️ handgrip brakes so much more.

Couldn't find the hardware detection program so turned it off and on again. Hardware detected, searched for driver on that CD.
Not found.
Huh?
Oh.
Copied to hard drive and ran as executable and searched again.
Winner!
I ❤️ love love The Internet Archive!
Tried to copy and nothing would copy. Then realized I was trying to copy on wrong part of the USB drive.

Searched and used CTL-F to search for USB mentions in each old Windows98 page I used. Downloaded a few that might have it.
Found one that seemed promising.
Extracted it on my current laptop. Burned it to CD.
Copied from CD to Windows98.

So I tried the wifi dongle to connect to wireless. Probably too old to connect to modern wifi. Got an ethernet cord out. No ethernet port to connect.
Turned it off and on again, hoping Puppy Linux would detect it.

So tried to copy to USB in the USB port in the back. No USB Flash drives could be read. And I don't have a floppy drive in my current desktop or laptop.
Then I found older USB Flash drives. I found one that was only 512mb and thought that maybe it could be read.
Couldn't be found in Puppy Linux. Windows98 didn't find it.

Found old 3.5 floppy 💾 disk.. 20 unused, 3 of my wife's used. One of them with old family recipes on it.
Then found an old laptop, a Toshiba Satellite 320cdt I'd forgotten I'd had. Windows98 and a version of Puppy GNU/Linux on it.
Floppy drive worked.
Oh, this should be easy.
Tried to burn a copy of her floppies to a CD. Kept failing. Copied to the hard drive in both OSes.

*spouse just told me this younger generation don't know what those are (How?!!).

A7. The local Public Library has bikes to check out during the Spring and Summer. If I could get maintenance for them, I would love to do the same and have them distributed to as many small town librariess as possible with funding to keep them going.

Still too cold, but I needed to get out. Bicycled around town for a bit, then went to the library. My SouthEast ears are having to adjust to hearing MidWest accents. A [bag] "beck" is a "bahg".
This is a great library for such a small town. Defend your library from narrow minds, and make sure they're funded. Join the board if you can.
