Finished *The Pearl* this morning. Loved it, and was especially smitten with his adventures in leitmotif: music of the pearl, music of the family, music of evil.
Replace the pearl with a ring and it has me thinking about Das Rheingold. Steinbeck used music a lot in *Cannery Row*, too, esp. classical references.
My first reading was ages ago. Definitely didn't remember that.
Apparently you can see the Steinbeck's personal music collection at the link, which is cool. Very eclectic! No Ring cycle in sight though. 😆

En 1939 apareció una novela que provocó algo bastante inusual para un libro: miedo entre algunas de las personas más poderosas de Estados Unidos.
Intentaron retirarlo de bibliotecas.
Lo acusaron de propaganda peligrosa.
En algunos lugares incluso lo quemaron en público.El libro se llamaba Las uvas de la ira y su autor era John Steinbeck.
Steinbeck había nacido en 1902 en Salinas, en pleno valle agrícola de California.
Su familia era relativamente estable: su padre trabajaba para el gobierno del condado y su madre era maestra.
No creció en la miseria ni en los márgenes.Podría haber llevado una vida tranquila y escribir novelas cómodas.
Pero eligió mirar donde casi nadie quería mirar.
Durante los años treinta, Estados Unidos estaba atravesando uno de los momentos más duros de su historia.
La Gran Depresión había arruinado a millones de personas y, al mismo tiempo, una catástrofe ambiental conocida como el Dust Bowl convirtió enormes zonas agrícolas en polvo.Estados como Oklahoma, Texas o Kansas quedaron devastados por tormentas de tierra que arrasaban cultivos enteros.
Miles de familias campesinas perdieron sus tierras.
Sin muchas opciones, cargaron sus pertenencias en coches viejos y emprendieron un largo viaje hacia California.
Habían oído que allí había trabajo en los campos.La realidad era muy distinta.
Las grandes explotaciones agrícolas necesitaban mano de obra barata.
Para mantener los salarios bajos, contrataban a más trabajadores de los que realmente necesitaban.
Así los propios trabajadores competían entre sí por cualquier empleo.Las condiciones eran durísimas.
Familias enteras vivían en campamentos improvisados.
Muchos no tenían agua potable ni atención médica.
Los salarios apenas alcanzaban para comer y los niños enfermaban con frecuencia por desnutrición.Cuando los trabajadores intentaban organizarse para pedir mejores condiciones, muchas veces eran expulsados de los campamentos o intimidados por guardias armados contratados por las empresas agrícolas.
Steinbeck decidió verlo con sus propios ojos.
A mediados de los años treinta empezó a visitar los campamentos de trabajadores migrantes en el Valle Central de California.
No fue solo como periodista.
Pasó tiempo allí, habló con las familias y escuchó historias que casi nadie estaba contando.Lo que vio lo marcó profundamente.
Primero escribió una serie de reportajes titulada The Harvest Gypsies, publicada en el periódico The San Francisco News.
Aquellos artículos denunciaban la situación de los trabajadores migrantes.Pero Steinbeck sentía que eso no era suficiente.
Así nació Las uvas de la ira.
La novela sigue a la familia Joad, campesinos de Oklahoma expulsados de su tierra que viajan hacia California buscando trabajo y terminan atrapados en un sistema que los explota y los trata como si fueran desechables.
El libro no suavizaba nada.
Había hambre, desesperación, injusticia y rabia.
Cuando se publicó en abril de 1939, el impacto fue inmediato.
En pocos meses vendió cientos de miles de ejemplares y se convirtió en uno de los libros más comentados del país.Pero en los condados agrícolas de California la reacción fue furiosa.
Algunas organizaciones agrícolas acusaron a Steinbeck de exagerar o mentir.
Otros lo llamaron comunista.
Decían que el libro atacaba la economía del estado.En ciertos lugares fue retirado de bibliotecas.
En otros, directamente quemado.
Incluso en su ciudad natal, Salinas, hubo personas que organizaron hogueras públicas con ejemplares del libro mientras acusaban a Steinbeck de traicionar a su propia comunidad.
Las amenazas también empezaron a llegar.
Pero ocurrió algo curioso: cuanto más intentaban desacreditar el libro, más gente quería leerlo.
La polémica lo convirtió en un fenómeno nacional.
En 1940, apenas un año después de publicarse, Las uvas de la ira ganó el Premio Pulitzer de Ficción.
Poco después también fue llevada al cine por el director John Ford, con Henry Fonda interpretando a Tom Joad.
La película se estrenó ese mismo año y reforzó todavía más el impacto de la historia.Pero quizá el reconocimiento más importante llegó de otro lugar.
Muchos trabajadores migrantes escribieron cartas a Steinbeck agradeciéndole el libro.
Decían que por primera vez alguien había contado lo que realmente estaban viviendo.Steinbeck siguió escribiendo durante toda su vida sobre personajes que rara vez aparecían en la literatura: trabajadores, marginados y gente común enfrentándose a sistemas injustos.
En 1962 recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura.

Comunque.
Sto (finalmente) leggendo Furore di Steinbeck. È una lettura che esula completamente dalla mia comfort zone (non amo leggere americani in questi anni e i classiconi mi sono sempre stati indigesti).
Eppure vi dirò che è una delle più sontuose letture degli ultimi mesi. Meraviglioso.

Finished this (*East of Eden*) this morning --- this was stellar.
I mean, sure, it's a classic. But I was not planning to end 2025 and bring in 2026 with a 650 page, multi-generational epic that is about good and evil and our personal battles with each, and that is also about our familial/cultural/national inheritances, and also about national identity and difficult histories, and also about the very difficult thing that is family relationships even at their best...
and also, is just one really long exegesis of Cain and Abel (and maybe all of Genesis)...
but I am so glad I did.
I think this and my recent reading of Cannery Row have made me a full-fledged Steinbeck fan.

John Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature on this day in 1962.
If you are teaching with his novel The Grapes of Wrath, bring it into the present by combining it with documentary film Greener Pastures, which explores the lives of four contemporary Midwestern farming families. It's a great insight into how much has changed and how much hasn't.
