“Beyond my failings as a racist, I knew I was not wanted in the South. When people are engaged in something they are not proud of, they do not welcome witnesses. In fact, they come to believe the witness causes the trouble.” - John Steinbeck, “Travels With Charley in search of America,” 1962.

  3. No trimming today as I can't be bothered, met some plotters, had a very interesting conversation about the community plot and who stole the material after that management left.

Yesterday I was told its was the previous group, today was told it was the present group...

At my plot was chuffed and surprised to find tiny yellow flowers on the olive tree! And on the thyme, a bumblebee!! (*)

Been plucking horse tail. Am now reading a book sitting under the blackthorn.

  5. A quotation from Steinbeck

We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the never-ending contest in ourselves of good and evil. And it occurs to me that evil must constantly re-spawn, while good, while virtue, is immortal. Vice has always a new fresh young face, while virtue is venerable as nothing else in the world is.

    John Steinbeck (1902-1968) American writer
East of Eden, ch. 34 (1952)

  7. A little patch of land.
    Bread on the table.
A dear friend you can talk to.
A small house you can call Home.
    Rabbits…

Such a modest dream. And yet so impossibly out of reach.

  10. if you have not read #Steinbeck #TheGrapesOfWrath, you must. Compelling, brutal depiction of the 1930s depression; brought on by the 1920s, the last time we were in a horrible, greedy period of wealth concentration! #TaxTheRich #TaxBillionaires #NoBillionaires #TaxCorporations

  11. “We are lonesome animals. We spend all of our life trying to be less lonesome. One of our ancient methods is to tell a story begging the listener to say—and to feel—‘yes, that is the way it is, or at least that’s the way I feel it. You’re not as alone as you thought.’”

  17. Never knew Steinbeck tackled King Arthur but I immediately grabbed it when I saw it in the Little Free Library I sometimes frequent. His lefty ass might give an interesting take on the mythos that have never really appealed to me but maybe in this form they will.

  21. Every time I pick up a book by John Steinbeck I rediscover the simple beauty of his words. Why is it that I keep forgetting?

Right now I'm reading The Pearl for the first time. It is beautifully written, but I'm pretty worked up about the story so far. If this doesn't turn out right in the end, I'm going to be very upset.

    I found #WinWin on an #AltStreaming channel.

Just watched the start to get a feel for it. It looks promising & I plan to finish watching it.

But haven't been able to find #CanneryRow offered for free viewing anywhere yet but, based on the #Wiki summary of it, I don't think I'll like it, even though I am a fan #Steinbeck's writing & own copies of most of his books.

  23. RE: kolektiva.social/@MikeDunnAuth

I'm a huge John Steinbeck fan! #EastofEden is my favourite of his works. The depth of character, the cycle of life and death and the resilience of human beings is all caught in this allegory. It is Steinbeck's painful stripping away; of his characters, society, environment, leaving the barest of feeling and emotional struggle exposed to the reader. Sometimes shocking, sometimes horrifying, but always with a genuine understanding of why humans are the way they are. #Steinbeck #bookstodon

  25. John Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature on this day in 1962.

If you are teaching with his novel The Grapes of Wrath, bring it into the present by combining it with documentary film Greener Pastures, which explores the lives of four contemporary Midwestern farming families. It's a great insight into how much has changed and how much hasn't.

  27. #TomJoad #Steinbeck #Springsteen

Timely lyrics. Heard this on the radio the other day.

"Now Tom said, "Mom, wherever there's a cop beating a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Mom, I'll be there

Wherever somebody's fighting for a place to stand
Or a decent job or a helping hand
Wherever somebody's struggling to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, and you'll see me."

Well, the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kidding nobody about where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad."

  29. John Steinbeck "Podróże z Charleyem. W poszukiwaniu Ameryki".

“Podróże…” stały się więc zbiorem dość luźnych notatek na temat przeżytych na trasie sytuacji, spotkanych ludzi czy poczynionych obserwacji. Pisarz podaje je tak, jak widzi, nie bojąc się zajmować wobec nich stanowiska, ale też zostawiając czytelnikowi miejsce na własne wnioski.

    Gee, he was good.

“Her house became the refuge of young men puling in puberty, mourning over lost virtue, and aching to lose some more.”
John Steinbeck; East of Eden; Viking; 1952.
